Thursday Morning Herd Check-in: Greetings of the Moosekin

Make sure you let your peeps know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the Weather Critter Comment are still welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

The Recommended list, defined:

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture.

– The Rec list algorithm, per Kysen:

The Rec List is based upon number of recs and number of days on the list.

The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

Don’t use the Recommendation button as a ‘I read this and I like it’ indicator….you can say that in the comments and by rating the comments contained within the diary.

– Per me:

… any post that reflects our values and gets us to think about who we are and our place in the world is valuable to progressives.

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

You can follow the daily moosetrails here: Motley Moose Recent Comments.

Let the greetings begin!

This is how I celebrate the 4th each year 🙂

Technically – years after his death historians revised his birthday to August 4th, but I ignore that since Louis believed he was born on the 4th of July and celebrated accordingly.

Got the music blasting and am headed outside soon to hose down the porch (chicken shit) and get ready to bar-be-que.

    My music to clean by:

77 and thunderstorms here in Hudson Valley, going up to 90.

At least my back porch is covered.

Going for a high of “all the eights, garden gates” today.

For the block party tonight I’m going to make a very pretty Vegetarian Pasta Salad with tricolored rotini and multicolored baby bell peppers, broccoli florets, chopped capers, and Italian dressing.  Can’t decide whether to make chocolate chip cookies or brownies with walnuts. Definitely will make Lavender Lemonade.

Today I’m going to celebrating the Fourth with my family and try to forget the state of the country and the world.

    Happy Fourth, everyone!

eastern Iowa this morning.  I’ve nothing planned for today, Sat, or Sun, aside from relaxing and vegging out.  Tomorrow going out to lunch with a friend and gaming in the evening.

We are going to a parade and having friends over for a BBQ later.  The kids are excited.  I am too.  Going to be sunny and just below eighty in the Chicago burbs today.  Looks like a good one!

    Stay safe and have fun!

sister and bil later today to bbq some ribs and pork steaks.  St. Louis is the only place I’ve ever seen pork steaks on a menu and haven’t eaten one since I left StL in 1966.  I had an uncle who always cooked them until they were almost like shoe leather but I loved ’em anyway.  Y’all have fun today and be careful.

It’s 66°F on this beautiful 4th of July morning here on the East end of the Columbia River Gorge.  The expected high is in the high 90’s (Weather Channel says 97, but I’m thinking probably only a degree shy of 100, if we don’t make that mark again since they’ve consistently underestimated this year.)

The headache is gone, as are the cramps, but after Mass, I have the day off anyway so there’s no reason for me to push myself by doing any more than necessary today.  I’m gonna pass on the parade today.  After yesterday’s miseries, I think I can love my country without standing in the heat for an hour or two.

Special prayers today in thanksgiving for the freedoms we enjoy in this country, and for those who serve it in uniform.

and happy 4th of July! Today I’m going to stagger walk with the other seniors in the local parade. My cane walking stick will be decorated with red white and blue shinys.

Our Congressman, John Delaney The New Guy, tweeted that he’s going to be at our parade. Given the size of his district, I think that’s a bit of a BFD.

But we no longer have Chris Van Hollen, so I’m sure Mr. Delaney is out there hustlin’ to beat the Tough-Act-To-Follow rap.

it is nice this morning and especially so since I have today’s dinner ready to take to our friends, our friend with the broken hip is doing very well following dr.’s orders so she is healing ahead of schedule. We’re having brats and potato salad with lemon squares for dessert, simple so we can spend more time visiting. The slow warm up has begun, we will be back to seasonal temperatures tomorrow. It was a pleasant break after the string of really hot days. Hope all Moose have a wonderful 4th.

We hosted a neighbor hood 4th party for 16 years, but when the last one grew to at least 75 people I retired the banners. It was fun but a lot of work. Then the 4th became family only parties at our son’s lake house. He sold that house last summer and we’ll have family visiting all next week so today is a good day to be in the garden and keep life simple.

    Happy 4th everyone!

Fogged in again but it might clear up by afternoon, when I plan to catch the free concert by the Golden Gate Park Band (which has been going strong for over 130 years!).

Then back into the hood for a Polish sausage or something at Underdog, an organic hot dog joint a few blocks down the street.

No fireworks for me tonight because I don’t feel like fighting the crowds down at the Marina or the Wharf, and besides the fog will probably hide everything anyway.

    Happy Fourth, everyone!

My phone insists that it is 64 degrees outside. The high is only supposed to get to 94. Both of those temps are weirdly cool for July 4. Not complaining, just saying it’s weird.

I slept late! Kinda doz-y for the last bit, but hey, sleeping late is pretty great for me. I don’t think I woke up at all till 5, and I even went back to sleep after that. Hanging out now, watching Le Tour. Cute boys in spandex. I don’t know why more people don’t watch.

My brother’s not coming this weekend, he’s been working 70 hour weeks, so I hope he rests before his surgery next week.

I’m going to clean house today. Not super-vigorously or anything, but there’s some stuff that’s needed doing. A pretty relaxing day planned.

They’re in Hood River, the county immediately West of mine.

Their franks and sausages aren’t bad, but the texture is not quite as satisfying as biting into a real hot dog.  I do buy some of their products, though, especially when I’m having a craving for something that’s not on my cardiac diet.

  13. It is raining here so at least I won’t have to worry about fireworks going off outside and scaring Pixie. I’m ready for the day. I’ve got hog dogs, corn chips, beer, potato salad, and onion dip ready to munch on while I watch Independence Day. I celebrate the fourth by vegging out. 😉

temps are not bad right now, but it is still stickywickyicky outside.

I went to take photos of all the glory blooming in the garden… promptly was kissed with 237 mosquito bites to celebrate this country’s BD!!

    eeek!!

    😀

Many vets with PTSD do not find this day any fun at all. We used to have a German Shepherd named Trooper. He was the most gun-shy dog I ever saw. We once went to a cookout on the afternoon of July 4th, leaving Trooper in the back yard. When we got home, he had broken the kitchen window trying to get in the house. He was terrified. We never made that mistake again.

As for this being the birthday of our nation, a couple of years ago, I got approval from the VA and National Cemetery for a stone to be placed for my ggg-grandfather. That was long before the days of a Form DD-214, but I had plenty of other documentation. We had a memorial service for him at the National Cemetery, complete with bagpiper. The VA sent a full Colonel to preside over the service, and news media was there. We had no body, since we do not know exactly where he is buried. However, the ceremonial flag used in the service was a 13-star Betsy Ross flag. It was the banner under which he served. As I told a reporter, I got cold chills just having that flag handed to me by the Colonel, knowing what it represented. He and his father, my gggg-grandfather, were there at the birth of this nation. The inscription on the stone says it all.

A photo of his stone in the National Cemetery.

So we went to the parade and it was in the town where Coach Q (Blackhawks head coach) lives.  All of a sudden there he was on a firetruck holding up the cup.  The response was incredible.  Great family parade anyway but that was cool.  Happy Fourth of July!
