Motley Monday Check in and Mooselaneous Musings

Good morning Motley Meese! Hope your weekend was lovely. Remember to let your peeps know where you are!

Here’s today’s Motley Monday Shot of the Week. Right now I’ll be throwing in some favorites from my archives, but once the weather warms (assuming it ever does) I’ll post my week’s best shot.

This photo was taken on a cold damp late Autumn day. The butterfly just crawled around on the bush and posed. It wasn’t until I looked at the shot that I realized what was going on. See the water droplets on the wings? The butterfly needed to dry out and the damp, overcast weather was keeping that from happening. It was gone in the afternoon when I came back by.

Motley Monday Check in and Mooselaneous Musings

Good morning Motley Meese! Hope your weekend was lovely. Remember to let your peeps know where you are!

We break today from our normal Monday format to commiserate with those who had a truly wonderful St. Patrick’s Day yesterday and are regretting it today. Plus, it gives me an excuse to practice a new skill!

I’ve Never Met My Best Friend: Pondering online friendships

This diary was prompted by a recent discussion elsewhere. It’s not meant to be a deep work of philosophy or literature, just musings on the questions ‘Are online friendships real? Do they have the same meaning and impact as off-line friendships?’ They’re questions that bring out strong opinions on both sides.

My opinion, as the title makes clear, is that online friendships can be just as powerful as in person relationships. They’re not the same, it’s true. But they can be just as precious.

My two best friends are on-line friends. One I’ve met once when trs and I swung by her house a couple of years ago during our vacation to help her out with a couple of things. We’d been friends for several years by then, though, without having met. She’s about 560 miles from me. My best friend I’ve never met is almost 1600 miles away. I hope to finally meet her this summer after 4 years of friendship.

In both cases, we started with chats in online comment threads, progressed to e-mails and then to phone calls. I have other online friends; some I’ve met at meet-ups, some not. Many I’ve met on political sites and then friended on Facebook. Because I have issues with social skills, interacting with them primarily in writing works well for me.

Today is day two of “so many meetings I can’t get any work done”. The hardest part about meetings for me is not letting the other participants see that I’d rather be in the dentist’s chair. Anyway, I’ll be around for a while this morning, then will check back between ordeals.

Back story: I’m a bit of a dragonfly fiend; any bugs cool, dragonflies especially so. I was watching a female dragonfly lay her eggs in a pond near our home when I heard a plop and she was gone. A few minutes later, I caught sight of this guy out of the corner of my eye. He was a good 5 or 6 inches long, just huge.

Snow has started and is supposed to deposit 10 to 15 inches in the Northern Shenandoah Valley, 15+ if you listen to some sources. Me, I prefer to tune them out…lalalalalala I can’t hear you!!

Meanwhile trs, who as part of his job responsibilities will spend the next 12 hours or so attempting to keep the streets clear, is showing little to no sympathy for my plight. And Kidlet, who isn’t likely to find her way back to school before next Monday is finding the whole thing highly enjoyable.

Oh yeah, and that’s trs doing his Indiana Jones impression. He insists that’s his best side.

Wednesday Watering Hole: Check In & Hangout for the Herd

Good morning, Moosekind. Don’t forget to let your peeps know where to find you.

The common Moose, Alces alces, unlike other members of the deer family, is a solitary animal that doesn’t form herds. Not so its rarer but nearest relative, Alces purplius, the Motley Moose. Though sometimes solitary, the Motley Moose herds in ever shifting groups at the local watering hole to exchange news and just pass the time.
