Thursday Morning Herd Check-in: Greetings of the Moosekin

Make sure you let your peeps know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the Weather Critter Comment are still welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

The Recommended list, defined:

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture.

– The Rec list algorithm, per Kysen:

The Rec List is based upon number of recs and number of days on the list.

The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

Don’t use the Recommendation button as a ‘I read this and I like it’ indicator….you can say that in the comments and by rating the comments contained within the diary.

– Per me:

… any post that reflects our values and gets us to think about who we are and our place in the world is valuable to progressives.

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

Let the greetings begin!

asleep in Mooseland. Hope the dreams are great as will be the day.  Here, it’s summer. Sigh.

    Slow morning here I see.

Cool and cloudy here. Not sure the exact stats. Supposed to be in the high 70’s or low 80’s the rest of the week, which for summer around here is blissful.

overcast, sure wish it would rain at this point because endless humidity that’s off the charts doesn’t cut it in the garden!

and tomorrow.  Don’t have a whole lot of motivation to work…..  It’s kinda sad to feel this way.

well I was completely blindsided by test results yesterday. Everything I had worried about turned out to be not the problem, instead it is something I hadn’t even considered. The good news is that there is a treatment available and our local pharmacy should have it today, it remains to be seen how unpleasant it will be. Funny thing is that researchers seem to really like medicines adminstered in nasal sprays but people hate using them, something researchers can’t quite wrap their minds around. It seems to be one of the most effective methods but what is missed is that most of them burn fiercely for about 30 seconds and that can be quite a steep hill to climb. I’ve encountered this before so I know I can do it because after all 30 seconds isn’t much, the only problem is knowing that it needs to be done every day.

but it’s July, so that’s to be expected

I’m sooooo sleepy. Slept poorly, woke all the way up twice….of course the 2nd time was 4-ish. I brought my gym bag today because my group’s workout is at the Capitol. But honestly I’m not sure I can stay upright all day. Oooh, I just checked & we only have 5 applications for 3 of us to process. Guilt at leaving early assuaged. But my workout group……I really miss those guys & a workout would probably help my sleep, but not even starting till 6:30….

Anyone who is also an insomniac, or who knows herbs & stuff: I take valerian & melatonin, then closer to bedtime, ambien. Anything else I can do to stay asleep?

Wearing orange again. Still shit going down in the Capitol. The full Senate vote may be Friday or Monday. There’s supposed to be a rally Monday. I so look forward to some regular days at some point in the future. But that woman who was dragged off by the DPS was on Lawrence’s show last night & she was brilliant.

    Anyway – hi.

They were right, and I was wrong.  We barely hit 90°F for a high, and since it is now blessedly cool at 59°, I’ll trust their prediction of 84°F for today.  Frankly, I’d prefer it never get past 80, but I’ll take it after sweating for days.

Our new secretary/receptionist’s first day went remarkably well.  She’s a quick study, got an enormous amount of work done, and the clients seem to like her as much as I do.  Things are definitely going well at the Center.  We have some problems to overcome, but with a good team in place now, none of them seem insurmountable.

So heavy it might count as drizzle. Today’s high: 59°F out here, downtown 67°F.

Haircut or laundry today, haven’t decided which.

I’m wearing my Cranky Pants this morning.  Due in to the MU hospital at 9:30 for a one hour abdominal (vascular) ultrasound.  No food, no water, NO coffee! I’m not complaining about the tests as I’ve been really impressed by the level of care I’ve received in the Univ. of Missouri health system.  They are now addressing issues which were left untouched by my Colorado physician for 12 years.  We don’t think there is anything wrong but want to cover all possibilities.  This is a good thing.  Will treat myself to lunch at Steak & Shake (also really liked by trs).  No Steak & Shakes where I lived in Texas & Colorado so having a burger there takes me back to my teens.

I need to do a simple “bless and release” cleansing and the ritual I “know” (as in was given by a friend I can’t reach right now) uses salt, sage, and sweetgrass.  I’ve got the first two but haven’t a clue about the sweetgrass except it doesn’t grow around here.  Anybody know of a viable substitute I might be able to locate in NW AR?

We had unkept promises of rain last night and this morning (thunder, lightening, rain smell) but no rain.  So still hot and muggy.  {{{HUGS}}} to the mooses.

predicted for the afternoon.  It rained during the night too.  Yesterday I went out to pick more runner beans, which we had for dinner last night. I don’t know why this has been such a terrible year for raspberries–we’ve had hardly any.  Last year we had a pretty good crop, but then this has been an extremely rainy summer. Does anyone here know about raspberries?

Anyway, errands this morning and packing this afternoon. We’re about to travel to one of my favorite cities on this earth–Austin! As anotherdemocrat says, it’s hot as hell there but we’ll be in air conditioning at the hotel, visiting with family who’ll be arriving Saturday from Bay City, Corpus Christi, and elsewhere.

Hoping to see my 19-year-old politically active granddaughter too, if she can tear herself away from the State Capitol!  She’s working for Annie’s List this summer as well as at Democratic Party HQ. She’ll have to go back to college next month.  Haven’t seen her in years, although I’ve seen her mom, my daughter, and my son-in-law and grandson. Wish we didn’t live so far apart–1,500 miles is a long way.

Heavy rain over the Waldo Canyon burn scar yesterday afternoon caused a terrible mess on our highway, but there were no serious injuries and it’s back open now.

    Y’all have a good day!

Had a rough night last night, stupid RA. Fever, chills, pain… took a couple of hours under 3 blankets and a heating pad to get the chills gone. Then I was too hot and had to sit up for another hour or two til my temp normalized. This stuff is weird, yo. Today, I feel sorta like I spent the night in the dryer with a bagful of hammers, but it’s better than last night.

And we’re waiting for my mom to get her celiac test results. I have enough possible symptoms (no intestinal, thank goodness) that I probably should be tested. That goes double if she comes up positive.

Need I say that I love bread?

Didn’t get up until almost 9:00 this morning. That never happens; I’m always up about 7:00 or 8:00 at the latest.

Did errands, found the inexpensive avocados and cheddar cheese at Aldi, bread and coffee cake at Trader Joe’s, and four boxes at Giant Food to use for the kitties’ litterboxes. I looked for a USB to PS2 converter at Best Buy but they didn’t have it. I started to buy printer ink at Staples but there was a long line so I left.

Does anybody have a USB-PS2 cable kicking around?

I finally have a dr.’s appointment next week. The person in her office sounds very nice and she spoke warmly of Dr. Ahjan. She has a subspecialty in gerontology, so that will help.

The medical group has scanned in Dr. Winchell’s handwritten notes from the past 11 years or so and I’ll get a copy on CD or by email. It’s hard to believe that all those notes for all of Dr. W’s dozens (hundreds?) of patients were scanned in, but I suppose they have an autofeed and a dedicated person or two to do the work.

Anyway, that’s one more thing checked off my list.
