Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Thursday Morning Herd Check-in

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary

Fierces on the Weather Critter Comment are obligatory welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, … or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

32 here in the NY mountains.

Jan – I have a Wisconsin question for you.

Am researching for Sunday piece on those who voted against MLK Jr. holiday – a very prominent “nay” voter was Jim Sensenbrenner (R) WI. (along with two others at the time)

    88 Nay WI-06 Petri, Thomas (R)

    89 Nay WI-08 Roth, Toby (R)

Looking up Sensenbrenner in wiki I see he recently had a hissy fit re Mandela:

Following the death of Nelson Mandela, on December 6, 2013, Sensenbrenner spoke to a group of supporters at a Brookfield restaurant and objected to the executive proclamation by President Barack Obama to lower the flags to half-staff to honor Mandela. He stated it was his belief that the American flag should only be flown at half-staff for Americans.

What’s up with this dude (and the people who vote for his bigotry)? (not familiar with the political geography of WI)

stuff, since Jersey is our neighbor state – and Krispy is a supposed front runner for the POTUS primary race, I don’t ignore it all.  That said, I had to laugh, as a Springsteen fan, when I saw this over at orange.  I’m rarely awake late nights and don’t watch late night tv, so I miss  a lot of things unless someone blogs about them

heh.  Go get him Boss! 😉

  3. Obama To Address Expanding College Access

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are expected to deliver remarks Thursday on expanding college opportunity, the White House said.

The President and First Lady will be accompanied by college and university presidents from across the country, in addition to other nonprofit groups, at the event. They are scheduled to speak at 11:20 a.m. in a White House auditorium.

I believe that he is setting the stage for some of the themes he will hit in his State of the Union Address on January 28th. That speech will be his main political speech setting the tone for 2014. The 114th Congress is the last chance we have to give President Obama majorities to advance his, and our, agenda.

Eating breakfast (mmmm, kale) & drinking tea. It’s not that cold – 40s. But, y’all know how I’ve talked about how crazy high the cedar pollen has been – 16,000 when 7k is considered “very high”. Yesterday the damn things put out 21,000 grains per cubic whatever. By far the highest count ever. If I was ever queen of the world for a day, on my top ten list is to kill all cedar trees. A combination of zyrtec & herbal stuff is keeping me functional.

Today: my workout group meets at 6:30 but I didn’t bring my gym bag. So, I’m just gonna go home after work.

but I’m so pissed at the Powers That Be, who seem to have nothing to do but think up stupid time-wasting shit for us to do instead of our actual work, that I’m having trouble being polite to anybody for any reason.  I’m having to create forms for professors who did work for the University outside their regular contracts – including teaching summer school – and notarize the signatures for information a simple query to the payroll database would give them.  So we are talking 100s of staff people taking hours of time to harass more hundreds of professors (figure a minimum of 10 faculty per staff person) for information that a Payroll support person could generate in less than an hour.  And these effers will whine, snot, and moan about tuition and tax dollar and how we would save so much money if we’d just privatize!  So I’ll get to it and check back when I can – maybe I’ll be in a better mood by then.  Maybe.  Y’all have a good day.

RonK will have his right hip replacement surgery on Monday, so we need to do a few thing in preparation. The Lions Club has a good selection of shower chairs, walkers, etc for people to just use and return. He’ll need a riser cushion for the sofa which a friend ( both hips replaced) will lend us. He may not need a main floor bed, but I’ll make space just in case.

He has been doing the grocery shopping though so I need to write a long list for a shop ahead trip. Getting older is more of a challenge than we thought it would be!
