Sunday All Day Check-in for the Herd

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Fierces on the Weather Critter Comment are obligatory welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

On weekends (and holidays), you may find the check-in thread earlier or later than normal because … it is the weekend! Moosies need their beauty rest:

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

  1. President Obama weighs in

Obama, in an interview with The Associated Press, said team names like the Redskins offend “a sizable group of people.” He said that while fans get attached to the nicknames, nostalgia may not be a good enough reason to keep them in place.

“I don’t know whether our attachment to a particular name should override the real legitimate concerns that people have about these things,” he said in the interview, which was conducted Friday.

The article points out “This isn’t and never has been about ‘honoring’ Native Americans with symbols of ‘strength, courage, pride, and respect.’ It’s about attachment to a name that has significant football-related history behind it, and, as Obama noted, whether that should take precedent over people who see it is as offensive.”

This may be a way to undercut the claims that it is not offensive to whichever tribal spokesman the Washington NFL team owners place in front of a microphone to bolster their case. There are just as many, if not more, who can be placed in front of a microphone saying that it is offensive. Admit that it is related to the nostalgia, change the name and then find a way to deal with people’s grief over losing that connection to their sports past.

55 degrees this morning — brrrrrrr!!!!! I have a long-sleeved dress picked out for church, may add a sweater. And I’ll definitely need closed-toe shoes.

Eating breakfast & watching Up. Today’s agenda:  church, cooking…. and that’s pretty much it.

  3. Diana in NoVa

as they say in British bingo.

Wish I were with you in the Hudson Valley, Denise.  I can’t wait for the rain that’s coming tomorrow.  We’re already three inches under for the year here in Northern Virginia.

Feeling slightly encouraged this morning because I think the beginning of my next short story is about to materialize into solid form from the whirling cloud of research I’ve been doing. That always helps!  Once I’ve nailed that I won’t have much trouble until Scene 4, when I have to write about a subject of which I am abysmally ignorant. 😉

Elder Son is taking his wife to the train station as I write.  She’s going up to New York to look after her father, who had a hip replacement on Tuesday. He and his wife are such sweeties–can’t wait to see them again! They’re coming to us for Thanksgiving.

This afternoon Elder Son is coming over for a grill-out. Younger Son used to be a chef, so I won’t have to do any cooking at all.  I can help in other ways. Dearly Beloved has banned dessert in this house until he loses a few pounds (with his metabolism, that’ll take about 5 days), so I don’t have to do anything for dessert either.  I may put a box of chocolates on the table after dinner.  Then again, I may just let it go. 🙂

Hope everyone will have a good day and a good week!  Surely the news can’t get much worse than it already is.

Maggie’s family comes home today…..I’m going to miss the little stinker! She’s kept me safe from the train whistles all week and taught me to fetch the tennis ball from under the sofa 🙂
