Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Open Thread: Fourth of July

Let me open with some predictions:

10 minutes before Obama’s Independence Day remarks are publicized, he will be slammed on FOXNews for revealing his disdain of America: “Never before has a President of the United States, whatever his skin color may be, treated his country with such total disregard for its heritage and traditions of liberty and freedom.”

10 minutes after his remarks are publicized, FOXNews will protest his politicization of our national holiday: “Never before in our history has a President, whatever his skin color may be, exploited our national holiday in such a cynical and shameless self-serving partisan manner.”

Happy 4th to all.  I recommend reading the Declaration aloud.  I do so every year, especially since I’ve had kids.  It really is the “Never Mind the Bollocks” of political rhetoric.  3 and 4 generation ago, my forebears arrived here in search of economic opportunity and civil liberty.  Things generally ended badly for their relatives who could not or did not follow.

The Threats You Don't See

This April I met an energetic young man named Dillon Beresford. He told me that he had gotten some SCADA gear and setup a lab in his apartment and discovered a raft of vulnerabilities that he would be presenting shortly at TakeDownCon.

The most interesting aspect of the meeting was that it was essentially entirely random – I wasn’t anyplace I would have expected to meet the next rock star of industrial security.

What Can Gentiles Say? How (Not?) to Contribute to a Painful Debate

I’m only now beginning to catch up on the latest round of self questioning launched by Allison Benedikt’s reflective piece in The Awl about being a Jewish American growing up in Ohio, attending Zionist summer camp, visiting Israel, watching her sister move there, then dating and marrying a Non Jewish American.

There’s little doubt this piece has stirred the debate, intensified by Peter Beinart in his essay last year ‘The Failure of the Jewish American Establishment’ to another level, but that’s too big a topic to be covered here. And besides, what can I, as a non-American, non-Jew, say about it?

And herein lies the problem….

A Commendation to Three Brave Republicans

By: Inoljt, http://mypolitikal.com/

One avenue of controversy has been with regards to the Fourteenth Amendment. Republican leaders, such as Senator Lindsey Graham, have incited a controversy over what they label “anchor babies.” They propose amending the Constitution to end birthright citizenship – ironically, one of the Republican Party’s proudest achievements, and a crucial tool in assimilating American immigrants.

A depressingly high number of Republicans have toed to this party line. For this, those Republicans broken the line – voicing support for keeping the Constitution as it is – deserve commendations.

Wayback Machine: Glenn Beck's InsaniTea (w/ bonus)

Welcome to the Wayback Machine, a sporadically recurring diary series for Motley Moose. The Wayback Machine revisits diaries of days gone by…a peek into our moosely past. The original diary will be linked to, and reposted in full, but, with a fresh comment thread. If you have requests for the Wayback Machine, use the ‘Contact the Moose’ link at the bottom of the page and let us know your ideas.

In (dis)honor of Glenn Beck’s last show on Faux…we bring you a Moosey Golden Oldie from sricki: Glenn Beck’s InsaniTea (first appeared on Moose April 15th, 2009). Also, as a bonus, since sricki writes so eloquently on good ole Glenn…a snippet of one of her Wingnut Watch diaries (Nov. 22nd, 2010 edition) is included at the end. I think everyone will agree that she has a way with words (and perhaps a bit of a thing for Mr. Beck?).

As someone somewhere once said: “you can’t know where you are going without knowing first where you have been”

So, join us for a look back, and a (hopefully) last farewell to Glenn Beck….
