Open Thread: Am I Looking At The Right Camera?

Well, as expected, Bachmann and her Tea Party rebuttal provided my heartiest laughs of the evening (even more than sricki bombing ‘boarders’). Having now watched the talking heads off and on all day, it seems as though Obama struck the right tone last night. Those on the Right and on the far Left seem to find the most to gripe about…I am quite content with that. Was it low key? Yeah. Was it not as stirring as he is capable? Yeah. Was it successful? Again, Yeah. So, while the hairs on the back of my neck stayed flat, I am well pleased with what he said and with the response, thus far, to it.

What say ye, Moose?

Semi-Open Thread: SOTU or STFU

Tonight we hear President Obama speak officially for the second time on the State of the Union. This is an Open Thread for commentary on Obama’s speech, the Republican rebuttal (Ryan), and the Tea Party rebuttal (Bachmann).

I’m mostly kidding about the STFU in regards to other topics…mostly. 😉

Open Thread: Something Shiny

If you knew you were damaging your brain….would it help if you were having a blast while doing so? (Let’s ask some crackheads for their opinion!) (Yes! Yes, it does help!) Is it possible that our time spent online is actually weakening our abilities to concentrate and solve complex problems? Or is that not the case after all? Maybe we’re actually strengthening our minds in this fast-paced, virtual world. Perhaps it’s a bit of both. It’s a puzzle scientists have been trying to solve for years, and researchers are sharply divided…but I find the idea that we are altering our brains on a cellular level with our high tech, fast-paced lifestyles to be mad cool (and, if being honest….a bit creepy). I want to touch on a couple of the more recent studies on the topic…and perhaps test the limits of Moose distractibility while at it. /grin

[Warning: If you are epileptic or have any other kind of seizure disorder, you need not view this diary.

No, really….not kidding.

People with dial-up should also be wary, as it is image heavy.

All others…make sure you’ve allowed flash…buckle your seatbelts…and join me below the fold!]

Open Thread: History Made….Again

So tonight (technically “last night” now?) was the long-awaited health care vote, and as I’m sure you all know, it must be a monumental event indeed to bring Kysen not only into the open, but into writing a diary… however disjointed and meandering it may be.  ðŸ˜‰  The past few days have been the stuff anxiety attacks are made of for those of us who have invested our time, money, hopes, and passions in health care reform. The uncertainties seemed endless… would we have the votes, would something go wrong at the last minute? But much to the relief of all those holding their breath…

It passed.

This will be an open thread (surprised?). Follow me below the fold for more.

**edit: Yeah, Kysen is outed as a non-football fan, tonight is not Super Bowl..it is the 2010 AFC-NFC Pro Bowl. Super Bowl is NEXT Sunday…and Kysen is stuck with the Grammys (and chili, and nachos, and chips’n’dip, and beer…hmmm..perhaps the Grammys can be fun as well. Or not.)…and I bet the commercials suck during the Grammys.  ðŸ˜‰

Open Thread: SCOTUS SCREWSUS

Though long expected, the decision to overturn Austin v. Michigan Chamber of Commerce and to thereby allow unlimited corporate financing of campaigns is nonetheless shocking. Republicans, with the exception of McCain, are cheering this decision (can near see them rubbing their hands greedily together as they fantasize gleefully over the money soon to be pouring into their campaign coffers). Exxon and Phillip Morris can now give eleventy billion dollars to see that likes of Michelle Bachmann stay in office till they turn to dust.

I want to scream.

I think that author of this letter to the editor would make a good Moose.

   Dear Pat Robertson,

I know that you know that all press is good press, so I appreciate the shout-out. And you make God look like a big mean bully who kicks people when they are down, so I’m all over that action. But when you say that Haiti has made a pact with me, it is totally humiliating. I may be evil incarnate, but I’m no welcher. The way you put it, making a deal with me leaves folks desperate and impoverished. Sure, in the afterlife, but when I strike bargains with people, they first get something here on earth — glamour, beauty, talent, wealth, fame, glory, a golden fiddle. Those Haitians have nothing, and I mean nothing. And that was before the earthquake. Haven’t you seen “Crossroads”? Or “Damn Yankees”? If I had a thing going with Haiti, there’d be lots of banks, skyscrapers, SUVs, exclusive night clubs, Botox — that kind of thing. An 80 percent poverty rate is so not my style. Nothing against it — I’m just saying: Not how I roll. You’re doing great work, Pat, and I don’t want to clip your wings — just, come on, you’re making me look bad. And not the good kind of bad. Keep blaming God. That’s working. But leave me out of it, please. Or we may need to renegotiate your own contract.

   Best, Satan
