Indigenous Food Traditions: Frybread

By request, this will be, I hope, the first in an occasional series about some of our traditional foods.  Where appropriate, I’ll include my own recipes, which everyone should feel free to borrow.  Just be warned:  I tend to be a “pinch of this/dash of that” kind of cook, so you may need to adjust things to your own tastes.

Another caveat:  I’ll include relevant history and cultural notes where appropriate, but there will be few, if any, links in these.  I’m taking the oral tradition approach, and simply speaking from our own experiences. With nearly 600 recognized tribes (and hundreds more that have been decertified, or have merged over the centuries, or simply no longer exist), our histories and experiences and cultural traditions will vary widely. These are simply ours.

Over the jump, more about that sinful staple of the Indian diet:  Frybread.

Nurse Kelley Sez: Moondai Furbutts by Triciawyse

NOTE: I’m posting this for triciawyse, who has ‘puter problems. If I weren’t so lazy I would remove the rules that aren’t necessary here because we’re all wonderful, but I AM lazy. Please just ignore them and enjoy teh critters!

Those of you who already either know me or know of me know that I am a massive pootie person. We  moved into an apartment and now have a pootie, named Princess Ashley; however I grew up with both cats & dogs and I love both. I do not discriminate against any animal & love animal photos of all kinds. Please enjoy the following and add any photos that you think the community would like to see. Now, enjoy the photos & have some fun.

AS TO THE TERM WOOZLE – ONE OF OUR BELOVED KOSSACKS, Pandoras Box, STARTED CALLING HER DOGS WOOZLES AS A TERM OF ENDEARMENT AND THE TERM STUCK, JUST AS WITH POOTIES AND PHILLYGAL. PHILLYGAL HAD A CAT NAMED POOTIE AND THE TERM STUCK!

Of course, the usual rules apply:

1. Be nice to each other

2. No trolling the diary

3. If you hate pootie diaries, leave now.

4. Share any and all pootie/woozle photos or issues that you would like to. When it comes to problems, we may just have someone with experience who can help.

5. Whatever happens in the outer blog STAYS in the outer blog. DO NOT SHIT-STIR IN HERE! Shit stirring will be dealt with the same way we deal with trolls.

6. Also, there is no such thing as stealing a photo around here, all are offered with love and may be borrowed with just as much love.

HAHAHAHAHA HAHAHA!

President Obama Inaugurated for Second Term!

Recall the GOP Agenda after the 2008 election…

How’d that work out for you, Turtle Man???

thanks, Obama

Since you have taken office, I have gained 10 pounds, thanks a lot.

I have run out of milk on more that one occasion, and have had fruits and vegetables go bad in my fridge before I got a chance to eat them, wtf.

We haven’t had an inch of snow in 328 days in Chicagoland, a record, I am pretty sure this is your fault too. Thanks.

An Open Letter to John Boehner

Dear Speaker Boehner,

Always remember, this year and next, that you are the Speaker of the House for a country that re-elected President Obama, that increased the Democratic majority in the Senate, and that cast over a million and a half more votes for Democratic congressmen than for Republican ones. You are the speaker, but not the majority leader; Nancy Pelosi leads the majority as chosen by the people. You sit in the Speaker’s chair because many Republican state legislators defied democracy and gerrymandered their states. They deprived their citizens of an effective franchise.

You did not do this, but you are charged with leading one of the two legislative chambers. How can you do that responsibly and with due regard for the true majority in the House? You have already begun in one regard, by ignoring the Hastert rule twice. Throw that anti-democratic rule out the window. It never had a policy basis. It was always and only a partisan, anti-democratic dodge to keep control.

Another thing you can and ought to do: consult with Nancy Pelosi. She represents the majority – let her voice be heard, let amendments be considered, let bills out of committee. In short, trust the American people and democracy.

No more road blocks. No more obstruction for the sake of obstruction. No more silly bills that will never pass the Senate, even when passed for the twentieth or thirtieth time. Just settle down and do the work of the people.

I invite all my readers to send this open letter to John Boehner in your own names. I particularly invite the Republicans who are reading this. As the daughter and granddaughter of Republicans, as a former Republican, I would love to see the party return to its principles. As a several-great granddaughter of a Republican Civil War soldier who fought for liberty, as the granddaughter of a Republican who told Branch Rickey to hire Jackie Robinson, as the daughter of a Republican who signed, with Eisenhower, the appointment papers for the first African-American post master in New York, as a former Republican who voted for Gerry Ford (he of the Earned Income Tax Credit and the executive order against assassinations), nothing would please me more than to see the Republican Party grand again.

The Daily F Bomb, Monday 1/21 Inauguration Day

Happy Inauguration Day!  I remember being in those crowds four years ago. Never before had I seen so many people crowded together and moving so slowly and STILL all in a fabulous mood. Every time the crowd had to stop moving for a moment, people would turn to whoever they were next to and ask, “So where are you from?” It was really fun, really amazing.

This year I get to watch from the comfort of my couch. Crowded with cats, clutching a cup of coffee. Hopefully not coughing. 😉

I will not let you off the hook on my nosy questions, however. Why would I do that?

For starters, what was your first car? Should there be nuts in brownies? What about frosting? If you were being inaugurated, whose bible (or what other book) would you want to be sworn in on? Do you like Michelle’s bangs? What did you keep in  your high school locker? When you travel, do you travel light or heavy? What scene that you witnessed in your pre-every phone having a camera life do you wish you had been able to capture in a photo?

Now, it’s time for your history lesson. Pay attention, and don’t forget to read the hovers.

computer art

When the arthritis got so severe in my hands that I couldn’t hold a paintbrush any more I switched over to computer generated art. I can do everything I did with pen and ink and a paintbrush with an ergonomic mouse. I use Bryce 7 for the main work and DAZ 4.5 for most of the figures as well as Photoshop for touch-ups and other places like Turbosquid to get my models. DAZ is currently offering the composing software for free at http://www.daz3d.com/.

I generally survey a number of news sites around the world and country, choose around 15 articles I can quote, and a few links.  Tonight I am leaning toward social justice.  Sometimes I editorialize.  I also tend not to cover the headlines, but look for smaller stories.

I am so pleased that our country has re-elected Barack Hussein Obama and I love the overlap of these historic dates.  Yes We Did Again.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

There Would Be No Obama Without King

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” King wrote in one of the more familiar passages. “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial ‘outside agitator’ idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds.”

As I read King’s brilliant argument for direct action against injustice, I saw more than a man who lives only in old footage. I saw a father fighting for a better future for his children. I saw a man who was not willing to wait for change. I saw myself.

King wrote of seeing “the vast majority of … twenty million Negro brothers smothering in an airtight cage of poverty in the midst of an affluent society.” When I read that I saw Philadelphia, a place where 28 percent of the population-many of them African American-live in poverty while surrounded by wealth.

King went on to write of tears welling up in his six year old daughter’s eyes as he explained to her that she couldn’t go to the amusement park because of segregation. He wrote of the concerns that any husband and father would have for his family, and at that moment I saw King for who he truly was-a man.
