Here’s today’s Motley Monday Shot of the Week, a female Eastern Pondhawk dragonfly. Females and immature males are this happy green to blend with the grass. Males get a dusty light blue coloration when they mature. Like birds, it’s the male in most dragonfly species that are the most colorful. With Eastern Pondhawks, the females have the brighter color, but only to blend with spring grass.

This photo was taken on a cold damp late Autumn day. The butterfly just crawled around on the bush and posed. It wasn’t until I looked at the shot that I realized what was going on. See the water droplets on the wings? The butterfly needed to dry out and the damp, overcast weather was keeping that from happening. It was gone in the afternoon when I came back by.

We break today from our normal Monday format to commiserate with those who had a truly wonderful St. Patrick’s Day yesterday and are regretting it today. Plus, it gives me an excuse to practice a new skill!

Back story: I’m a bit of a dragonfly fiend; any bugs cool, dragonflies especially so. I was watching a female dragonfly lay her eggs in a pond near our home when I heard a plop and she was gone. A few minutes later, I caught sight of this guy out of the corner of my eye. He was a good 5 or 6 inches long, just huge.
