Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Thursday Morning Herd Check-in

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary

Fierces on the Weather Critter Comment are obligatory welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, … or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

wind chill -3 in Saugerties  NY.

Tra la la la – today is my first day of classes where I get to meet all those bright shining young faces packed into my classroom.  All 70 of them (30 in one class – 40 in another)

No if I can just be sure my teeth don’t fall out while talking I’ll be happy 😉

  2. And how every election matters: from city council to county supervisor to state senate and assembly to attorney general to governor.

Virginia to fight same-sex marriage ban

Virginia Attorney General Mark R. Herring will announce Thursday that he believes the state’s ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional and that Virginia will join two same-sex couples in asking a federal court to strike it down, according to an official close to the attorney general with knowledge about the decision.

The action will mark a stunning reversal in the state’s legal position on same-sex marriage and is a result of November elections in which Democrats swept the state’s top offices. Herring’s predecessor, Republican Ken Cuccinelli II, adamantly opposes gay marriage and had vowed to defend Virginia’s constitutional amendment banning such unions, which was passed in 2006 with the support of 57 percent of voters.

2006 was the year that same-sex marriage bans swept the nation as Karl Rove attempted to tilt the math in favor of Republicans in the midterm. Unfortunately for him, the need to put up a firewall between the Worst President Evah and the damage he was bent on doing to the country resulted in a wave election for Democrats. The marriage bans won, unfortunately, but what is happening in Virginia shows what can happen when people don’t give up and work their butts off to turn their state blue again. Next up, Wisconsin? :::fingers and toes crossed and dialing fingers ready to phonebank:::

Today I will post my slightly delayed next installment of “Election Matters” where I discuss the 2010 midterm and try to figure out what did (and didn’t) happen that year.

    See all y’alls later!!

twenty and falling back to six. Hope today is a good day for all.

Is it today that RonK is coming home?

Saw that Murray and Warren are defying Menendez and Kirk’s bill.  Schumer and Gillibrand have yet to answer any of my polite emails. Am now thinking that William Seward was our best senator. Of course, he wasn’t a Democrat. Sigh. Maybe I’ll give the laurel back to Aaron Burr although….

It’s in the 50s now, that’ll be our high for the day. 30s by the time we leave work. Sadly, probably no snow. We can hope, though — at least enough of a threat for delayed start to work. (if there is any frozen precipitation at all, things here close down — no one wants us driving on frozen stuff). I forgot to water the plants yesterday, so I’ll water them a little today then cover them. Oh – and it’ll be 70 by Sunday.

The kick off party for the AIDS Ride is tonight — I hope they don’t have to call it off. I think it’s just gonna be cold, so they shouldn’t have to.

Next Wednesday – clear liquid diet. Cranberry & apple juice count as clear, I’m betting kale/celery/parsley juice doesn’t. Hmmmm. I wonder if I should even come in to work — dunno how my head will be, sounds like a light-headed kind of diet.

I hate leaving the tap running all night, but the cost of the water is a lot cheaper than repairing busted pipes.

This old house needs more insulation. The floors are heart pine, built in 1921, and were never insulated. I am going to put fiberglass batting insulation between the joists. I am torn about the windows. They are the original Anderson type double hung windows, and most of them have the original glass panes. The windows and doors are slightly odd size, because they were hand made here on the property. Years ago, somebody sold the previous owner some cheap storm windows, but most of those are falling apart and don’t do much good. I have been shopping for storm windows and they are really expensive, even when they are cheap looking aluminum. Two different carpenters of my acquaintance have told me I should replace all the windows with double pane, wood-look vinyl-framed windows. In truth, they are not much more expensive than cheap looking aluminum storm windows. It is just that I hate to replace the antique windows.

To top it all off, the sash weight ropes have died of old age in all but a couple of the windows.

Other than that, things are fine. Have had my Cajun coffee and am about to head out to the office.

Tracking down monies expensed to the wrong Cost Center today – there are unfortunately many of them as the standing P.O. at the Bookstore is used by all the faculty.  They at least do give me the receipts so I can do journal entry corrections once they post on the departmental Cost Center and move the expense where it actually belongs.  Hope everybody has a good day and manages to stay warm.  {{{HUGS}}} bf
