Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Sunday All Day Check-in for the Herd

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Fierces on the Weather Critter Comment are obligatory welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

On weekends (and holidays), you may find the check-in thread earlier or later than normal because … it is the weekend! Moosies need their beauty rest:

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce … or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

hoping I can get off the puter this afternoon to bar-be-que.

Hope your skies are blue today.

    a clear blue sky overhead!

I love the city on long holiday weekends. Everyone is gone, the streets are empty, the restaurants and movies are not crowded, the parks are calm, everything is quiet!

Going to a fish place today for a big late lunch featuring clams, a traditional food to celebrate the beginning of summer. It’s not quite the same as eating them on the beach but it will certainly do.

But first, a little work. Have two deadlines coming up. I am the world’s leading procrastinator.

Hope it’s a good holiday weekend for all!

  3. Another murderous rampage by a mentally ill guy with a gun? Not so fast, say some people who have been tracking the Men’s Right Movement, which Elliot Rodger was part of:

According to his family, Rodger was seeking psychiatric treatment. But to dismiss this as a case of a lone “madman” would be a mistake.

It not only stigmatizes the mentally ill – who are much more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators of it – but glosses over the role that misogyny and gun culture play (and just how foreseeable violence like this is) in a sexist society. After all, while it is unclear what role Rodger’s reportedly poor mental health played in the alleged crime, the role of misogyny is obvious.

In his final video, Rodger opined:

College is the time when everyone experiences those things such as sex and fun and pleasure, but in those years I’ve had to rot in loneliness, it’s not fair … I don’t know why you girls aren’t attracted to me but I will punish you all for it.

Rodger, like most young American men, was taught that he was entitled to sex and female attention. […]

The language Rodger used in his videos against women – like referring to himself as an “alpha male” – is common rhetoric in [Men’s Rights] circles.

These communities are so virulently misogynist that the Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization that tracks hate groups, has been watching their movements for years. Yet, as the artist Molly Crabapple pointed out on Twitter:  “White terrorism is always blamed on guns, mental health – never poisonous ideology.”

Poisonous ideology. Not just misogyny but white supremacy and the I’ve-got-mine-screw-you rhetoric of the libertarians. Sadly, these sorts of people are finding others like them and who give them attaboys for their venomous outpourings.

we got a little yesterday, not much

Eating breakfast, watching Up. They’re pretty much doing a regular show — did have a short segment on the shootings, but not much. I think it’s good, though I think a segment on the poisonous MRA ideology would be good.

I definitely have enough breakfast & lunch for next week. Might cook a dinner, might just buy frozen food.

    now, time for tea

Perfect weather for the Sea To Ski race…..and for us to stay home. The race ends in Fairhaven and soon even our neighborhood parking will be taken.

Yesterday evening was so plesant. I was working in the front garden and with the view of the bay, the breeze, the neighbors walking by, and the pretty plants I was muddy but happy.

I’ll be glad when our company arrives today so we can take a rest from getting ready!

sailing across a blue spring sky. A “summer blue” sky is often tinged with a metallic gray-violet that presages thunderstorms, but today’s blue is as innocent as a baby’s smile.

We have to clean up the patio today. Don’t wanna! We just watched the Formula I race during which, to my great relief, my man Lewis Hamilton fended off Daniel Ricciardo for second place. That took hours because we watched the hype before and after.

So now I need to do laundry and catch up on writing. MUST, must write today, even if it’s only one line!

Hope everyone has an enjoyable holiday!
