The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.”

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else”

    It is time for Congress to set aside political gamesmanship and get back to the work of the people.

    An immigration bill passed the Senate with bipartisan support and was sent to the House. The House, if I recall correctly, said “No way in hell … we hate the Senate bill and will have Jim DeMint give us the text of a new one craft our own.”

    So now we will hear the screams from the nativist wing of the Republican party, further enhancing the party’s image as racist dead-enders, putting all their eggs in the voter-suppression basket as the demographic tide sweeps them into the dustbin of history (metaphor overload!!!).

    If I have time, I will hunt down the video and transcript later this morning.

    It’s a rather brisk morning out there, in the 30’s, brr! But the old folks have me sweating inside. I’m about to open a window.

    was up at about 3AM…had to finish a piece for the Blogathon for Food Justice over at orange post-time 11AM Pacific, 2pm Eastern.

    Plus scribbling away to finish for Sunday deadline, and still have a slew of papers to grade, as well as putting final touches on a power point for class tomorrow – lecturing on Women in Politics.

    Phew.  

    Plus had to put together an FAQ for students for upcoming elections – they have zero clue about who will be running for midterm elections in ’14, and what ballot initiatives are up for a vote next month.  

    The SUNY New Paltz campus falls into Chris Gibson’s House District 19 – he’s one of two R’s from our area who voted to end the shutdown. That does not make him a liberal by any means – but he does take non-tea party stances from time to time.

    He may get toppled in the next election since his new opponent, Sean Eldridge, is the husband Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes.

    Eldridge has already started campaigning:

    Though a big NY Times piece presented him as a sort of carpetbagger, he has a real shot at winning.

    R’s are worried.

    Lefty blogs have pointed out that Eldridge’s ad makes no mention of him being gay.

    Frankly I don’t care. My campus has 6,194 full time students enrolled, most of whom are D’s. Eldridge will help pull out the student vote.

    Still cool in the morning, though I didn’t wear a sweater & I did wear sandals (it’s gonna be 80 this afternoon – sunny & gorgeous). Eating breakfast & drinking tea. Washed my hair around the bandaid. The spot probably got wet anyway, but it doesn’t hurt. A couple of the other spots, the ones she just froze off rather than scraping, objected when I washed my face last night, but now I couldn’t even tell you where they were. The scraped place, well, I definitely know where it is, but it doesn’t hurt.

    Didn’t even bring my gym bag today. But my triathlon group is going to have a weight loss challenge in a couple of weeks, that’ll get me really going. So I’m giving myself a break for now.

    Earworm is still Yahweh. I’ll put the new Tired Pony cd in on the way home, maybe they can dislodge it. Not that I mind listening to U2 or even this one song – Edge’s guitar work on this is really pretty.

    Sunny and mid-50s Here Near DC for the next 3 or 4 days. Perfect weather. Temp is usually a little warmer than forecast in my neck of the woods. Even more perfect.

    Today I tackle Wallyworld because they sell a couple of things I can’t get as cheaply anywhere else. I’ve wasted spent a little extra money the last few weeks buying snacks & coffee while I’m out so I’m trying to cut back a little.

    a high of 53 F. today.  Today is a “skinny day,” so had only an orange for breakfast.

    Grandpa will take Miss Preschooler to her tennis lesson this afternoon. She’s hopeless at it, but her parents keep trying.  Speaking of parents, Daddy has just been offered a new job, which makes him very happy, and Mummy is having an ultrasound this afternoon.  We hope for good news.

    Have to check with HQ to see whether they need me to drive voters to the polls for Early Voting this afternoon. Things are heating up–only 12 days to go before the election!

    Am mourning the bush fires in my beloved New South Wales. Sydney is my favorite city on Earth, so the thought of the heat and the fires on its borders makes me really sad. It’s weird how the announcers on CNN can’t seem to cope with the concept of “bush fires”–they keep calling them “brush fires.” Can only suppose no one is taught to read by phonics nowadays.

    Today would have been my mother’s 93rd birthday. Nephew’s birthday is tomorrow, brother-in-law’s birthday on Saturday, grandson’s birthday on Sunday. October is a busy month in our family!

    Weather here continues to cool. The rainy season is just around the corner. I’m prepared to cope with that, though I must confess that I’m already yearning for spring.

    highs in the 50s and lows potentially in the upper 20s!  Still CAVU the rest of the week but some potential for rain early next week.  No QC meetings until Tuesday which is just fine by me. Glad we’re almost to the time change as I’m looking forward to daylight when I go to work – but if they’d just pick one and stick to it, no changing twice a year to mess with everybody’s heads and health, I wouldn’t complain (much) even if they stuck with daylight shifting time.  {{{HUGS}}}

    I don’t remember an October as foggy as this one has been….going to be a long rainy season this year.

    The irony of McMorris Rodgers’ role as Obamacare national demonizer-in-chief is that the Affordable Care Act is working in her home state. Washington chose to embrace the Affordable Care Act, tailor its own website to the local insurance market, and brought in smart people from the tech industry. Since the Oct. 1, launch, more than 100,000 people have enrolled or completed health insurance applications via the state’s wahealthplanfinder.org website.

    How I hope the “Shutdown Cathy” moniker sticks!

    After buying a designer belt at the flaship Barneys department store in New York, Trayon Christian was detained and then arrested by undercover cops who the teen says told him the card had to be fraudulent because he couldn’t have afforded the Ferragamo accessory.
