Traitorous Bastard Parade: Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK)

Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) “isn’t sure which side (President Obama) is on” with his “un-American” speech in Cairo.

Listen, jackass, this is our overwhelmingly-elected President you are talking about being “un-American”.  This is our Commander in Chief who you are openly wondering “which side he is on”.  Protecting your precious political career is no excuse for personal and moral cowardice, when you accuse the President of treason you should put your damn money where you fat mouth is.

A Tale of Two Speeches

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness; it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity; it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness; it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair; we had everything before us, we had nothing before us; we were all going directly to Heaven, we were all going the other way.

Other than that, President Obama and Dick Cheney were in complete agreement in their speeches yesterday on torture and Guantanamo Bay.

Overnight open thread – Obama Empowers Torturers? UPDATED

Maybe it’s just me. Maybe it’s debilitating trickle down of the credit crunch, or just the sudden retraction of Spring here in the UK, but tonight I’m depressed. Or maybe it’s just this…

“I want to emphasize that these photos that were requested in this case are not particularly sensational, especially when compared to the images we remember from Abu Ghraib,” the president said on the South Lawn of the White House. “But they do represent conduct that didn’t conform with the Army manual.”

Obama Breaks Campaign Pledge

The Cato Institute notes that President Obama seems to be slipping in one of the key promises he made on the campaign trail- full disclosure of the Federal government’s actions in regards to legislation, so we never have a fiasco like the 1,100-page PATRIOT Act being passed in a manner of hours.

On the campaign trail, President Obama promised to post bills online for five days before signing them.

Last week, President Obama signed three new bills into law. None of them received the promised “Sunlight Before Signing” treatment – at least, not as far as our research reveals. (The White House has yet to establish a uniform place on its Web site where the public can look for bills that the President has received from Congress.)

President Obama, what's wrong with our money?

I proudly voted for President Obama, but I must admit, there are times I question whether or not this was appropriate. A case in point comes this morning, as I was perusing the news wire, and came across this report from New York Magazine:

New presidents are allotted $100,000 to overhaul the White House residence and the Oval Office… But the First Couple isn’t spending that money. They “are not using public funds or accepting donations of goods for redecorating their private quarters,” says Camille Johnston, director of communications for the First Lady. Nor is the couple, who reported $4.2 million in household income in 2007 tax returns, using money from the White House Historical Association, a privately funded foundation that paid for a $74,000 set of china shortly before Laura Bush left town.

Mr. President, this is exactly where people start thinking you’re a hoity-toity, liberal elitist! What’s wrong with our money, Mr. President? By God, if Joe Biden says it’s patriotic to pay taxes, then you’re essentially questioning our patriotism! I mean, what’s wrong with Cowboys and Indians wallpaper in the Lincoln bedroom? And why would you discount public funds, sir- are you planning on putting in Kenyan cultural art pieces? Perhaps a large portrait of Che Guevara? Something you wouldn’t want the general populace to know?

Mr. President, please come to your senses.

Thank you.

The Latest GOP Talking Point – Obama's Market

Or, it’s all Obama’s fault.

The revisionists are already busy.

“WIRE: ‘Obama Bear Market’ Punishes Investors as Dow Tumbles 20%…” blares Drudge.

Obama’s Radicalism Is Killing the Dow“, says a headline in the Wall Street Journal.

“This Is Obama’s Market, Good and Bad”, writes John Tamny of Real Clear Markets. His article finishes with the statement that, “Whatever direction he takes, it should be clear that today’s stock market is the Obama stock market, so it’s up to him to decide its basic direction.” This article was published on November 25, 2008.

These claims all have one thing in common. They hope to shift the blame for all bad economic news onto Obama so they can claim the market shows his policies are wrong. In order to achieve their goal, they cherry pick the data points and twist recent history to fit their argument.

Iran Wants to Talk

Breaking News this morning out of Iran: they want to talk to the US.

President Obama has plans for Iran.  During his press conference last night the President said:

In the coming months, we will be looking for openings that can be created where we can start sitting across the table face to face.

Well, now the Iranian government is willing.  We will see if they have anything to offer to the world and to their own people.

Lounge: Save the World and Recycle Some Old Flames

Hot on the heels of two excellent Flashbackgate diaries by Sricki on the Primary Wars, I thought that, in the spirit of sustainability, I would ask you to try to recall the best putdowns, comebacks and flames of those tumultuous times.

Why in the spirit of sustainability? Given the anger and insults that seem to dominate most of the liberal blogosphere in the last two weeks, a lot of these can and have been recycled. Especially the Kool Aid quips. So join in. Recycle some old flames. Come up with something better. All manner of logical fallacies and advanced banter over the flip…

America Needs the World: the World Needs America

That was the essence of Joe Biden’s important Foreign Policy speech at the Security Conference in Munich Today.

“I come to Europe on behalf of a new administration determined to set a new tone in Washington, and in America’s relations around the world… We will engage. We will listen. We will consult. America needs the world, just as I believe the world needs America

Has Michael Phelps Led Us to a Partial Economic Solution?

As I sit watching the Senate (and, unfortunately right now, Holy Joe Lieberman) debate the amendments to the Stimulus Bill on C-Span 2, I spend most of the “quorum calls” toodleing around the net looking at recent events and searching for job openings in any of the fields that I’m capable of (I lose my adjunct teaching position in June and I’ve got to find something, at least part-time, to take its place.) One of the things that stands out in recent events is the issue raised by Michael Phelps photographed smoking pot with a bong.
