Happy 5th Birthday, Motley Moose and Meeses!!

The Moose was born on Wednesday, September 10, 2008.

Motley Moose is a community blog focused primarily on American Politics. The site was a joint effort by twenty-five active political bloggers (a healthy mix of long-time Obama supporters, ‘Clintonistas’, centrists, libertarians, and non-partisan moderates) who had become tired of the trolling and flame wars found on many political sites. The idea was to build a post-partisan site that could move forward instead of looking back. The Motley Moose springs from the rich history of Progressive Blogs including MyDD (aka “The Blogfather”) and  DailyKos.

The Moose has grown far beyond those original 25 bloggers by becoming a ‘home base’ for many long-time as well as new political bloggers.  In separating ourselves from the political blog herd, we set out to build a new place to gather that had clear lines of moderation, fostered a strong community, promoted reasoned discourse and well-researched diaries, and included a healthy dose of snark and dry wit.  While we trend to the Left, we are focused on political pragmatism because we believe that without a dialogue from across the political spectrum, we’ll never be able to move forward, beyond partisanship and rhetoric, and make progress on the challenges we face.  We have built a strong community on which the success of the blog rests, and we believe that one blog and one blogger can make a difference in the world.

We wholeheartedly believe that there can be progress through politics.  We invite you to join the discussion!

Motley: Having elements of great variety or incongruity.

Moose: A reference to the Bull Moose Party (the first Progressive Party) and a nod to our Progressive beliefs.

    It is 68 degrees in Madison WI on its way up to 86 degrees (a palindromic temperature moment). Rain expected this morning then a steamy afternoon. After the front moves through it will cool us down.

    Sorry to miss the bat signal, iriti!! I was distracted by Things on the Internet.

    It is suppose to get into the low 90’s before the day is over. Fed Bullwinkle breakfast and I’m combing his fur, which is coming out in clumps. Poor cat!

    Been battling a cold since Sunday, think I might be about to win.

    Made some good progress on the short story last night.  Did not watch the speech from the East Room.  I don’t think the opposition against a strike is really going to sway the Powers, but I still hope for a solution that doesn’t involve war.

    Must do two things today–get to the gym and start cleaning out closets. Younger son and his family are moving in with us on Saturday.

    Foggy here but it’s not thick, and we’ve been enjoying sunny afternoons so there’s hope for today. I have some important errands to run in the neighborhood and then I hope to get in a nice walk in the park.

    One of my errands is to stop by the gym I joined last week but haven’t worked out at yet, to ask if someone there can help me set up a low-impact exercise regime because I’m pretty clueless on my own.

    Sad news from the neighborhood: the greengrocer down the block has closed after 30+ years in business. This means having to walk a good deal further for fresh produce and the organic whole-milk yogurt I love. I swear if a hair or nail salon goes into that space I’ll burn it down. We have a glut of such establishments in the ‘hood already!

    Eating breakfast, drinking tea. Really, seriously, I’ve got to make my brain shut up at night. Why it wants me awake at 4am is just a mystery.

    Anyway, very few thoughts in my head. At least there are no 100+ temps in the forecast, just mid-90s. Earworm: Called Out In The Dark by Snow Patrol.

    64 here at the moment, supposed to get up to 84 later. Overcast and elevated humidity here in the mountains.

    Just finished the second cup of Cajun coffee, and will be heading off to the salt mine in a few minutes. Speaking of Cajuns and salt mines, I have been keeping an eye on the Bayou Corne disaster unfolding in Assumption Parish, LA. The hole has eaten more trees and part of a work platform. No one knows for sure how deep it is. The salt deposit under the parish is roughly the size of Mt. Everest, and now water is in it because the sidewall of the salt dome collapsed.

    Assumption Parish has their own YouTube channel, where there is a great visual record going back to the beginning of the salt dome collapse. An epic environmental disaster unfolding yet many environmental activists have never heard of it.

    Hot one more day here but storms possible later and cooler and drier here through the weekend.  Tomorrow is my ten year anniversary and we are headed downtown for the night!  Adult night!  I am most excited.

    Glad to have something to celebrate today – since 9/11 always leaves me very depressed remembering working with Peter/ plf515 at the WTC and the day it all ended.

    I joined Moose about a month after it got started, elated to leave MyDD behind and have been here ever since.

    Temps here are going up to 93 so at least I won’t be cold.

    Looks like De Blasio has it in NYC – no matter if there will be a run-off – he’ll win that (if it happens) and the Mayoral election.

    Another thing to celebrate today.

    You have the wrong diagnosis, they won’t give it for stenosis.

    Yes, I knew about that, I have the wrong diagnosis, and it’s expensive, so they won’t give it to people like me. We’re going to need to fight this.

    They say you need to take Neurontin.

    I know. The doctor and I agreed I couldn’t take Neurontin.

    Oh…

    It went on like that, I interrupted her every time she started to repeat what I already knew. I couldn’t bear to hear her say all these things that proved the doctor is incompetent. I did, however, point out that I was in pain.

    She asked if I had seen a neurologist. I said no, but I saw an orthopedist. She said she’d talk to the doctor. This, of course, will do no good.

    Today I will order the drug from Canada.

    The cost for 90 pills of Lyrica is $182.00. If I paid for them myself in the US the cost would be vastly more.

    The insurance isn’t worth the fight. My credit card isn’t quite maxed out yet. I’m off to push the button.

    yesterday.  I still can’t write specifically about it on a work computer, but I promise you I needed it to get through the day and totally appreciate it.  Compared to what happened at work, the dreaded QC Finance Committee meeting went fairly smoothly.  Hopefully today will be calmer (as it is also cooler – back into the 80s/50s range by the end of the week).  Happy Birthday to MM – a calm space is a good thing.  {{{HUGS}}} bf

    It’s 55° and foggy in Bellingham this morning. Now that school has started we will care for our 6 yr old grand girl on Wednesday afternoons but her older sister is in middle school now and has a different schedule. She sends texts while riding the bus…..growing up ::sniff, sniff::

    Orange has always been my soda but I swore off the internet  dispenser about five weeks ago. Fortunately bread crumbs dropped by an old respected name (Brit) and a new one (Shaun Appleby) led me here.

    A bit of skimming here has uncovered many old respected names already. I look forward to re-meeting these folks on new discussion forum home, as I wean myself from orange’s ever-lowering common denominator. I guess big organizations just can’t stop themselves from cutting quality. Just look at Coke II. I blame myself for being surprised.
