Tuesday Morning Herd Check-in: Greetings of the Moosekin

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the Weather Critter Comment are still welcome. 🙂

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

The Recommended list, defined:

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture.

– The Rec list algorithm, per Kysen:

The Rec List is based upon number of recs and number of days on the list.

The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

Don’t use the Recommendation button as a ‘I read this and I like it’ indicator….you can say that in the comments and by rating the comments contained within the diary.

– Per me:

… any post that reflects our values and gets us to think about who we are and our place in the world is valuable to progressives.

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

You can follow the daily moosetrails here: Motley Moose Recent Comments.

Let the greetings begin!

66 degrees this morning, heading for a high of 75. I could live with this all year. However this thing of Alaska being 20 degrees warmer than us is a little weird.

I have decided I am old. We allowed all day Sunday to recover from our road trip. In my younger days, that would have been more than enough. With my aged and decrepit self, however, I still need a nap on Tuesday. Oh, to be young and adorable again…

  2. I asked Jim if he will always love me, and he said, “I plan to!”

hmmm… I wonder what could mess that up…

Perfect here, also. Temp now is 63, heading to high 70s, both today and tomorrow.

Son made it to CO fine.

We got some rain this morning – a tiny little bit, I only had to use the wipers 3 times driving in. But it’s better than nothing. Of course, it’s already nearly 80, so it is lot like steam-baking.

It is oddly warm in this building this morning, I hope that isn’t a foretelling of the day. I hate working in a space that is too warm – you can always put on more clothes or drink a warm beverage, but when your office is hot….

Got feminist theology tonight, should be fun.

And Much Ado About Nothing was finally added to the good theater’s listings for Friday, just waiting to find out when my friends want to go. (Joss Wheedon’s black & white version, with a lot of people from the Whedonverse)

along with a big electrical storm last night. We had everything turned off and unplugged so we watched the storm peacefully. Came right  at dusk too so it was especially pretty. We still have a chance of storms later today. Then it is supposed to clear off and get hot.

morning showers.  It’s 61° now, heading toward highs in the mid 70’s.  Looks like we’re going to be drizzly for a few days, clearing up for the weekend.

I’m expecting an especially busy day today at the office today, and I’m definitely still not back up to 100%.  It will all work out.

Hope everyone has a great first day of summer.

    predicted for Hudson Valley NY.

Yesterday was very odd – right down the road, storm hit – trees and branches down, and we didn’t get a drop of rain.

Mountain micro-climates are a bit weird.

Have had my eyes on Brazil, just got off the phone with my friend in Sao Paulo. Contrary to hyperbolic statements made elsewhere in the blogosphere, this isn’t a revolution – the protests are large in scale, mostly young people who were born after the dictatorship.

One friend posted this to facebook – thought I’d share it here

Today I am taking my daughter to get the shots she needs for kindergarten.  There are four if them.  She is being very brave.  I have promised her some ice cream when it is over.  Wish us luck.

It rained last night.  Gonna be 15 degrees cooler today than yesterday.  Nice.  I held out and didn’t turn the air on.  My mother is coming to watch my son while I take my daughter today.  She is four treatments into her radiation.  So far, so good.

My serum coffee level is dangerously low. Cajun coffee is perking, so relief is in sight.

Not much going on today except work. Son, DiL and grandson are coming up this weekend. Hope to get some serious piddling done in the workshop. I have a couple of model airplanes to finish.

I am working on a story to post on Saturday. I have more on the Lost Airmen of Buchenwald. My friend Kirby Cowan was shot down on June 22, 1944, and ended up as one of the 168 airmen held as “terror flyers” at Buchenwald. A truly ugly story.

got the 1st draft of the Annual Report to the Chair.  Now starting to work on Spring class requests.  Foot’s better now I’ve gotten rid of the gel sock that was supposed to protect the incision but instead was putting more pressure on it.

Anybody heard from Kelley or Khloe?  I hope they’re safe and the fires are either contained or out (or at least moving in another direction) – expect they are or somebody would have posted something somewhere.  I think.  Anyway, {{{HUGS}}} to the Mooselands.

  10. Nurse Kelley

It’s 51° and sunny, maybe going up to 71° before it rains again. Rain in June is a rare blessing here; I’m hoping the grass seed we put out will sprout soon.

Thanks to Jan for getting Khloe’s wifi problem straightened out yesterday. She’s online! (Well, not right now, but whenever she wants.)

Today looks good, the fog is already halfway gone. I’m feeling sore from all the walking I’ve been doing, but I presume it’s good for me. Yesterday was fun; today will be all about recovering. 🙂

  12. princesspat

And I feel much better…..amazing how sleep, food and pain control can can improve my life!

I have a sore throat from the biopsy but I’m not expecting any bad news.

A note of appreciation to kind and sensitive nurses…..a few perfectly chosen words and a warm blanket were a needed comfort yesterday and they were generously given.

  13. catbird song almost the whole way. I can’t believe I never knew about these wonderful creatures until a few years ago. At one point on the trail we hailed a young woman with her puppy, and she asked if our pet was following us — a deer was 30 feet behind us.

We also saw Mr. and Mrs. Goose with their five children. Four were clustered with them and the fifth was a few feet away. As we approached, the fifth one moved to join them and we could see one leg did not work well at all. Aside from that, it looked healthy, same size as the others and the same glossy pre-feather down.

And now back home again for me. Jim just left for a class.

The breeze coming in the kitchen door is just the right temperature, fresh against the skin but not chilling.

I feel a little energized now, unlike yesterday when I was fairly immobile most of the day.

  14. Khloe

G’Morning everyone, from half way up! You are all an especially fine sight to me this morning! Thanks to Ms. ((JanFab)) working her magic yesterday afternoon, I am back online and ready to conquer the world!

Today marks the one week point for me. With Kelley’s help, much healing has been done. But there is much more to do. This afternoon I’ll be learning about programs that are out there to help folks with my issues.

The kitties are adjusting well. Kiki saw her first deer sitting in the backyard, and her eyes about popped out of her head. Abernathy has taken over the bed(aka the throne). Life is great!!!

  15. Lovely day in So. Cal.

Real quick, I place all my works on my little blogspot too, it gets maybe 200 hits a week, but this post I put up on Sunday has had like 150 since Sunday…From Latvia

Why do you imagine the story is resonating with them so?

Oh how do I know where the hits on the blog come from and their operating system?  Got a 29 year old cousin in the NSA he hooks me up with all kinds of data ; )

  16. slksfca

…to belinda ridgewood. She kindly offered to carry it to NN with her so it can be part of the quilt display.

The walk was 1/2-hour each way. First thing I did when I got back home was take off my shoes. Second thing was to brew more coffee to go with the blueberry muffin I bought on the way home.

I meant to take it easy today but since I’m already dressed and energized from the long walk, I think instead I’ll attack some housework and then lie down with my Kindle later on. Tomorrow or Thursday I need to go for another 1/2-hour walk to the hospital where they’re going to draw blood for my quarterly lab tests. At this point I’m thinking it’ll be more like Thursday. I need a full day off!

  17. slksfca

I do love Miss Kitty’s big red bouffant. 😉

Meanwhile, what sun there was is now hidden behind the afternoon onslaught of fog. Glad I got my walk done this morning when it was nicer out.

I’ve done a wee bit of housework and will do a wee bit more while my Kindle recharges. But first I’m getting caught up with emails.

I hope everyone is having a nice afternoon!

And only ended up working an hour-and-a-half past scheduled closing time.

It was worth it, though.  During that “overtime,” I managed to prevent a utility disconnection on a very scared family, and arrange for rent assistance for another family who had been served a “3-day pay or quit” notice.

We’ll have to work with both families to help them better manage their limited resources, and identify additional ones, but one can’t do that until we get them out of the immediate crisis.
