Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Tuesday Morning Herd Check-in

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Fierces on the Weather Critter Comment are obligatory welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, … or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

  1. I generally start my weekday morning scanning the headlines and saving off, in browser tabs, the stories that I want to read later. Sometimes I get to them, other times I store them off in Readability to Read Later, other times I close them because I have found stories to read that cover the topic better. Or I run out of time!

One of the pages I scan is the aggregater RealClearPolitics. Those opinion pieces from all over the country are also from all across the political spectrum (although I think it tilts right). The headlines are very often funny (unintentionally, I am sure: Benhaziiiii IRSSSSSS), occasionally infuriating, and sometimes a glimpse into the right-wing soul. One headline this morning was the latter: “Can Dems Keep Pandering to the Minority Vote? – Joel Kotkin, OC Register”. To Republicans, championing the causes of minorities is “pandering” because to them it would be pandering, an attempt to get their votes by pretending to care about them. To Democrats, civils rights and women’s reproductive rights and the rights of workers and LGBT rights are not poll-tested talking points … they are the core of our party and embedded as Democratic Party principles.

Today is the 60th anniversary of  Lyndon Johnson’s speech on the Great Society … a set of programs intended to lift Americans out of poverty, first by ending discrimination, second by putting a safety net under our elderly in the form of Medicare and third, by launching programs intended to improve the economic well-being of our citizens. Some programs were resounding successes and some were unable to be implemented or were dismantled by Reagan and his demon spawn. But the paths could not have been more clearly illuminated. We could be a Great Society or we could be the puny country that the Reagan, and now Ryan, Republicans want for us, one with Bush’s have-mores hoarding the wealth and despoiling our natural resources; a path leading us to a country where the middle class is destroyed and our children are left with an earth that is uninhabitable.

It is not pandering, it is who we are.

    50s here,heading for the 70s.

Listening to Mahler, as I type, before heading our tor the newspaper, coffee and the day’s events and deadlines. Went to a sublime concert of Mahler’s Third conducted by Haitink over the weekend. Haitink is now 85, with a serious cardiax history, and to see him conducting this masterpiece, which is about 100 minutes long, with such artistry and vigor made me realize, once again, the importance of passion.

Hope it’s a good day, with a dose of passion, for all.

Sleepy, sleepy, sleepy. Must eat so I can have tea, but stomach says no. But it’ll say no to the tea even louder.

Earworm – last song on in the car – U2’s Rise Up. I need something bouncier, to wake me up.

Still having problems with my PV generation-recording software.  Instead of not recording everything for 24 hours as it’s done once a week since installation, last night it recorded 38.0 MWh which is ridiculous – I was at 262.4 KWh lifetime generation Sunday night.  The most important thing, of course, is that it is actually generating power (and as far as I can tell, considerably more than I use on non-A/C days) – but I want to know how much power so I can calculate how much I’m using.  I’ve kept track of my monthly usage for over 14 years now and I’m getting a little P.O.’d that my wonderful PV system is not letting me continue to do so.

Meanwhile, hope to wrap up summer payroll today among other little fiddly things I haven’t been able to finalize for the last month.  Hope things are going well for everyone in Moosylvania.  {{{HUGS}}} bf

Yesterday was a good gardening day! We all worked well together and got so much done. Jeanne is both knowledgeable and fearless with the clippers and Ethan is strong and ready with the shovel so rocks got moved into place, overgrown plants are transplanted, new plants were planted, and we have a plan for the next session. They left with a full truck load of pruning cuts and I took more to the flower shop. The garden doesn’t look anything is missing though…..big relief!

I’ll have to take it easy today, but it feels good to know I can just focus on the flower pots now and that the rest of the garden will be cared for.

Just lost the long, rambling comment I was typing because of accidentally hitting something or other! Oh, well.

Planting basil and cilantro today in the herb garden–also transplanting the lantana, which has lost its flowers and is now sitting in its pot lookin’ ugly.

What do you think of the Chinese hacking story? For years I was careful to turn my desktop completely off every night (it’s the “master” in our home network, wired directly to the hub or router or whatever that little box is), until some guy came to the house to do something to the computer. He said I didn’t need to worry about hackers in Pakistan Internet cafes hacking my home computer in the middle of the night, so I started leaving it on again.

Not sure what to do now. Apparently they hack the computers of ordinary people as well as those of U.S. Steel. Should we all be worried? Thing is, it’s a tremendous bore to turn the thing on and of. I leave it on all the time and sit down at it at intervals during the day, when I need to work or catch up on the news.

    Have a good day, meese!
