Democratic Senators Harry Reid and Dick Durbin have released a joint statement indicating that Roland Burris, appointed by embattled governor Rod Blagojevich, is now the Senator-designate from Illinois and will be sworn in as President-elect Barack Obama’s replacement in the Senate on January 15, 2009.

….and Here's Hootie!!
My circumstances have finally afforded me enough free time to come back to the Moose.
After a very long presidential campaign in which I invested much of my time and finances, I had to regroup. This hiatus included work weeks of 70 hours and quality time with my two sons (couple hockey games, a basketball game and many trips to grandma’s).
Suffice it to say everything is back to normal.
I do not regret the past year and a half. Many days spent away from my boys canvassing in other states and spending money I really did not have. It was well worth it, and January 20, 2009 will be my reward.
The Republican Rump – We're Losing the Patient
This is simply depressing to watch. They don’t get it. They really don’t. The Republican Party has apparently decided that moderation in the pursuit of victory is no virtue, and that fanaticism in the pursuit of ideological purity is no vice. Anybody been watching the RNC Chairman race? Michael Steele is as close to a “moderate” as there is in that race. And hey, nothing against Steele (he seems a decent chap), but he makes the point.
I read RedState and still post there openly as a liberal. It gives me some perspective as to what the Republican activists are thinking. I think I’m more frightened now than I was just prior to the election. They’re even more out of their minds now!

Trail Maids Outrage NAACP in Alabama
Welcome to my state. We here in Alabama are gearing up for the historic inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama, and we’re doing so with style.
Well… at least it was stylish sometime in the 1800s.

How did this Happen? British LGBT Community on the Rise UPDATED
A brief diary inspired by an Andrew Sullivan piece today What Equality Looks Like.
He notes:
When I came to America from Britain, the gay rights movement was way ahead here of the old country. No longer. Here is a list of the most powerful openly gay people in Britain. The whole list is a staggering contrast with the US.

Ask Not… **Updated**
Slightly edited and re-posted from November 5, 2009. I was listening to Tavis Smiley this morning and was reminded of this earlier post. I will update with the clip from Morning Joe-Boy (or “Jughead” as Stewart calls him), if I can find a tube. Tavis rocks. I have liked him forever. And I really like Jughead. Heh.

I have a couple of important issues that I want addressed by our new President. God, after eight long years, it feels so good to call someone President again. President Barack Hussein Obama.
However, I am going to skip over my desires and speak to something I think our new President needs. Something our country needs. Something our world needs.
Should the Obama Administration Talk to Hamas?
The Guardian is claiming today, through unnamed ‘sources’ that, Obama will open some kind of dialogue with Hamas.
The Guardian has spoken to three people with knowledge of the discussions in the Obama camp. There is no talk of Obama approving direct diplomatic negotiations with Hamas early on, but he is being urged by advisers to initiate low-level or clandestine approaches, and there is growing recognition in Washington that the policy of ostracising Hamas is counter-productive. A tested course would be to start contacts through Hamas and the US intelligence services, similar to the secret process through which the US engaged with the PLO in the 1970s. Israel did not become aware of the contacts until much later.
