Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Musings from a Texas girl

For the last year or so, I’ve been seeing this Delta flight attendant who lives across the street from me. We never advanced our relationship to a full one, in part because her time in New York was limited. She moved to Atlanta today to be based out of there.

Rachel is from Lumberton, Texas, a small town north of Beaumont where Romney won over 80% of the vote in the last election. Even Rick Perry took 75% here in 2010.

On her last day in New York, we watched Fox News for a bit and laughed at the ridiculousness. She commented.

“It’s funny, but this is exactly how everyone at home thinks.”

Obama Just Cannot Win

When the gun control bill failed, my first reaction was “How will the left blame this on Obama?”

Despite speeches, a lobbying effort, and a tough response, Only 55 Senators supported the bill (Reid switched his vote so he could bring it up again).

The recent fights have lead a number of pundits, from Ezra Klein to Joan Walsh, to admit the bully pulpit sometimes does not work. (See: Jedi Mind Meld).

Then comes Maureen Dowd, in a column that I saw thanks to a tweet from a Democratic candidate for NYS Senate who agrees with her assertion. The gun control bill failed because of Obama, and only Obama.

He doesn’t know how to ‘govern” or “lead” and he needs to be more like Michael Douglas in The American President…seriously.

Unfortunately a number of people are tweeting her column, saying how it’s insightful and how they agree.

The Era of the Idiot- Open Thread

My mother, my aunt and my sister had an interesting conversation where they decided Obama should step down as President, or we should vote Republican, so that Republicans will just stop being assholes and let the government function again.

My aunt asked me what I thought of it and I got two words out before she and my mom went on a tirade about how Obama sounds too smart, and people who talk well often can’t get anything done and we need someone who talks like a normal person to be President. Also, too, Hillary.

The final verdict. “If this is what Republicans want, give it to them. We need the government to function again”

Priorities- Open Thread

From a Long Island friend’s Facebook status this morning.

Wow. We can waste over a trillion dollars on a stimulus bill and another trillion on healthcare, but can’t find the money for Thunderbirds or Blue Angels at the Jones Beach Air Show this year? Fail.

Just as long as we all know what’s most important and everything

Consider this an Open Thread, Sending my thoughts to Alabama, who probably should fend for themselves so we can still keep the F-16s flying around off the coast on Memorial Day to satisfy our lust for flying bomb machines.

Gasoholics: A Demandingly Driven Open Thread

Thought we needed a new open thread, figured I’d kick it off with this Facebook status from a friend:

Dear Pres. Obama, what part of $5.00 a gallon gas sucks ass do you not understand? And no, I’m not trading in my F-150 for a hybrid.

My answer is simple..so shut up and deal with it. His:

Gas is $5.00 because you liberals won’t let anyone drill for more oil. More oil = more gas, but you liberals are more concerned about stupid dolphins and getting me out of my truck than hardworking Americans.

Ah America, where we want our problems solved, without having to sacrifice anything.

Casting Doubt: Birthers In The News

My family isn’t the sharpest set of tools in the shed. They’re often one suit short of a full deck of cards. So it didn’t surprise me when my grandmother came to me yesterday very upset saying she wanted to know why no one told her Obama wasn’t born in the United States when she voted for him last year.

“If I had to know he was unqualified, I wouldn’t have voted,” she said.

I told her it was a lie, and why did she think it was true?

“Well Donald Trump says it’s true and it’s all over the news,” she said.

All over the news.

You're All Invited To Debbie's Party

President Obama made a surprising choice to replace Tim Kaine as head of the Democratic National Committee, the governing body of the Democratic Party…Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.

Wasserman Schultz was born in Queens and raised on Long Island (WOOT!) and represents Fort Lauderdale and its southwestern suburbs in Congress.

She rose into the Democratic leadership in recent years becoming Vice Chair of the DNC and a strong ally of President Obama in Congress.

Meanwhile in Madison- UPDATED

They’re going for it

A source confirmed to WISC-TV that Republican senators intend to remove fiscal portions of the budget bill in order to pass it without Democratic senators.

All 14 Senate Democrats left the state to prevent quorum on the bill. It takes at least 20 senators to take up any budget bill.

New Zealand Earthquake- OPEN THREAD

What a busy week for news. If not the Wisconsin uprising, or the apparent civil war in Libya, now a powerful earthquake rocks Christchurch, New Zealand.

Believe it or not, my idiot sister and her fiancee are in Christchurch. It being summer down there and all, they decided to be unconventional and do their honeymoon BEFORE their June wedding…their honeymoon being a seven day cruise to Antarctica from Christchurch, which ended yesterday They are due to come home on Thursday.

She shot a text to me. They’re fine. They’re heading to Sydney ASAP.

what’s making news by you this busy February?
