Tuesday Morning Herd Check-in: Greetings of the Moosekin

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Fierces on the Weather Critter Comment are obligatory welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

Let the greetings begin!

Temps at the moment 57 with high of 76. Rest of the week mostly the same. For the first time in weeks, I don’t have any clients scheduled and no reports to get done. There is a court appearance scheduled next Friday, but I won’t be a bit surprised if the case is continued….again.

My youngest is an animal person and has been following the critters and doctors on the “Vet Clinic Gambia’s” two YouTube channels. She has asked me several times if I will approve of her going to The Gambia and helping them out. The Touray & Meyer Veterinary Clinic  in The Gambia treat stray animals brought in by local citizens, and depend on donations to help defray costs. They see some pretty bad stuff and treat it. One of the common problems of animals in The Gambia are Mangoworms. They are the larvae of a local fly which lays its eggs in the dirt, then any passing animal that touches the egg picks it up, the egg hatches, and the larva burrows into the skin. The larvae are extracted by squeezing them out, like popping a zit. If the worm dies inside the skin, it can create a life threatening abscess for the poor animal. Quite a cast of characters at the clinic. Fatou, the vet assistant, is wonderful. Dr. Michael “Micha” Meyer is originally from Germany, and has a wicked sense of humor. He is the one who does most of the videos.

When viewers of the videos complain about them not using gloves for some of their procedures, Dr. Meyer always tells them to send money so they can buy some. Some viewers complain about them “being mean” to the animals, and they have very nearly lost their YouTube account several times, which would be unfortunate, because it is a source of donations so they can continue to treat, neuter and spay these homeless animals. For all the pootie people, here is Max, a kitten brought in by someone to be checked out. Max has trouble walking, and may starve to death if left untreated. Dr. Meyer finds his problem.

They don’t actually have anything to do with mangoes, but somehow got the name and it stuck. It is the maggot of the Tumbu fly. Some folks complain about not using sedation when they extract the worms. If it is a small infestation, sedation is not necessary because it is over with quickly. For severe infestations (myiaisis), sedation is often necessary. Drs. Touray and Meyer explain at the link:

It’s going to be a beautiful day for us, but not for those poor souls who died yesterday in the mass shooting at the Navy Yard, or for the families who are mourning them today.  This country is insane. Why can’t people see that mass gun ownership is fatal?  Or at least, our attitude about it is fatal.  I understand that Michael Moore was shocked to learn that Canadians possess as many guns as do Americans, but they mostly don’t use them to murder people.

On a happier note, I’m meeting JG in MD for lunch today!

We got rain last night! Like, really. Maybe 1/2 inch. It was fantastic — I put my basil & a couple of the mints out to get some. Still in the 90s, so it’ll feel like a steam bath, but there are 10-20% chances of rain all week.

Church class tonight. The book is Jesus Freak: Feeding Healing Raising the Dead and boy is it trouble. This woman takes all that stuff that Jesus actually said (not the stuff fundies wish he did) about feeding people & all that really seriously. Like, seriously. She helps put on a foodbank in the sanctuary of her Episcopal church every Friday, where they give away food to anyone who comes. They don’t have to show proof they deserve it, they can just come & be fed. And it has evolved to be run by the very crazy homeless people it serves. I’m about 1/2 way through and it is really good. And could be a lot of trouble, in a good way. My church already has a thing where we feed 300-400 every Saturday, so it isn’t that, it’s the mentality of “just go do it” that makes me smile & wonder what will come of it.

    Anyway, that’s me today.

    and “they” say we may get some more today.  Meanwhile the temps are heading back up from the lovely 70s they’ve been in the last few days.  {{{HUGS}}}

It’s a housekeeping day for me. I need to find a replacement for the 1920’s bathtub faucet because the old American Standard handles are finally just worn out. A connection in the gas bbque has broken and we can’t fix it so a repairman is coming. And thanks to coumadin and a simple scratch I didn’t see I’m re washing the clean bedding……grrrrr!
