Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Saturday All Day Check-in for the Herd

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Fierces on the Weather Critter Comment are obligatory welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

On weekends (and holidays), you may find the check-in thread earlier or later than normal because … it is the weekend! Moosies need their beauty rest:

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

  1. Wake Forest will livestream it starting at 9:55am Eastern

    Maya Angelou Memorial Service

Speakers will include Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey.

I did not know this about the connection between Ms. Angelou and the Obamas:

Although Angelou supported Hillary Clinton in her 2008 run for presidency, she would come to fully embrace Barack Obama’s campaign. She wrote in an essay for Essence magazine that it was Oprah’s counsel that brought her around, and touted Michelle Obama’s “effortless grace.”

President Barack Obama praised Angelou as a “brilliant writer, a fierce friend and a truly phenomenal woman” and noted that his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, was named for Angelou.

  2. We were chatting about it, fittingly, in the post entitled “the bright sunshine of human rights” starting here. This weekend is the Wisconsin Democratic Party Convention and people at the event were giddy, to say the least. Marriages were performed in Madison on the steps of the City County Building and in Milwaukee. The Milwaukee County exec said county offices will be open 9am to 2pm and he would pay the overtime out of his own pocket (he’s a rich guy). I hope to have time to put together a post on the convention and the ruling. This is the summer kickoff for Mary Burke’s campaign and we believe she has a very good chance to become our next governor. 🙂

Eating breakfast, watching Up. Even on MSNBC, there is vigorous debate about Bergdahl. Jonathan Capehart is pointing out all the the hypocracy. I wonder how the administration can be surprised that the same people who used John Kerry’s VietNam service against him are now pissed that they made the very deal they said they wanted for Bergdahl.

I need to leave at 9 to go to the opening of the new part of the trail. That’s an hour & a half from now & I’m already thinking of reasons not to. Hmmm.

Anyway, for now, trying to get some breakfast eaten.

Grandpa has taken Pink Cheeks home, but I will pick her up tomorrow after tea. Hoping to get some writing done today!

The splash party was very successful. Both kids had a great time yesterday. Looking at the weather forecast for the coming week, it appears we can’t schedule another one until Friday. There’s a threat of thunderstorms every day.

Our local noon news broadcast always ends with an overhead view of the White House, gleaming and impressive amid its surrounding green lawns. I said to Miss Pink Cheeks, “Look, that’s the White House! Who lives there?”

The five-year-old looked at me, opened her little rosebud mouth, and said, “Obama.”

I almost keeled over. I wish she had said “President Obama,” that’s something we’ll have to work on, but at least she knows who lives there! I’m telling you, this kid is smart.

Great news about marriage equality in Wisconsin and the hope of a new governor! Oh, how wonderful it would be to see the last of Walker! The rat.

Looking forward to some porch time after tea today, it’s so lovely and the humidity is so low. Tomorrow it will rise. We hate to turn on the a.c. unless it’s absolutely necessary, and it looks as if it will be necessary next week.

    Have a good day, everyone!

I’m easing into the day, very glad this challenging week is nearly over. To many hours spent tending to BCH leg and a messy desk have made me a certified grouch!

And then there’s the boat….it was sold until one engine lost power 🙁  Needless to say the skipper isn’t very happy about taking his tool bag down the dock again today. It may be a simple fix and the deal may still happen, but the pleasure of boating rule is in play today.
