The Follies of Ourselves

Open a newspaper, turn on the computer and the brutal economic news comes at you like an asteroid storm.  Now no doubt some of it is true.  But am I the only who feels the fear-mongering coming on a bit too strong?

Instilling fear has so far been working with company after company laying off workers, even when its absolutely not necessary. Hey why not lay people off when we can get the others to work twice as hard?  Yet we read and hear more and more of these stories, and shake our heads in disgust…

Perhaps what pisses me off the most though is that we continue to let it happen.  Case in point is everyone’s favourite CEO Richard Fuld of Lehman Brothers who now can proudly claim to be the poster boy for the global economic meltdown.

A Brief History of Shoes and Defiance

So, some Iraqi journalist took off his shoes today and threw them at President Bush. According to a witty Bush (ha, ha) they were “a size 10.” Awesome. That doesn’t even come close to the hilarity that was watching the supposed leader of the free world ducking for dear life from a shoe onslaught. It was horrific and hilarious at the same time…does that make me a horrible person?

That prompted me to wonder–how far have we come since the days of the woman who lived in a shoe with too many children (or however the fairy tale goes); or Wynken, Blinken, and Nod who mysteriously sailed off in a wooden shoe; or since Cinderella’s glass slipper (speaking of which, how the hell do you walk in shoes made of glass? Ouch?)? The following is a brief chronological tale of the role of shoes in political or social defiance.

Lame DUCK and Cover! YouTubes and Toons *Updated*

I could watch this all day long! Oh and slow mo totally rocks.

He does have good reflexes. I am told the shoes were a size 10. Heh. That would have left a mark.

After Ani watched it, she remarked that she was humiliated by the fact our (so called) president had not one, but two shoes hurled at him, while in another country. This man is not just the worst (so called) president, he a monumental joke.

I am certain that we will need to start registering our shoes with the government.

Why do Republicans hate America?

You doubtless remember George Bush’s testimonial that he and his administration never stop thinking about ways they, like the terrorists, could hurt America:

NPR Cutting Black Journalist Farai Chideya

The Baltimore Sun had this news brief today:

Public radio cancels 2 programs, cuts 64 jobs

National Public Radio announced yesterday that it is canceling two programs and eliminating 64 jobs, blaming a “sharp” decline in corporate underwriting and other revenue…Many of the staff cuts were realized by canceling two shows, Day to Day and News & Notes. Both are scheduled to go off the air March 20.

YouTube Censorship?

I just met YouTube a few months ago and since then, I have started a love affair with this medium. While much of it is crap and parts are kinda scary, I have seen some of the coolest, most imaginative and responsive venues possible. As far as I am concerned, YouTube rocks.

So when a bit of a controversy broke out this past week, I was uncertain as to what was even happening, and before I could even investigate, it ended. So please, follow this strange little tubing tale and if you are so inclined, tell me what you think about these events in another part of the Internetsphere, in a place outside of Left Blogistan.

I won’t be commenting this time, as I hope the tubes will tell the story on their own. So please follow me down the rabbit hole, enjoy and I hope, think about this…

Did You Tube Try to Commit Censorship This Week?

Joe-boy, “Oy”jevich and Other Musings and Rantings of a Madwoman [Updated]

Lately I have been watching Morning Joe. Joe-boy is a blowhard and is usually difficult to take, but I get a certain sort of enjoyment out of the show each day. I do however, find myself wanting to reach through the screen and strangle Mr Scarborough on a regular basis. It is annoying and sickly hysterical to watch the boys and Mika B. Now there is a dynamic worth a diary or two.

Joe was crying (again) about the positve treatment President-e Obama has been receiving, whilst his ‘lil shrub has been so pilloried by the media. Joe-boy was trying to assert that if Karl Rove had said one thing six months ago and then another about any connection to a Governor after he had been arrested, the media would be screaming “liar” from the mountain tops. Mika scored huge points with me today by pointing out that the shrub maintained a frightening stranglehold on the media for years (my characterization of her words), playing Nero while Rome burned (my characterization again). Oh and he has lied countless times to the American public, thereby losing credibility all on his own (sorry Joe-boy).
