One Who Would Marry the Prince

You probably wonder what the title has to do with a diary about science. It is part of a sentence in an interesting story in the March 5 NY Times about a discovery 50 years in the making. It was the story of the Higgs Boson. This was a story about some of the major players and events. I found it especially interesting because of my own involvement in a small way many years ago.

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) was 10 miles from the high school where I taught. In 1983, Fermilab offered for the first time three summer science teacher institutes in chemistry, biology, and physics. I was teaching physics. I was fortunate to be one of the 20 teachers selected for the physics group.

WEEKLY RUMINATIONS

Another week already gone!  Many of us got snow, at least one of us got a job, all of us are working hard.  The sequester silliness continues with no end in sight and there was an actual talking filibuster!  I am no Paul fan and it was only a way to get some facetime on TV but I appreciate the effort of actually doing a real live filibuster and I agree with him on this particular issue.  Maybe the only thing I agree with him on but it is important to look for common ground.

Hill Country Ride for AIDS – a community of kindness

Hello, it’s me again with another diary about the Hill Country Ride for AIDS. Here’s a picture of me & my friend David the year I was top fundraiser: top fundraiser, top fundraiser

I haven’t done as many of these as I’d like, February wasn’t the best month for me. But this is important so I wanted to squeeze this in. If you want to cut to the chase, here’s my Hill Country Ride for AIDS page, but I hope you’ll come with into the extended diary for a good story. And of course music.

The Daily F Bomb, Friday 3/8/13

Happy Friday, Bombadeiros!  How’s it hangin’?

My knees have already mostly recovered from my fall. I have a policy – if nothing pops or creaks, keep it moving. I kept moving after tripping, and my knees never got swollen and never stiffened up. I do workers’ comp for a living, and it seems to me the ones who suffer the longest are the ones who instantly go sedentary when they get injured. My wrist has improved range of motion, but I still need the brace I picked up yesterday (I had one at home, but the color was soooooo butt-ugly that I had to find an alternative).

Interrogatories

Let’s talk about ever-changing standards of beauty. Picking from any period in history, you just have to have seen pictures of the person or persons in question, who is the most beautiful woman you can think of, in your opinion? You don’t have to narrow it down to one if you can’t. How about the most beautiful/handsome man? What is your favorite number? Do you need a dark room to fall asleep in, or does it not matter? Are you an easy sleeper or do you suffer from insomnia? Do you prefer nights or mornings?

JanF and I are going to give you news clues.

This is your open news thread through Sunday night.

I get stories from my twitter feed, or I look at various web editions of newspapers (in English) around the world.

Oh hai!

I have overuse and tension in both shoulders and across upperback.  After a knock-down drag-out tension headache over the weekend, I have iced, stretched, and started some very specific exercises with weights.

Thursday Coffee Hour: The Guardian Series Part Two

Welcome to Thursday Coffee Hour. This is an open topic thread so help yourself to the goodies and sit a spell and let us know what is new in your life. I have a couple of leads on where to promote my art so I’ve been updating all my old art on my website with new models and textures. I want everything to look as good as possible. I did a series in 2006 called the Guardian series where I tied everything together with the same dragon and rainbows. I wanted to challenge myself to see if I could do a series that was artistic and symbolic and united together. It wasn’t easy to do but the more I got into it the more I enjoyed creating it. The dragon was really a pretty clunky model and could not be posed. So I just finished updating the whole series. These are the Guardians of Time. See my previous diary for the Guardians of the Seasons. Future diaries will have the Guardians of Elements, and Concepts. I’ve included my comments on the pictures from my website.

The Daily F Bomb, Thursday 3/7/13

Thalutationths, Bombstherth! It’th Thursday.

I fell down and went boom yesterday, effed up my right knee, but most of all my left hand. I have to let my right hand hit the shift key for the left one, because too much range of motion hurts. Too bad I didn’t do it at work, I could handle my own workers’ comp claim!

Oh well, let me poke my nose into your business. Don’t hold back!

Interrogatories

Those of you who cook: What is your very best dish? Can we have the recipe? 😉 What fashion from your youth would you like to see come back in style?  What fashion from your youth would send you running from the room screaming if it came back in style? What is your favorite day of the week?

I am un’Fiercing’ after a mistaken ‘Fierce’

Diaries

When creating a new diary, remember to choose the

Draft option while you are working on it.

Choose the Public option when you want to publish.

If you are an established Moose, you know the drill

so pull up a chair, get yourself comfy and a cuppa

whatever it that gets the motor running.

The Rulz

The most important rule around here is;

Be Kind to Each Other… or else.

 photo thCANIVMZI.jpg

Seriously though, if you don’t want it said to you, then don’t say it to someone else. Respect is an important thing. If you feel the need to not be respectful, then step away and take a breather. Political debate can be both spirited and respectful.
