Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Heat Wave- OPEN THEAD

I remember all those teabagging morons who claimed that because we were having record breaking snowfall six weeks ago, climate change isn’t real and is just a liberal fantasy.

I also remember climate change defenders shooting back by saying “watch, in like a month or two, it’ll be 90 degrees”

The temperature outside my Queens office is 92, five and a half weeks after 21 inches of snow fell on the same spot. There’s actually still a mountain of snow in the parking lot of the Brooklyn shopping center I go to often.

Open Thread, is it hot by you?

PS- Jobs Part II- The Ridiculous Right is coming very soon.

Jobs I- The Negative Nellies of the Left

The first in a three-part series on jobs and politics I’m working on

It was a year ago today, Friday April 3, 2009, that I walked into my office at ABC in Manhattan with my thermos of coffee. I had scored a victory for that day, earlier in the week my boss agreed to let me leave early because my cousin was in town and we hadn’t seen each other in about a year. In hindsight, I should have realized why I got that agreement so easily.

It was raining and it was chilly and the weather fit the mood when I walked through the door. Co-workers hugging, some crying, some just standing there with blank faces. I thought one of two things; Charlie Gibson died suddenly or it’s round three of layoffs everyone had been worried about for weeks.

I was right, and since Gibson’s still alive, you know what was I right about.

Tea Party Democrats

Yep they exist.

And our “liberal media” is making them out to be a huge deal…all 4% of them. That is…4% of the tea party supporters, not 4% of Democrats. So 4% of like 30% at best, so we’re talking about less than 1% of total population here…keep that mind.

Arianna Loses Her Shit Again-

Sometimes I think the some of the left would be better off is they STFU.

The latest news of a deal being brokered between Chris Dodd and Tennessee Senator Bob Corker on financial reform caused Arianna Huffington this evening to go into a “hair on fire” tirade that resulted in a diary on the Huffington Post with a title whose length is reminscent of Fiona Apple’s second album.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…

Arianna says that the President and the Democrats are “preemptively” surrending on an indepedent consumer financial agency…but to preemptively surrender means they never proposed it to begin with. Arianna contridicts;

Heath Care Summit- OPEN THREAD

Anyone see it? part of it? Had to urge to throw a brick through the television listening to the pundits declare it a Republican victory after only an hour? Did you scream when CNN cut off Steny Hoyer’s speech to run an anti-HCR commercial?

I missed the Barasso exchange because I was stuck on the Long Island Expressway in a snowstorm coming home from work.

Speak up.

WTF moment with Americans

A new CNN poll says Americans overwhelmingly agree that Republicans are not doing enough to forge consensus with President Obama.

So certainly they think President Obama should be commended for his efforts to reach out to these people considering they overwhelmingly think Republicans aren’t being conciliatory enough? Right?

Austin Plane Crash- OPEN THREAD

Boy, my right wing acquantiances are certainly unhinged today, finding every possible way to blame Obama for today’s plane crash in Austin.

FBI IS LYING……..”NO RELATION TO AN ACT OF CRIMINAL OR TERRORIST INTENT”……bullllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllshittttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt CANT WAIT TO SEE WHAT THEY SAY WHEN IT COMES OUT THIS PLANE CRASH WAS INTENTIONAL ….I SWEAR THE GOVERNMENT TAKES US AS A BUNCH OF MORONS…AND WE ARE ALL LED BY OBAMA

Somebody needs a lithium.

Evan Bayh Screws America

In a surprise announcement, Indiana Senator Evan Bayh has decided not to run for reelection, opening the seat for a teabagger like Mike Pence and giving more strength to the “Democrats implode” meme.

He made the decisions only DAYS before the deadline to file, while expected to file, and didn’t even tell Harry Reid or President Obama until AFTER his announcement

Journalist on Journalists- Creating a Media Narrative

As you all know, I’m a pretty experienced journalist…a former TV producer (I was the man who told what questions the host should ask), and now a newspaper editor (I’m the dude who assigns stories). Lately a lot of us have been talking about to what extend the messaging has hurt the Democratic party and the progressive agenda, and we wonder if perhaps the administration or the party hasn’t used “it’s bully pulpit” enough to change the media narrative.

But as someone who works in the media, I tell you that person who decides the media narrative isn’t the voters, and it isn’t the President, it’s people like me who decide what the public hears, when they hear and what they don’t.

I’ll use this morning’s interview of Vice President Biden by David Gregory to show how even when the bully pulpit is used, the message doesn’t exactly get out there.

I have HAD it with the media…and reactionary liberals

Bloomberg came out with an article today that took remarks in an interview with President Obama so far out of context, they’re in China.

The article, titled Obama Doesn’t ‘Begrudge’ Bonuses for Blankfein, Dimon, has this quote in it.

“I know both those guys; they are very savvy businessmen,” Obama said in the interview yesterday in the Oval Office with Bloomberg BusinessWeek, which will appear on newsstands Friday. “I, like most of the American people, don’t begrudge people success or wealth. That is part of the free- market system.”
