Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Blue-Collar Clinton Democrat on Palin

I come from a blue-collar, union family in Northern West Virginia.  My father was active in the United Steelworkers of America and my mother was active in the National Education Association.  My father retired many years ago and my mother now works in academic services at a local private university.

My parents both voted for Ross Perot in 1992 & 1996 and had to hold their noses when voting for Gore in 2000.  They feel that the Democratic Party abandoned blue collar workers in the 1990s when they embraced free trade and left workers to fend for themselves.

This spring, like me, they were supporters of Hillary Clinton.  And like me, they are now supporters of Senator Obama.  If they are any indication of what rural, blue-collar Democrats are thinking about this race, Sarah Palin has backfired on McCain big-time.

Two Reactions. One Leader.

In light of the historic–and troubling–events that transpired on Capital Hill, I believe it’s worth looking at how our presidential candidates responded.  In a moment of crisis in which the people are anxious and Congress cannot overcome partisan bickering, how did Senator Obama and Senator McCain react?

The Ultimate October Surprise

After a few weeks of hand-wringing by Democrats about why the race is so tight, Obama seems have broken into a clear national lead.

From Rasmussen:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Sunday-including the first day of post-debate polling-is unchanged. Barack Obama once again attracts 50% of the vote while John McCain earns 44%. This six-point advantage matches Obama’s biggest lead yet and marks the first time he has held such a lead for two-days running (see trends).

Do You Feel Safe?

I’ve been really out of it these last few days as my first round of exams begin.  I spent nearly the entire day consumed with sampling distributions of the mean, the factors that influence power, and the central limit theorem.  Yes, psychology can be that boring.

Hillary Didn’t Want to be VP

This is as close to an official statement as we will get on the VP issue between now and November.  In an appearance today on The View, former President Bill Clinton revealed that Hillary never really wanted to be vice-president, but would have accepted the job out of a sense of duty.
