Interrogatories

At this writing, I am listening to people on TV talking about various kinds of addiction, which leads to these serious questions.

Have you known many drug addicts? Have you lost friends or loved ones to drugs?

How about alcohol?

Smoking?

I’ve lost loved ones to all three, I’ll bet most of you have as well.

    so you get serious questions.

I’ve known quite a number of heroin addicts. One of them I did not know was an addict until he OD’d. He had seemed so engaged with life, had hobbies, a fiancee, etc. I learned that is not that unusual. Of course, I have known the nodding-out-in-public variety as well, which seemed to me to be more common. The guy who OD’d didn’t fit the profile, the rest did. Anyway, D. wasn’t the only one who died, there were more. Luckily, most of my heroin addict friends recovered. They had to get out of that life – a new group of friends, new hangouts. Most of them have families of their own now, I think that is the glue that holds them together. One has because a well-known drug counselor. Oh, my brother was one of those who didn’t make it, though he abused every drug he could get his hands on.

My father was an alcoholic, and his death was related to it, though not specifically caused by it. Had he been able to quit, he would have lived a lot longer. Others I know who were killed by alcohol drove drunk (or were killed by drunk drivers) or died in fires caused by drunken carelessness, or similar situations.

My dad had quit smoking after a family friend died of lung cancer. My mom kept smoking for another 25 years. She did get lung cancer, quite a while after she’d quit, but I have no doubt that contributed. She’s the only one I know who may have been killed by smoking. My other friend with lung cancer never smoked a day in his life.

    Cheery, huh?

Funny, my pothead friends have been potheads their entire lives, have steady jobs and happy families, and have never felt the need to move on to harder drugs. I really think alcohol is more of a “gateway drug” than pot.

I found a few Tweets last night. This one on the young man from Mizzou who came out as gay before the NFL Draft:

I just hope that the team who employs Richie Incognito does not draft him. The kid deserves a chance to show what he can do on the field. I suspect that a country who lauds a rich fan in Texas calling a basketball player the n-word has a lot of evolving to do.

Here is a great Tweet from West Virginia:

    Back after breakfast!!

Well, I can hope, eh?  Tiny bit of snow yesterday.

Have you known many drug addicts? Have you lost friends or loved ones to drugs?

    How about alcohol?

    Smoking?

I haven’t known many drug addicts well.  Just glancing blows.  People in college may have been on their way there, but I don’t know.

I have known people who died fairly young from various forms of sustained hard living (drugs + alcohol).  No dramatic overdoses, just the body giving out in their forties.

My mother’s brother and his wife were very heavy smokers, and they could have lived a lot longer.  He died at 65, of cancer of the esophagus, I think.  My father and mother, king and queen of clean living, both made 91.

Good morning….finding a song, thinking about your questions of the day, reading the tweets and hovers…a great start to the day. Thanks Floja!

drugs and alchol……sadly yes. My youngest brother died of a drug over dose 5 yrs ago, and my surviving brother is dying now of liver cancer, with Hepatitis C being part of the cause.

My kids were fortunate to survive their “youthful indiscretions”. And my husband and his brothers are all meeting the challenge of enjoying alcohol while aging.

A serious question, no easy answers, just daily diligence.
