Saturday Morning Herd Check-in: Greetings of the Moosekin

Make sure you let your peeps know where to find you!

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least content.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

You can follow the daily moosetrails here: Motley Moose Recent Comments.

Let the greetings begin!

Woke up and can’t get back to sleep just yet so here I am.

Part of the trouble is that something is weighing on my mind: my best friend of 30 years has been completely out of touch since 2011, not returning calls or emails. I have to admit that I gave up on trying for quite a long while, nearly a year, but I emailed him about a year ago just to say that I missed our friendship and missed HIM.

So I got a reply yesterday, a rather stiff and formal little note saying that he didn’t mean to be out of touch for so long and that he hoped we could reconnect (“maybe someday”) but didn’t know when that would be.

I don’t think this is due to anything I’ve said or done, as he hasn’t been in touch with any of our mutual friends either. It just makes me sad and a little worried about him. And I’ve been lying in bed trying to compose just the right reply to his email.

We’ve been through a lot together over three decades, both good and bad — including traveling together successfully! And I don’t have many friends yet living who go that far back. So I can’t help but feel the loss pretty deeply.

sun shining – looks like a good garden day – wish i could plant these papers I’m grading 🙂

Couldn’t sleep and finally got up to have a small dish of yogurt with honey and check on the herd.  The cats think anytime is a fine time for food and gladly trailed me into the kitchen.

What do all of you do when you can’t sleep?

fifties here in NYC heading for the high sixties.Coffee first and then, if I have courage, the news. Hope it’s a good day for all.

Checked our 2 sites a few times.

Had the radio on, off, on.

Think I’ll put the light out; sometimes that works.

Reasons for insomnia? Not normally necessary.

People who become cold, distant, emotionally unavailable? Sometimes that’s a heads up. Don’t be a victim. You might even say it plain out.

We still friends? I’m not gettin the old vibe..

Of course, what do I know? I passed hermitage years ago.

I still hold people in my heart, tho. Wish more were alive.

    Okay. Lights out.

61 here, heading for a whopping 64. Rainy.

So, I feel like I’m dancing on the grave of the poor Aveo, but…we have already moved on. Shopped around by phone and internet to find prospects for a clean, small used 4×4, then went out for very limited audition.

Behold our new-to-us Jeep Liberty Sport 4×4. Besides being suitable for our new land, roomy, and just chock full of coolth it also came with a 3 year, 36,000 mile engine, drive train & electrical warranty (a strong selling point for this particular vehicle). Fact that it drives like a dream didn’t hurt.

  7. I think (hope!) Jim and I are the only ones awake yet. (Written too soon. Em is up: “Do you want to play a game?” NO! Jen and the baby are up. blech…)

Jim picked up SIL and the last grandkid at the airport last night, returning at midnight. Long day, and a new long day starting.

Son graduated last night. Ceremony was 3 hours long in an arena that must have been 85 degrees. Doctoral candidates were first and took about 2.5 hours of it. Then the master’s candidates zipped by.

No one has gone hungry unless by their own choice. Minor injuries, mostly scuffed parts of the kids as they fall on the pavement of the driveway, etc.

Today is the party in the afternoon, commissioning ceremony in the evening. I teared up barely last night. Tonight will be a different matter. The ceremony is very personal. The significance is very different. There are 7 cadets commissioning.

And to top off the weekend, Son and FFDIL have set a date for their wedding, 2 years from now.

Weather report: 64° and heading to 82. Breezy but no rain. Just about perfect.

Leaving you now. Have a wonderful day.

    Leaving you now.

…even if I just end up reading for awhile. I’ll be back later on to see what the herd is up to.

both of which are fine with me as it gives me yet another excuse to put off planting things and watering what I’ve already planted.

Looks like a good day to go to the gym, do lots of laundry, and write!

Temp is 61 F. here, heading for a high of 68 F.  We’re going out to dinner with a friend, so at least I don’t have to cook!

I hate it that so many of you are having insomnia. The dark hours of the night are best spent sleeping, so those evil twins anxiety and despair leave you alone.

Silky, we have a mutual friend who has long bouts of crippling depression. When she disappears for extended periods of time, I send her emails with the subject line, “Don’t answer this!” (letting her know no obligation is attached to the missive) and I include a photo or short video designed to make her laugh. She emerged from one long bout of depression long enough to tell me they helped. I think knowing you’re not forgotten is an anchor of sorts.

I didn’t state that very well; time to mainline some more caffeine. 🙂

It was a much longer drive than we anticipated, but everything about being here is better than we imagined it would be so all is well. Long naps with the view and sounds of the waves have been my main activity.

  13. Been sleeping in the last couple of days. This infection does not want to go away. Coughed so hard the other day that I severely pulled a muscle in my side so the slightest little cough is agony.

Off to the store in a couple of minutes then some work on costumes. My niece wants to do Medieval Avengers for Heroes Con that is coming up next month. Need to alter a couple of pieces for her and her youngest. She wants me to go in costume too so need to alter a skirt to do Black Widow. Hey it is an easy costume. A small alteration for the top from Harry Potter night. A ruffle on the skirt bottom of the skirt I paid a whole $4.00 for at Goodwill and the red hair I already have.

Working on some art this afternoon as well as getting a couple more pieces up on Fine Arts America for sale. This one is called Japanese Garden. I needed something peaceful after a rough day.
