Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Saturday All Day Herd Check-in – July 5, 2014

The morning herd check-in has been a daily open thread posted to give the moose a place to visit with each other and to build community.

This series has been running non-stop since January 5, 2013 and I am grateful for the opportunity it gave me to meet new people, reconnect with old friends, and chatter about odd bits of news. I hope others feel the same way.

— Daily check-ins are on hiatus as of July 5, 2014 —

Alas, all good things must come to an end and the official check-in will now go on semi-permanent hiatus after this post. My hope is that our community is strong enough to carry on with regular posts from the meese on news, politics, science, history, personal stories, and culture. The president’s weekly address (which will still be posted with regularity) might be a place to insert greetings or some of you may be moved to post a personal diary occasionally (or even daily!) to give us a chance to catch up on each others lives.

And because I believe in tradition, once more with the boilerplate:

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

82 and the skies are blue! No rain in the forecast. Hope you all had a good holiday. Because of the weather, I had the traditional picnic inside. It worked out and everyone had a good time.

Hope everyone has a great day! Now for coffee and the news.

perfect Catskills weather for a cookout.

Have friends coming up from NYC and we are headed over to the home of some other friends – all of us are a bunch of old-time activists so it is a social-political event

We’re having a few perfect days during which we need not turn on the air conditioning at all. We had a good time at Elder Son’s barbecue yesterday. The company he just joined has issued him with a MacBook Air for work, and he showed it to me. It’s unbelievably light.

Hoping for a good writing day today–oh, well, there’s lots of laundry to do too–but I want to work on “House of Blue.” My desktop publisher and I are having all kinds of trouble with my latest book on Smashwords–now they say there’s something wrong with the epub file. I’m clueless as to how to fix that and DTP is nervous about it herself. Bummer!

It’s great to hear that everyone’s Fourth went so well. Hubby is downstairs watching Formula I qualifying, after which he’ll pick up Monty Beagle from doggy day care. I know without a doubt that the people in this neighborhood will continue setting off fireworks for the next week, which will drive me to shut windows that would otherwise be open to the night air.

Later today I’ll go out and pick tiny tomatoes for tonight’s salad. Yesterday I picked the first–and so far only–runner bean.

    Happy Saturday, all!

Eating breakfast, watching Up and the Tour. Today: take recycling out, go grocery shopping and to the effing gym.

And with yesterday’s rain and the fireworks ban Bellingham is unusually quiet, with a no pops and booms to scare the birds and the dogs. Just a coal/oil train blowing it’s whistle as it lumbers through the park…..scaring me!

Connie, the lovely woman who helps me with this house, is on vacation so I hobbled around yesterday getting the beds changed the laundry done, and the bathrooms cleaned. Ron vacuumed, did the grocery shopping, and bbqued our supper…a very quiet 4th!

Jan, enjoy every minute of your new found morning time and many many thanks for the days of check in pleasure. I’ll send up some form of a moose alert when my broken toe finally heals!

    Take care everyone.
