Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Aug. 17 through Aug. 23

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings diary series give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

In lieu of daily check-ins, which have gone on hiatus, Welcomings diaries will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning) and then, if necessary due to a large number of comments, again on Wednesday or Thursday to close out the week. To find the diaries, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

    tired.

Had a very long but fruitful day yesterday – attended my annual women’s meeting – held at a friend’s house near me.  We go back to the 60’s – she was in the Young Lords with me, her husband is a former Panther.  They both are SEIU organizers.

Each year women gather – some in their 80’s- others middle-aged – some daughters and granddaughters – most of us have a history of activism – in the community, in unions, in the arts. It is a mixed group – a majority Latina with some black and white Americans too.

We each bring a quote from a woman who has inspired us, or tell a story as we sit in the circle. There is lots of food, swimming and hugs aplenty when tears come.

This year we talked a lot about our sons, brothers, fathers, partners who live under the threat of “death by police” daily.

One woman talked of her struggle to help her wrongfully convicted son who has been incarcerated for 17 years – and it now looks like, with the help of a team of pro-bono lawers and DNA tests he may win his release.

Groups like the Innocence Project are very important.

    http://www.innocenceproject.org/

We also talked about the Aug 23rd march for justice in NYC which will head over to Staten Island – to where Eric Garner was killed by a police officer.

The March and Rally is being supported by NAN, SEIU and the Teachers union

I’m planning to get on a bus that is leaving from upstate and heading to the city.

    Time for more coffee!

(Not looking forward to dealing with some comments this morning at orange, from the people who view the residents of Ferguson as animals and Micheal Brown as a dead thug.  Too many of these comments popping up on ostensibly progressive sites)

Eating breakfast, watching Up. They had a pretty stupid segment about Rick Perry. And now they’re spending a lot of time talking to Michael Steele. Oh – and praising Rand Paul’s statement on Ferguson. Sigh.

Today: church & visiting my friend.

  3. It is 59 degrees here on its way up to 82 with thunderstorms in the forecast.

I went to bed with the speech of Captain Johnson in my head and hope (courtesy of Portlaw’s brother) in my heart. I woke up with two breaking news items in my mailbox: one, that the private autopsy which the family requested and paid for showed that Michael Brown was shot 6 times; the other that the Missouri governor had called in the national guard because of overnight violence. I don’t know if the one led to the other but I am not surprised by the reaction. My first reaction when I heard rumors of the 6 bullets a couple of days ago was that it was a cop ticked off that someone would not listen to him. In Missouri’s ghettoized suburbs, apparently that is grounds for the death penalty … with justice delivered by a white cop as the judge jury and executioner.

I understand that the president took a break from his vacation and is back in Washington DC for meetings with advisers and, this morning, Attorney General Holder. I have some advice for them: find the cop and take him into custody. There will not be any peace until people are given some hope that there will be justice. The St. Louis County prosecutor, the guy who said Gov. Nixon acted illegally by sending his SWAT buddies home, empaneling a grand jury is not going to cut it.

Busy day and week. See you all later!

Eating breakfast (apple plus yogurt & granola), drinking tea, lousy night’s sleep, it’s already a thousand degrees out, bla bla bla…..

Wondering how the Missouri governor can be the stupidest person possible in this situation. He has a real talent for picking the worst thing to say or do.

Just saw this over at Daily Banter  can’t get the video to embed:

Why It’s Not Shocking To See This ‘Impeachment Now’ Billboard with Giant Black Testicles

America has collectively gone nuts. Among other things, garment-rending mobs from the far-right to the far-left to all points in between appear to be blaming President Obama for almost literally everything, so given the context it’s really not too shocking to see a brutally racist billboard in Cleveland calling for Obama’s impeachment and featuring a gigantic pair of black, well, nuts.

The billboard’s message is printed in bold, all-caps text reading: “ENOUGH WITH THE LYING,” “IMPEACHMENT NOW” and “YOU’RE OUT OF CONTROL,” with a jet-black caricature of the president. It continues with the text, “DOES ANYONE IN CONGRESS HAVE A SET OF THESE?” And just above the words “TESTICLE FORTITUDE” is a jet-black, weirdly penis-less scrotum labeled “The Big Kahunas,” an obvious reference to Obama’s childhood in Hawaii.

is horrific and I have had emails from people who simply don’t understand the outrage over the execution of Michael Brown. They just don’t.  Am exhausted trying to explain this in a way that works and is not fueled by rage and at the same time lost in admiration of the ways that  JanF and Dee make the case so clearly. If I ever need a lawyer, maybe I will go to them. Dee, you have been working on this for hours every day. If I may give advice, try to take a long nap or a long walk with Chica. You deserve some peace, And, of course, the town of Ferguson and the family need peace and justice.

Hoping for a good calm day for Mooslyvania and the world. Am grateful for the Moose for a sane view of the world.

later. It’s overcast and humid now. Our firewood has just been delivered and stacked by a nice man who lives miles out in the country.

Awful news coming out of Ferguson. Michael Brown was callously murdered. I do hope the Feds won’t let the local police off the hook. Feeling is too high to allow this to be another whitewash. I am heartsick about the pervasive racism in this country.

Notice that people are bleatiing that Obama has no business taking a vacation while this is going on.  What? Funny, never heard any criticism of Dubya with his1,000 days of vacation while in office. Of course, it’s entirely possible that no one missed him.

Had a birthday celebration for Dearly Beloved yesterday evening–just family. It was great, but we were tired when it was over.

Sitting here typing on an iPad while Mr. Baby is asleep in the sling I’m wearing. Miss Pink Cheeks is watching cartoons, which I regret, but I can’t spend much quality time with her while I’m carrying him.

Hope this will be a better day for the world and for Moosylvanians everywhere!

    Morning started hectic and won’t let up.  I just stopped in the middle of what I was doing to check in.  Got QC tonight.  Budget Committee.  Sigh.  Stomach’s already hurting.  I’ll try to check back later.  {{{HUGS}}}

I’m so sleepy this morning. Ryan (our grandson) couldn’t sleep last night so it was an up and down night for me too. He’s asleep now of course and I’m yawning and trying to get myself to the pool.

Some baby boys stay restless Diana, making nap time even more important!

  10. DeniseVelez

I’m really tired – stayed up late trying to watch live feeds from Ferguson

Jan – I won’t be posting TC here today – it’s an orange specific rant ๐Ÿ˜‰

Did put up another open thread on FP.

  11. It lasted until 2am – long enough and with enough intensity to make solid sleep impossible. I hit my snooze button 5 times hoping to delay the day. I could not stop time!! I hope to be able to nap this afternoon but I have so much work that has been kind of set aside because of my distraction over what is going on in Ferguson that I should put in a full day.

Right now it is 66 degrees on its way up to 81. More thunderstorms on tap for tonight.

If I have time, I want to put up a post about Wisconsin’s gubernatorial race.

Have a great day, all y’alls!

  12. Diana in NoVa

Good morning, Meese! Not much happening. Must fill out jury questionnaire today, must pay long-term care insurance premium. Have arranged a play date for Miss Pink Cheeks with a little girl she met at Nature Camp. Hoping the girls can look for raspberries and strawberries and perhaps go apple-knocking with Grandpa.

Today should be a bit easier than yesterday, because Grandpa will be home to help me. Would so love to catch up with the diaries here. Feel that I missing out because I want so badly to read the front page diaries in a companionable atmosphere. As we all know, things get poisonous over at Orange.

Hope everyone will have a good day and catch up on her sleep!

  13. Portlaw

Thanks for the new diary on Ferguson, Dee, and thanks for the comments on it, JanF. It’s a sane, safe place to read about what is happening.

Hope it’s a sane, safe day throughout the land.

Completely, utterly awful night’s “sleep” if you really stretch the definition of the term to include just being in bed. I finally gave up at 4:45 & got up. Only good thing is such an early start got me here early enough to — ta-da: walk before work! 30 minutes, 207 calories. Yay me. (though I worked up rather a sweat, ick)

Drinking tea (no matter how strong, it won’t be enough), eating breakfast. Mind will not shut up. That’s what woke me up & no matter how hard I tried (counting really loud to random numbers over & over till I lost concentration), the part of my mind that wants to tel me stories just won’t shut up. And doesn’t understand it can tell me the stories when I’m asleep. It took me 30 minutes to write this because my mind keeps jabbering at me. Going to pick a nice mellow earworm, like Unforgettable Fire – and it’s really rich with all that orchestral backing, maybe that’ll occupy my jabbering mind.

  15. bfitzinAR

heading for mid-90s.  Last night’s committee meeting could have been worse – and the power-mad trouble-maker (PMTM) Dem actually lost a couple of her solid R votes when she complained about not having some information that was given to us all last week and then said she hadn’t read it because she didn’t realize it was for this meeting.  Just enough of an edge to kill her motion to put a strait jacket on the Department Heads (locking down their line item transfers in the Supply, Maintenance, and Operations budget category – the one category they have any flexibility in spending) for the rest of this year.  Hopefully next year’s Court will be able to restrain her, but I won’t be on it so it won’t be my problem any longer.  Got all kinds of finicky crap to deal with at my “day job” so I’ll get to it.  I don’t know what so say about Ferguson except it’s bad and sad, but I remember Winston Churchill’s comment about violence, “Better jaw, jaw than war, war” (his accent made them rhyme).  Hope everyone has a good Tuesday.  {{{HUGS}}} bf

Keeping a 13 yr old busy and distracted from the lure of electronic devices is an interesting challenge, but we managed better yesterday. Ryan and Ron went for a long walk around the harbor, I hired him to clip the ivy fences and help me trim the ivy growing over a rock wall, and he read a real book in bed last night instead of watching YT videos. So we all slept well, yay!

Today’s adventures will involve kayaks with Ron, and a trip to the bookstore and more ivy pruning with me. A nice mix of work and play.

  17. It is 64 degrees in Madison on its way up to 84. Partly sunny.

Can’t stick around this morning for other than a greeting.

Dee, I hope your words found fertile ground. Even if we can’t all agree on what the perfect response to the situation in Ferguson is, we should be able to agree on what language is unhelpful and avoid using it. I do think that reading some history would be a good start. The anger in Ferguson over the killing of one of their children should not come as a surprise nor should wanting justice be inappropriate. A writer on NPR suggested we re-read James Baldwin. The full quote referred to in that story:

“It began to seem that one would have to hold in the mind forever two ideas which seemed to be in opposition. The first idea was acceptance, the acceptance, totally without rancor, of life as it is, and men as they are: in the light of this idea, it goes without saying that injustice is a commonplace. But this did not mean that one could be complacent, for the second idea was of equal power: that one must never, in one’s own life, accept these injustices as commonplace but must fight them with all one’s strength.”

I don’t want the people of Ferguson to stop fighting. I want them to vote out their clueless mayor and elect people who represent their values and respect their rights.

    See all y’alls later!!

another promise of rain, which will probably fail to materialize. The news is so bad on all fronts that I sorta feel like swimming away myself. The awfulness in Ferguson, the unfortunate reporter murdered by the Islamic militants (who seem to want to return that part of the world to the 7th century), the floods, the drought, the forest fires…it makes one feel so sad and so helpless to alleviate the misery.

Feel as if I’m getting a cold, so must go downstairs, eat breakfast, and take some aspirin. The play date was a great success:  the little girls put on fancy dress right away, which two of them took off before we went outdoors but which Miss Pink Cheeks persisted in wearing. Imagine picking raspberries in a bedraggled Cinderella ball gown! (It’s too short, anyway, now that she’s grown so tall.) Then Grandpa got the rake, the three girls were supplied with baskets, and we all went out to knock down apples from the trees in the front and back yards. They had so much fun!  Mr. Baby slept through the whole thing in a sling on my chest.

Our guests went home and made a beautiful apple cake. The mom sent us a photo of it.

Today will mercifully be shorter as Mommy picks up the children an hour earlier on days she telecommutes. Must try to focus on Friday’s book blog but it’s difficult; also trying to work on a Mabon story.

Hope everyone in Mooseland will stay well and have a good day!

Some silly person is calling all the supervisors’ phones…. they’re rarely even here at 8, much less 7. Anyway, another lousy night’s sleep, though I thin I did sleep some (at least, I was definitely asleep when my alarm went off)

Got a busy Dem club meeting tonight. But it’s also an opportunity to ask for Walk donations.

Sleepy & grumpy (I’d like to have a chance to be a different dwarf).

This is a good thing (bit I have the version Neil read, so I’ll pass):  Neil Gaiman @neilhimself  ยท  21m

The Audible deal of the day is the BBC Neverwhere, with Benedict Cumberbatch. You know you want it. http://www.audible.com/pd/Radi… …

Between the overcast skies and the changing light I can feel a seasonal change this morning. Ava (7 yrs old on Sunday!) will be here today along with Ryan (his voice is changing!) so I may take them shopping for school clothes. They are both counting the days until school starts again, missing their friends and all the organized activities.

  21. It is 67 degrees here with an expected high of 87 degrees. Thunderstorms will be here in about an hour; they look to be a permanent part of the day.

Sounds like things were quieter in Ferguson overnight. From local news reports, I see that Eric Holder met with Capt. Johnson and Michael Brown’s parents as well as community leaders. Pro-Darren Wilson protesters were removed from the area. Sigh. I suspect that they don’t understand that a counter-protest to seeking justice comes across as racist … or maybe they do and don’t care. They will have plenty of time to celebrate; it is unlikely that Officer Wilson will be indicted and even if he is the odds of conviction are tiny. He will probably get another commendation!! But my guess is that the city of Ferguson and their police force will be sued for their post-shooting treatment of Michael Brown and their hamfisted response to the anger of the community. THAT will get their attention because it will cost them money. And money speaks louder than the cries of a community pleading for fair treatment.

Enough! I have a lot to do this morning and will be only sporadically online today.

Please, stay out of trouble!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  22. Portlaw

to 79. Am so happy that, so far, we have missed the dog days.

Think Jan is on target with her scenario of what will happen in Ferguson.

Need some coffee and some news. Will check in later. Hope there will be peace in Moosylvania and justice throughout the land.

  23. Diana in NoVa

It’s just like the nursery rhyme I repeat to Mr. Baby practically every day. Fog is like snow–nice to look at if you don’t have to go out in it.

Another day of bad news. Looks like part of Iceland is about to blow up–not good at all. Daughter-in-law is supposed to attend the Frankfurt Book Fair as part of her job. As she works for a nonprofit, she booked the cheapest possible flight, which naturally was Icelandic Airlines. I loved flying Icelandic Air in the old days, it was so much fun. No threats from Mother Nature in those days, so I extended my stay there.

Making slow progress on tomorrow’s blog. I am wondering what to do with the chicken for tonight and eyeing the apples we’ve knocked down: time for an apple pie? With custard, vanilla ice cream, or clotted cream?

Hope all Moosylvanians will have a good day. It’s hard to be optimistic in the face of all this bad news but we must try. I’m so thrilled about Mo’ne, the pitching phenomenon, in Little League. I love to see girls succeeding.

  24. anotherdemocrat

Woke up at 4:47. Sigh. Got into the parking garage here at 6:15 & walked up & down it twice – 24 minutes worth of walking, including getting over to the building. Sad thing is, it is so muggy even at this hour, that worked up quite a sweat.

Here is the latest update in my friend: “M is out of surgery and in ICU. Please pray for her body to fight against the infection and respond well to the antibiotics.”

may or may not stay at work the whole day, between sleepy & anxious, may not be the best customer service person in the world right now

  25. DeniseVelez

    was up early worrying.

All the “what ifs” running through my head.

What if the DA/Grand Jury does not charge Darren Wilson

(a high possibility – according to lawyers in St. Louis)

What if – he does get charged, goes to trial and is acquitted, or gets convicted of slap on the wrist stuff?

(a very high possibility given the national stats on convictions against white police officers -and vigilante wannabes)

I have to admit – my gut tells me that “justice” for the Brown family, and the Ferguson community isn’t going to come in the state courts.

    Sigh.

    I need more coffee.

  26. princesspat

RonK is taking the grand kids to Mt Baker for a picnic lunch and a hike today so I hope the weather cooperates. Now that all the joint replacement trauma is over it’s so good to see him be able to enjoy walking and hiking again.

I’m still hobbling, but without the boot it’s all relative. No hikes for me but the stairs are no longer such an obstacle.

  27. DeniseVelez

but I am not catching worms

Coffee is made – am on first cup. 67 here – up to 77 and rain.

Woke up to find Lawrence O’Donnell reported:

Ferguson PD didn’t file report after shooting

After a peaceful night in Ferguson, protesters at the courthouse continue to demand that the lead prosecutor in the Michael Brown case step down.

    http://on.msnbc.com/YGCb42

So there was no incident report – to “protect the rights” of the shooter.

  28. It is 72 degrees here in Madison on its way up to 88. Storms tonight. We will have blistering hot weather through next Wednesday. I am hoping it is summers’ last gasp and ushers in the fall. I am ready.

I have not had a chance to read the news yet this morning. I was chuckling last night reading about the Republican in Missouri who apologized for his racist Facebook posts from last year by saying that he was deeply involved in the Republican Party at the time. Wonkette is all over it: Missouri Councilman Apologizes For Racist Facebook Posts, Blames GOP Peer Pressure:

Tinsley apologized and explained that he was under the influence of some pretty weird meds politics at the time:

“I apologize from the bottom of my heart,” Tinsley said.

“At one time, I was a very active republican, very opposed to Obama,” Tinsley said.

He’s had a moment of enlightenment – it never in a million years would have occurred to him that a picture of Obama with a bone through his nose could be interpreted as racist, but now he allows that from certain perspectives, especially the negroidal ones, sure, maybe it could “be taken that way.”

Needless to say, fellow Republicans are not pleased with Tinsley for spilling the beans misrepresenting the values of the Republican Party. Butler County Republicans chair Eddy Justice said that Tinsley crossed a line “when he proceeded to blame the republican party for him thinking like that,” because No True Republican would ever in a million years post that sort of thing, harrumph.

    Harumph, indeed.

    See all y’all later!

  29. Diana in NoVa

I won’t complain about the rain. Saves us from having to water the garden. Speaking of that, hoping Dearly Beloved will clear the pea patch today so Miss Pink Cheeks and I can plant a fall crop of peas.

Jan, like you, I hope this is summer’s last gasp. I am ready for autumn!

Had the night from hell–wonder whether it was the double dose of Zyrtec that kept me awake until 2:30 this morning? I know I’m going to CRASH later today but unfortunately, Mr. Baby doesn’t take to Grandpa as well as he does to me–just yells his little head off–so I’m not sure whether I’ll get a nap or not.

Tomorrow is a meetup day at Union Station with some people from GOS. That’s going to take up pretty much the whole day, as it will take an hour on the Metro from here and back.

Yesterday Miss Pink Cheeks and I made an apple pie with the apples she and her cousin knocked down the day before with Grandpa’s help. It was good! It was a lot of work, though, cutting up those organic apples and discarding the bad bits.

Hope everyone will have a good day and that the news will improve. Can’t get worse, can it? I share the feeling that the killer cop will never be tried and convicted. Would that karma would take care of it.

  30. bfitzinAR

which will put our heat index over 100.  This was a too much crap to do and too many roadblocks to doing it week.  I might, maybe, be able to catch up today.  Last night’s QC ran until 8:30 (at least it didn’t run til 3 am – the City Council did that night before last but finally managed to pass an “equal under the law” ordinance for the LBGT folks) – and while we didn’t exactly pass the early voting sites ordinance (needed 10 votes to do it on one reading), it still got a majority of votes, so we’ve scheduled 2 special meetings back-to-back with already scheduled committee meetings so it doesn’t cost the County extra and as long as the 3 Rs stand firm for democracy we’ll pass it on 3 readings with simple majority votes and have our early voting sites in place for this election.  Sometimes we win.  So seldom it’s more a “sigh” than a “yea” but it’s still a win!  Hope everyone has a good Friday and a great weekend.  {{{HUGS}}} bf

  31. princesspat

The grand kids and Ron had fun hiking yesterday, and I enjoyed my quiet time. School clothes shopping will be today’s activity, as a long Monopoly game took precedent earlier in the week. He goes home tomorrow…it’s been a busy but fun week!

  32. Portlaw

horrific beheading of James Foley, the Russian entry into Ukraine. All very very worrying.

Am abandoning my worries and going to the Mostly Mozart Festival this evening.

Hope the news in your corner of Moosylvania is good.

  33. In Madison today, 73 degrees and fog becoming 85 degrees and storms this afternoon.

Yesterday I was reminded that weighing in on breaking news can be dangerous. I had suggested that the actions of the St. Louis police in a shooting a few days ago was not like the shooting of Michael Brown because the initial reports suggested a long drawn out confrontation with a knife wielding man who appeared to be a danger to those around him. It turns out that the cops jumped out of their cars shooting and the confrontation was over in seconds. It sounds like the culture of the police in the St. Louis area is “shoot when you see the black of their skin”. In my opinion, the Justice Department needs to investigate how police are being trained there and in other parts of the country. The easy path, because it is perfectly legal and very safe, is to shoot and kill any guy with a knife. But lethal force should not be the first option but the last.

In other news, new documents show that Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s campaign directed potential donors to give their money to Wisconsin Club for Growth in 2011 and 2012 so that they could give unrestricted sums of money and remain anonymous. The WCfG coordinated their campaign ads with the Walker campaign during the recalls which is illegal in Wisconsin. A federal judge, without being asked, ruled that our campaign finance law was unconstitutional (free speech!) and threw out the case that the prosecutors were working on. An appeal is pending in the 7th Circuit. Buried in the Friday document dump was a $700,000 donation from a mining company seeking special permits to override local zoning and tribal concerns in northern Wisconsin (they got them from Walker and their purchased legislature). Free speech!!! I recall Anthony Kennedy’s majority opinion in Citizens United saying this: “”We now conclude that independent expenditures, including those made by corporations, do not give rise to corruption or the appearance of corruption.” SCOTUS lives in an ivory tower where no one uses money to buy governments … and racism does not exist. It is the Supreme Court, stupid. And we better do everything in our power to keep the U.S. Senate.

Busy day here, see all y’all later!

  34. DeniseVelez

was up very very late last night tending 3 diaries at once (I am a glutton for punishment)

For those who are feeling a bit down – I think I’ll republish what lifted me up last night (Rev Barber) over here this morning.

  35. Portlaw

The cover of this week’s New Yorker, with its image of Ferguson, is stunning. Not sure of copyright stuff or how to insert an image so will link to it. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/

Worried about what might happen in Syria.

    Hoping for peace on earth.

Will check in later to see the news! As the super in my building says, “Have a happy, nice day.”

  36. Diana in NoVa

day. I like soft, gray, rainy days. Today is getting off to a very slow start. Had a decent night’s sleep, so feeling much better.

The New Yorker cover is awesome, and the Esquire piece resonates. Denise, read your diary about Rev. Barber. Makes me wish I’d been at NN to hear him speak.

Yesterday Miss Pink Cheeks sat at the dining room table doing sums on her math cards and her magic marker. She did simple addition, even getting 9 + 5 right. I’m telling you, the child is brilliant! Perhaps she’ll skip second grade, like my other granddaughter.

It was a difficult day yesterday with Mr. Baby, who was a fussy-gussy. By COB Dearly and I were the walking dead, absolute zombies. We’d planned to do a couple of errands after dinner but felt too worn out.

Going to get my hair done this morning, possibly answer e-mail, then off to the GOS meet-up at Union Station. It’ll be fun to see some faces to go with the names!

Hope all Meese will have a good day!

  37. princesspat

Ryan and I had fun shopping for school clothes yesterday. He has grown taller this summer but remains quite thin so finding jeans to fit was a challenge. Best of all we found him a pair of Star War Vans!

To my relief my foot has healed enough that walking and shopping was much more comfortable and compared to the boot my old Birkenstock sandals seem quite stylish ๐Ÿ™‚
