In 1778, the Continental Congress passed the first Federal budget without holding the debt. ceiling hostage.

In 1881, President Garfield died of his wounds (and with help from his doctors) after having been shot back on July 2nd.

In 1934, police arrested Bruno Hauptmann in the kidnaping and murder of the Lindbergh baby.

In 1946, the first Cannes Film Festival was held.

In 1952, Charlie Chaplin was forbidden re-entry into the United States when the Attorney General revoked his permit. He would have to undergo an interview prior to re-entry to determine both his political views (lefty) and his moral fiber.

In 1959, Russian Premier Nikita Kruschev was forbidden to visit Disneyland, ostensibly due to security issues.

In 1981, Simon and Garfunkle got back together for a fee concert in Central Park, NYC.

In 1985, the Congressional Hearings on obscenity in rock music began (thanks, Tipper!), with testimony from Frank Zappa, Dee Snider, John Denver, and others. Happily for many obscure bands who were cited as examples on the PRMC side, their sales took off and they made a bit of money and some new fans.

In 2010, the leaking well in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill was finally sealed (though one hears it is still leaking).

    National Talk Like a Pirate Day is being larrrrrrrgely ignored by me today. Last year all the hovers were pirate related.

    I do not know any card tricks. Zip. Nada. I can shuffle cards quite well, though I haven’t tried since my torn ligament. I don’t do tricks, I’m not that kind of girl!

    I swing chickens when needed.

    I used to record my dreams, and found the more I did so, the more easily I remembered them. A psychologist friend told me the prevailing theory on dreams was that it was your brain getting rid of shit it no longer needs, so if that is the case, maybe I shouldn’t have done it. I don’t believe in any sort of universal interpretation. There is no way that an action in the dream of suburban American would mean the same thing if dreamed by someone in rural China.

    I still remember a couple of dreams, mostly ones I wrote down a long time ago, or that had peculiar circumstances, like a famous guest star, or a bloody murder, or the one where the entire dream was black and white except the color red (and that was way before Schindler’s list came out). I have never had a recurring dream.

    I go to church, but I don’t really do stuff on my own. I’m more of an “in my head” kind of religious person.

    I have tried in the past, but I just don’t remember dreams.

    Talk like a pirate day?  No!  (Arrrrgh.)

    I know one card trick that’s not really that impressive.  You need an accomplice.  You deal out nine cards in a 3×3 grid and send your accomplice out of the room.  Somebody picks a card, and the accomplice comes back, and you point to various cards and ask the accomplice, “Is this the card?”  The accomplice always gets it right.  The people watching never seem to get how the info is conveyed.

    I don’t pray voluntarily, but perceived life-and-death situations might bring it out.  Foxhole syndrome.

    I do love to remember dreams and try to figure out what they mean.  Usually, dreams about floods or plumbing leaks are just trying to tell me I need to wake up and use the bathroom.  😉  I used to have some kind of dream interpretation book, but I don’t know that it wasn’t total bull.  A recurring dream from my childhood was that I was walking along the road with my parents and my sister, and I couldn’t keep up.  They were preoccupied and didn’t notice me falling behind.  Meanwhile, a jet plane was about to crash into me.

    By the way, I have fallen and hit the ground in a dream, and I am still alive.  So you can cross that one off your list of myths.

    Pirate:  decidedly no but my daughter might.

    Cards:  I can shuffle.  I can do a few tricks, nothing special

    Pray:  nope, sometime I hope things happen but no praying.

    Dreams:  no, I did hear a story on NPR a few weeks ago about lucid dreaming and thought it would be neat.  Unsure if I am willing to put in the effort.  So far, I don’t have to think about sleep and I want to keep it that way for as long as possible.

    Have enjoyed NTLaPDay in the past but have not celebrated. This year I plan to say Arrr! every chance I get, for the pure pleasure of it.

    No on the card tricks but I’m a good shuffler.

    My prayer and medication meditation have been sorely lacking in recent years. Would like to be a Gnostic but their tenets and liturgy are half sublime and half weird, so dropped it.

    I have whole worlds I live in when I’m asleep.

    I don’t know any tricks, but I can do a complex cut of the cards with one hand (I have big hands; 5’8″ but my fingers are like those of a big person). I shuffle pretty well, I guess.

    I only remember my dreams when they wake me up; those are almost all nightmares.  

    I remember one recurring nightmare from when I was a teen…. I was in a car on a winding cliffside road and it got buried in an avalanche.

    I saw that Eric Cantor was going to cancel next week’s House recess and I am torn. When they are out of town, nothing gets passed that will wreck our country. But when they are in town, nothing gets passed that will help our country.

    Will you be celebrating National Talk Like a Pirate Day today?  Nope.  But it is my Aunt’s birthday, so I sent her an email to celebrate that.

    Know any card tricks? Can you shuffle cards very well? Can you perform any other type of tricks?  I used to know card tricks; there was one that was awesome because it was mathematically based, so you could repeat it often and people had trouble figuring out how you got it to work.  I’m decent with shuffling.

    Do you pray? Meditation? Chant? Swing chickens?  Not really.  I mull things over in my head, and send thoughts out into the ether at people, but I dunno what you’d call that.

    Do you make any attempt to remember/record your dreams? If so, do you try to interpret them?  Nope.  

    Do you remember any dreams from long ago? Have you ever had a recurring dream?   I can remember pieces of dreams from long ago, and I know I had a recurring dream as a kid (it involved being in a car driving along a road or bridge with swamp/marsh on either side, but I’d be hard pressed to give more details.
