Friday Coffee Hour: Check In and Hangout for the Herd

Friday Coffee Hour and check-in is an open thread and general social hour. Come back when time allows through the day – the conversation continues.

It’s traditional but not obligatory to give us a weather check where you are and let us know what’s new, interesting, challenging or even routine in your life lately. Nothing is particularly obligatory here except:

Always remember the Moose Golden (Purple?) Rule:

Be kind to each other… or else.

What could be simpler than that, right?

the coffee would be surprised!  it’s been YEARS.

for a few years after my mom died, i would get a mocha (the only coffee i could stand) on her birthday.  she was the coffee drinker.  ex drank it black.  me, i’m a tea gal.

i think it’s 40ish and i think highs are in the mid 50s today.  i need a visit to ace hardware i think, for ideas on the windows (for winter).

heading back to school today after a six day break.

Last Friday – my students suspended the assigned discussion to ask me to explain the shutdown, and default crisis.

It was interesting to see that they really had no understanding of what was going on- though they did know it was the fault of the Republicans.

I wound up pointing out that they had to take responsibility for their ability to vote – and learn who candidates are in their districts and what they stand for.  Sigh.

Hopefully, we will continue that conversation today.

Good morning, meese!  Jan, that coffee graphic is so funny I almost fell off my chair!  Hope Iriti will start feeling better. This weather is something we don’t want to miss.

Yesterday, as part of my volunteer work for the campaign, I went to an assisted living facility to pick up three people and drive them to Early Voting at the government center in Reston, Virginia, just down the road from here. My car was full of Girl Power! The three ladies charmed me with their determination. “We MUST vote,” they said. “This election is important.” We had such a good time talking and laughing as I drove them there and back that I e-mailed the campaign manager when I returned and told him I’d do it again next week.

Our candidate is doing very well against the entrenched incumbent, who has voted with his party (the Transvaginal Probe party) 97 percent of the time.

We had a sudden, fierce rainstorm last night.  I couldn’t believe my ears!  It was late at night, right at bedtime. This morning it’s fair and clear.  I’d love to be able to see “The Fifth Estate” today–the film about Julian Assange, starring Benedict Cumberbatch in that role.

Other than that, we’ll be getting ready for a luncheon guest on Sunday. Haven’t found any ladyfingers in the store to make a trifle, so I’ll have to think of a different pudding.

Hope everyone will have a good day! BTW, daughter-in-law went back to work yesterday. She’s still queasy a good bit of the time and feels overwhelmed and disgusted by smells. The smell of someone’s shampoo yesterday on the Metro almost did her in, she said at dinner.

I guess long sleeves & real shoes will become normal from here on out. And we’re supposed to get some rain overnight tonight. Sunday morning is even supposed to be legitimately cold – in the 40s, but by the time Walk stuff starts, it’ll be ok.

Going out to dinner with old college friends after work. Still gotta be in bed early because of ungodly hour workout.

Earworm – Tired Pony (the singer from Snow Patrol, Peter Buck of REM & some others I don’t know) – this isn’t a real video, just one of those “lyrics” things, but I really like this band:

Sorry you’re sick, Iriti. Zapping gently with focused healing vibes.

maybe rain, maybe.  So glad I now have firewood – the woodstove heats the space I spend my waking hours in so much better than the furnace, and doesn’t overheat my sleeping space in so doing.  QC wasn’t bad last night, largely because the anti-gummint group blocked an addition to the agenda that would have had us arguing for at least an hour.  I got home before 7:30!  {{{iriti}}} – feel better soon.  Hope everyone has a lovely day and weekend.  {{{HUGS}}} bf

The Windows 8.1 upgrade has made my computer happy, but it now prefers IE as the browser and that doesn’t make me happy…..funny how a browser change just makes everything seem different.

I spent to much time fussing with computers yesterday so after the pool this morning I hope to spend some time in the garden. I’ve got plants to tuck under the hedge for the winter, spent flowers to remove from the container plantings, and some winter pansies to plant so everything doesn’t look all bare.

If the gummint is back in session Here Near DC, why is the shopping center absolutely mobbed with people today? Did they take the rest of the week off?
