Egypt Open Thread: Feb 11 – Mubarak's Long Goodbye UPDATED

Last night in Cairo hundreds of thousands of people of all walks of life stood in Tahrir Square waiting for their ‘President’ of thirty years to announce his resignation.

Instead, the crowd was presented with the face of a crooked old man lost inside the stained-glass windows of the billionaire palace lifestyle his people have paid for.

It is past dawn in Egypt today, and the forces aligned against each other will play out one way or another.

Bedbugs Get Booth at CPAC

Lobbying for unsavory causes is a time honored tradition in Washington DC, so it shouldn’t surprise anyone that even pernicious little bed critters can get into the act:

CPAC Infested With Bedbugs, and Also Actual Blood-Sucking Insects

The three-legged stool of conservatism is strong and united at CPAC! Yes, as intelligent and alive as a small piece of furniture. However, the stool may not last long, as the hotel they chose, the Marriott Wardham Park, seems to currently be infested with bedbugs.

In Support of Egypt

I have never been to Egypt. My brother went on a school trip there in during the time we lived in Iran, but I always wished I had been able to go there. I lived in Iran for five years, although the final year I attended boarding school in Salzburg and My parents moved to southern Iran to a place called Chahbahar. It is an interesting place, look it up:~J

While I had hoped that the revolutionary protests in Iran in 2009 would have turned over the current government, I do not believe the revolution is over, but we will need to wait a while before it rises again. I hope the people of Persia can take their country back soon. At this time, it is one of the few countries in the world that are almost completely run by a religion. At least I think that is the case. Sigh. Now I will need to look that up>:~I

Mubarak Departure In Hours

The Supreme Council of Armed Forces has declared emergency meetings for the next 24 hours and they just spoked on TV. The thing is, Mubarak is the head of this council, yet he did not seem to be in that meeting. That unofficially says that Mubarak has stepped down unofficially and it will be announced in the next few hours.

I daresay, congratulations Egypt. The history books will soon be writing about another brutal and unjust pharaoh.

YouTubes, Make Me Laugh Damn it!

So I have been very bummed lately. A lot of bad stuff has happened over the past few years and I am ready to be finished with it now. Oh and YouTube sucks, as it has changed significantly over the past year. Fox won’t let their…uh, er…’programming’ be shown anymore, so why bother? Given all of that, I dare YouTube, make me laugh.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah. Oooph. Yup, that made me rotf & lmao. So did this…

Ok. That was very funny and it made me laugh. It also made me fairly pissed, as I believe that marijuana should be legal. Period. That it is not available medically, is total bullshit. Legalize and decriminalize drugs. Save money and people. Put more money into prevention, accurate education, and treatment if needed. Grrrr.

Ahem. Here is the obligatory year according to Jib Jab.

Sorry. Kind of late. I am always late with stuff. I miss Headzup and TPMtv’s “The Day in 100 seconds”. Can we get them back please?

Comparing Barack Obama, John Kerry, and Mike Dukakis

By: Inoljt, http://mypolitikal.com/

In the aftermath of the 2008 presidential election, the New York Times famously posted a map depicting county-by-county changes from the 2004 election. A different version of this map is below:

Comparing Barack Obama,John Kerry, and Mike Dukakis

What is remarkable about this map is the evenness of the Democratic movement – a 9.72% shift to them from 2004. With the exception of a diagonal patch of Appalachia, President Barack Obama improved throughout the country. It did not matter if a county was located in Utah or California, whether it belonged to a dense city or a thinly populated farm, or whether it was poor or rich – almost every county still voted more Democratic than it did in 2004.

If one moves to a statewide basis, the shift is still fairly uniform.

Compared to the county-by-county map, this map lends itself more easily to analysis.

The Calm: An Egyptian Open Thread

In Cairo and across Egypt things are settling into a Next Phase it would seem. Enough time has passed that people on all sides – including musicians – have been able to think and produce and prepare for…?

What’s your take, Mooses? Is it The Calm, and if so, what is it Before?

Update Al Jazeera Liveblog is a great source for tracking the general trend.
