Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Friday Night Pre-Debate Liveblog!

Good evening, folks, it’s your great friend Ragekage here, liveblogging tonight’s debate! Tonight, the great state of Mississippi will finally get black and white television! We’ll see what happens when a frail old white man encounters an African-American looking for change! And could I get any more snarky?

Of course, we already know that John McCain won the debate. In fact, he won it this morning- or so the advertisements from his suspended campaign would have you believe. And Rick Davis- can that guy be any bigger of a douchebag?

Grab yer favorite poison, and join us below the fold for developing events! I will be watching the CSPAN feed, meaning there’ll be no talky-head commentary to “interpret” what went on.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is John McCain’s night to shine; he’s spent his entire life pushing his foreign policy credentials. If there was a time to show up Senator Obama, it’s right here, right now. Let’s see how it goes.

Today’s ZOMG TEH POLLS Snapshot- Plus Bonus “Can We Win Without Florida or Ohio?” Discussion?

The Moose is Loose, here we go again! From our national trackers:

Rasmussen

Obama 48, McCain 48

Gallup

Obama 48, McCain 44

Daily Kos/Research 2000

Obama 49, McCain 43

Diageo/Hotline

Obama 47, McCain 42

Some small movement; as you can see, McCain moved up one to tie Obama in the Rasmussen tracker, and Obama gained some ground in the Diageo tracker. All said, we can see the same trend, with the R2K and Rasmussen trackers flanking each end- Obama’s slightly ahead, nationally.

Jewish voters receiving phone calls informing them that Obama is a Muslim

Somebody remind me why I ever supported Senator McCain and the Republican party. From Ben Smith, over at Politico, turns out Jewish voters have been receiving push poll phone calls informing them that Obama is the Muslim Manchurian candidate that will kill them all.

Jewish voters are complaining of a poll that, after confirming their religion, asks a series of questions that appear aimed at alarming Jewish voters, including linking Barack Obama to Palestinian terrorist groups.

Luckily, The New Republic’s Jonathan Cohn got a phone call and took notes:

The leader of Hamas, Ahmed Yousef, expressed support for Obama and his hope for Obama’s victory…

Jimmy Carter’s anti-Israel national security advisor is one of Barack Obama’s foreign policy advisors…

Barack Obama called for holding a summit of Muslim nations exlcuding Israel if elected president…

Now we see just what our buddy Karl has inspired the McCain campaign to do., officially or not. To make it all the more tragic, this is exactly the strategy used against McCain in 2000 to help defeat him in the Republican Presidential Primary.

As always, guys, the best defense to this is a good offense. Let’s get the word out, around the blogosphere and to the mainstream media.

Not News: McCain misrepresents Obama’s stance in new ad; Stupid: They voted together on said stance

Yep, you heard me right- another gem from the McCain campaign.

John McCain’s campaign is running a Spanish language ad in battleground states that blames Barack Obama and Senate Democrats for the failure of attempts to overhaul the nation’s immigration laws – even though the Republican nominee and his Democratic counterpart cast identical votes in the key Senate showdowns on that issue last year

Wonderful. This ad is running in Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico; obviously, McCain’s decided these three are probably the most important states on the map in this cycle as far as return of investment, and since he’s playing poorly with hispanics right now…

On a completely different note, does anyone else notice that all the neo-cons have been ignoring the fact they were yelling and scremaing about McCain’s immigration stance before he got the nod?

Ending the Goode Life- An Interview with Tom Periello

Tom Periello, the Democrat running for Congress in VA-05- a district that runs from the North Carolina border almost all the way to the DC exburbs (or, for those of us from Virginia, from UVA to Martinsville Speedway), was gracious enough to take some time out of his busy schedule recently to sit down with the editors of The Motley Moose. For those of you who aren’t familiar with our wonderful district, it’s probably more nationally recognized as the home of this man:

Recognize him? See if this rings a bell:

The Muslim Representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don’t wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran.

How about his desire to repeal the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, or his opposition to supporting mental health billing reform, and his unmitigated support for Big Tobacco? Hey, at least we know he’s got our back taking down online gambling– probably one of the most important issues currently facing this nation, right?

For those of us here in VA-05, Tom Periello is a godsend. Devilstower, over at the Daily Kos, had an excellent diary on this subject. Tom donates ten percent his volunteers’ time right back into the community; he’s a proud progressive and a member of the Red to Blue program. He’s hopefully going to be one of many new Democratic additions to the House of Representatives this election cycle.

We are also the second of only two political websites Tom has agreed to sit down and have a talk with, the other being Richmond-based Raising Kaine. Given the uphill battle Tom’s facing in VA-05, that’s truly an honor.

Tom, in his own words:
