Saturday Evening Open Thread

It’s Saturday Evening, Hurricane Ike is raining on Texas and damage is being assessed across the state and the Gulf.

Folks are suggesting we should put more oil rigs in Hurricane-prone waters.  Maybe that is some part of a mid-term energy solution, maybe it’s barking mad.

What’s on your fertile minds?

Franken has big mo, surges in polls now within margin of error in SUSA poll

So the republican bounce in MN never materialized.  Why can I say that with such conviction, because SUSA, who has had really odd polling of MN lately has shown Franken down only 1 (41-40).  When you combine that with the Presidental polling during the RNC that showed Obama up 13% then it would seem that MN is going to add another 4 years to its streak

A Diary Rescue and Update on The View interview with the McCain’s

tarheel74 posted an excellent diary yesterday about The View interviewing Mr and Mrs McCain. My Mother asked me if I had seen the episode, and then told me it was the toughest interview she has ever seen with the McCain’s. This prompted me to watch the full interview and read tarheel74’s diary. The only problem I had was s/he did not include the full interview. I think everyone in American should see this.

John McCain Has No Honor

crossposted at MyDD:

John McCain has no honor.

As a former Naval Officer, and fellow alumni of the Naval Academy, it’s almost hard to believe that I wrote those words above.

Here is the Honor Concept from the USNA website:

“Midshipmen are persons of integrity: They stand for that which is right.

They tell the truth and ensure that the full truth is known. They do not lie.

They embrace fairness in all actions. They ensure that work submitted as their own is their own, and that assistance received from any source is authorized and properly documented. They do not cheat.

They respect the property of others and ensure that others are able to benefit from the use of their own property. They do not steal.”

John McCain would get be expelled from the Naval Academy for his recent behavior.

But, Hey!

He learned this shit fifty years ago, right?

Maybe he just forgot.

The rewriting of history

This caught my eye while I was searching for McCain's original statement on the qualifications he would be looking for in a vice-presidential pick.

This is the text on Google's result page when I searched for "john mccain qualifications for vice president".  Note the part that I've emphasized with bold italic lettering. This text would be from Google’s cache of the page.

Lexington | The case for John McCain | Economist.com Mr McCain's qualifications extend beyond character. Take experience. … Provided Mr McCain chooses a sound vice-president, his many positive qualities … www.economist.com/world/unitedstates/displaystory.cfm?story_id=10251179

Now look at how the article reads since the Palin announcement. It has been edited to remove the reference to a “sound vice-president”.

Take experience. His range of interests as a senator has been remarkable, extending from immigration to business regulation.

Does anyone doubt where the Economist stands in this election? Very shady actions by a supposedly respected MSM operation. I don’t know whether this article appeared in the print version. It is datelined Dec 6th 2007. Please leave a comment with a quote of this paragraph from the print version if you happen across it.

Not News: McCain misrepresents Obama’s stance in new ad; Stupid: They voted together on said stance

Yep, you heard me right- another gem from the McCain campaign.

John McCain’s campaign is running a Spanish language ad in battleground states that blames Barack Obama and Senate Democrats for the failure of attempts to overhaul the nation’s immigration laws – even though the Republican nominee and his Democratic counterpart cast identical votes in the key Senate showdowns on that issue last year

Wonderful. This ad is running in Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico; obviously, McCain’s decided these three are probably the most important states on the map in this cycle as far as return of investment, and since he’s playing poorly with hispanics right now…

On a completely different note, does anyone else notice that all the neo-cons have been ignoring the fact they were yelling and scremaing about McCain’s immigration stance before he got the nod?
