Hang On, Mr. Putin, Let Me Check My Palm…

I want to draw you a picture.  The President of the United States is sitting across the table from the leader of the second most powerful country in the world.  An agreement of historic proportions is about to be made – or unmade.  The tension in the room is palpable, billions around the world hang on every nuance.  The future of the species hangs in the balance.

Then the President glances down.  He frowns, trying to focus on…

…the scribbled and sweat-smeared notes scrawled on the palm of his hand.

The world cringes as nuclear missiles fly.

Iraq: It’s Not Getting Better

By: Inoljt, http://mypolitikal.com/

Since the end of July, there have been two massive bombings in Iraq. On July 31st, 29 were killed when a several bombs exploded outside Shiite mosques. On Friday, a truck bomb in another Shiite mosque detonated, killing another 37.

Regular days are also violent affairs. Take August 3rd. In the restive city of Mosul, five Iraqis were killed by separate attacks. Two bombs in Baghdad exploded, killing up to six Iraqis and wounding 26. Near Falluja, another bomb killed two and wounded seven.

Fun Facts About Democratic Presidents- OPEN THREAD

I just got in from an enjoyable night with old college friends…and no, still no snow here in New York, so FORECAST FAIL!

During the course of the night, I was reminded of a fun little political factoid.

It’s possible that Barack Obama’s Senate seat could be lost to Republican Mark Kirk if the rumored scandals about Democrat Alexi Giaanoulius turn out to be true. If it happens, it would be a terrible embarassment, but not something unique for a Democratic President. Let me explain…

The Psychology of Denial: Climate Warming Scam

It’s been a stormy time in the science of climatology since various emails were hacked that revealed the British-based Climate Research Unit, a major contributor to the IPCC, had used bad data and dodgy coding in some of its reports.

The minimal scientific impact of this has been explored widely, but I’m more interested in the way it has regalvanised a movement which, dominant in the US blogosphere, and now increasingly vocal over here, seeks to deny the agreed probabilities of  both climate warming, and human contribution to it.

Once again, the blogosphere, while providing wonderful resources for fact checking, data analysis and corroboration, actually seems to be working in reverse, and actively promoting groupthink, irrationality and faith-based argument…

Watching The Tea Party Convention

C-Span has been running the videos from the Tea Party Convention in Nashville all night, and I started watching when I got up in the morning… and, believe me, this is scary stuff. I especially was taken by one Joseph Farah, who is the Founder, CEO and Editor In Chief of WorldNetDaily.

This is scathing stuff about the country’s move to Socialism over 90 or so years, the Marxist description of President Obama, and the focus on changing our underlying culture with its non-political organizations away from the socialist-leaning entities that, he says, they have become.

Editorial Guidelines

Editorial Guidelines

Editing

1. Do not change or delete the content of a diary without first giving the diarist the opportunity to do so.

Exception: Diary title if it contains profanity (e.g., Fuck –> F**k).

2. If asked to edit a diary, edit for grammar, punctuation and spelling, not for content. Regardless of the content of the diary, never edit in a way that changes the diarist’s intent.

3. If a diary is so flawed that it needs to be edited, yet the diarist has not requested help, email the diarist and clear the edit with them before correcting the diary. If the diary does not break the site rules, do not edit or delete the diary without the consent of the diarist.

Front Page Promotions

1.
Be sure that the diary is something that properly represents the Moose as a whole. Front Page diaries should as closely as possible match up with the overall views of the Moose. There are well-written diaries — good diaries — that just do not belong on the FP.
*For example: If someone posts an informative, well-written diary that is anti-Health Care Reform, it still should not be FP’d because it does not represent the majority stance of the Moose, and we would not want it representing the community as what a new visitor sees first.

2. Avoid FP’ing diaries of a personal nature, or diaries which contain especially controversial content.

3. Try not to FP Open Threads or Lounge Diaries unless there are no current content-bearing diaries that can be FP’d. There is nothing wrong with Open Threads or Lounge Diaries, but we should aim for content on the FP.

4. If an editor or admin did not FP their own diary, ask before doing it for them. There is often a reason they opted not to do it themselves.

5. If a diary has recently been FP’d, refrain from writing or promoting another FP diary directly over it. Let it ride for a half day or so (length of time will be flexible depending on how busy the site is — the busier the site, the lesser the time needed between FP’d diaries)

6. When FP’ing a diary

          – Correct egregious spelling and/or grammatical errors, but do not edit content.
          – Adjust the “above the fold” content so that it is approximately two paragraphs or less, plus an image.
          – Attach an image or YouTube clip related to content if one is not included.
          – Make sure the image is ___ or smaller.
          – Double check to ensure that the diary adheres to the Posting Guidelines.

Prescribing Improved Nutrition to Combat HIV/AIDS in Africa

Cross posted from Nourishing the Planet.

Everywhere I travel in Africa, there’s increasing acknowledgement about the importance of nutrition when it comes to treating HIV/AIDS.  Many retroviral and HIV/AIDS drugs don’t work if patients aren’t getting enough vitamins and nutrients in their diets or accumulating enough body fat.

According to Dr. Rosa Costa, Director of the Kyeema Foundation in Mozambique, many farmers are often too sick to grow crops, but “chickens are easy.”

The International Rural Poultry Center of the  Kyeema Foundation  and the  International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics  are working with farmers-most of them women-to raise chickens on their farms. Because women are often the primary caregivers for family members with HIV/AIDS, they need easy, low-cost sources of both food and income.

Unlike many crops, raising free-range birds can require few outside inputs and very little maintenance from farmers. Birds can forage for insects and eat kitchen scraps, instead of expensive grains. They provide not only meat and eggs for household use and income, but also pest control and manure for fertilizer.
