Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Archive for November 2008

the petty department of very very small

Back when Ted Kennedy was too drunk to ask for help when he drove his car off a bridge into some very deep water and a girl ended up dead, it looked like his political future would also die.  His hometown constituents forgave him and he didn’t even go into recovery.  Then he became a voice for the progressives, and it seemed like, hey, he’s made up for it.

Well, I know he’s dying, long after Mary Jo of course, but he’s going out the way he nearly did before, not by letting a girl die, but by killing this girl’s dream.

Check this out:

It seems Ted won’t allow Hillary to work on health care reform.  I wonder why? She’d put in universal health care, which is less than single payer, something Barack would like to see, but more than universal access, which is less than I’d like to see.  And less than Paul Krugman thinks can actually work.

How small and petty of Ted, to take his last days to keep a good girl drown (I mean down?).  Hillary’s plan would have sucked the huge profits out of that industry and led to the real possibility of single payer.

I hope Barack isn’t too respectful toward the dying to say something to Ted about his refusal to share.   The primary is over, she helped Barack win, but no, can’t let that girl have anything she wants. Ted doesn’t want her cooties fooling around with his committee.

The Latest Conservative Talking Point – This Is A Center-right Country

It’s hard to turn the channel to a cable news station these days without hearing some conservative pundit making the claim that America is a center-right country. They have been making this claim for a long time. It is one of the core beliefs of the conservative movement stated with the same assurance given to the belief in supply-side economics. Unfortunately, for them, neither claim is valid.

One thing that I’ve come to recognize about the modern conservative movement is that the more forcefully conservatives claim something is true without offering any substantiating proof the more likely it is to be false. That’s the case with the center-right claim.

This country hasn’t been center-right for a long time. Oh sure, there are some issues that pull the electorate to the right, mainly Gays, God, and guns. However, the majority in this country favor moderate to liberal stances on almost all of the major issues. The conservatives are obviously in the denial stage of grief after losing power.

Definition of Moosers? Weekend Thread…

In order to define the Moosers I used the following definition while commenting in a MyDD diary.

Like MyDDers, Moosers (if I can use that word) are a bunch of diverse, esoteric, eccentric individuals.

I should have added “wonderful and talented” to the adjectives. So what is your definition of Moosers or how you would like to be defined as?

So what are you doing this weekend? Keep plugging us in to your weekend routine..

Oh Noes…Where’s the Funny?!

I am kind of bummed today. I am missing something very important to me, and am not sure when I will find it again. You see, I must laugh often, and my favorite target is almost painfully absent.

I can be a bit too serious and have learned that I must seek out humor as much as I can. When I was a Child Protection Investigator, the need for humor was absolute. My favorite kind of humor has always been political, and it really is the only time I can make fun of people without feeling bad.

Suddenly I am lost. Suddenly there isn’t really anyone to laugh at in politics. I am not a mean person, but my most aggressive and evil tendencies do come out during elections. Herein lies my conundrum.

Things Have Changed

I came out as a lesbian in 1981. I had known I was gay most of my life, but put faces and a community to that knowledge in the late 70’s, as the gay community starting fighting for equal rights in earnest. I remember reading articles in Time and Newsweek in the late 1970’s

Tinker Secretary of Reusing American Trash

Now that Barack has his job application site on line and everyone is in hurry up to be part of his efforts to change our landscape, I’d like to suggest a new cabinet position – Tinker Secretary.

Good but Strange Days….

Well since the election I have attempted to return to the progressive blogosphere full force ahead and the results have been mixed at best.  Not at the moose of course 😉  It sort of seems to me of what I imagined people were feeling in Europe at the end of WWII.  People hobbling out of bombed out buildings, reuniting with their families, etc.

President-elect Obama’s Press Conference With Text and Video

President Elect Barack Obama gave his first press conference since the election.  The primary focus was on the economy. I thought he looked very Presidential.

The following is a statement read by President-elect Barack Obama before his first press conference since Election Day.

This morning, we woke to more sobering news about the state of our economy. The 240,000 jobs lost in October marks the 10th consecutive month that our economy has shed jobs. In total, we’ve lost nearly 1.2 million jobs this year, and more than 10 million Americans are now unemployed. Tens of millions of families are struggling to figure out how to pay the bills and stay in their homes. Their stories are an urgent reminder that we are facing the greatest economic challenge of our lifetime, and we must act swiftly to resolve them.

The United States has only one government and one President, and until January 20th of next year, that government is the current Administration. I have spoken to President Bush, and I appreciate his commitment to ensuring that his economic policy team keeps us fully informed as developments unfold.
