Saturday All Day Check-in for the Herd: Greetings of the Moosekin

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Fierces on the Weather Critter Comment are obligatory welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

On weekends (and holidays), you may find the check-in thread earlier or later than normal because … it is the weekend! Moosies need their beauty rest:

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

Let the greetings begin!

Yesterday was a wildly fun afternoon with my friend Kim. First a delectable cheeseburger, diner style, with onion rings. Then we went and sat in the sun for awhile (that part of town was drenched in sunshine, while my neighborhood was just drenched) and we finished the afternoon with some potent cocktails. I staggered into a cab and came home, a bit unsteady but very happy.

I think it’s still foggy outside right now but it’s too dark to see much.

    Wishing everyone a nice weekend!

I might be a bit bitchy or whiny today. I don’t have a doctor, I have a computer user like the rest of us. I’ll spare you the details, but it’s pretty disheartening.

Today my to-do list includes looking up scary heart-related terms from the upper right corner of my EEG printout.

  3. How Many Cups Of Coffee Per Day Is Too Many?

A published this week in Mayo Clinic Proceedings suggests that when it comes to coffee, too much appears to be more than 28 cups per week, at least if you are under 55.

The researchers found that younger men who passed the 28 cup weekly threshold – which works out to about 4 cups per day – had a 56 percent increased risk of death from all causes. Younger women who were heavy coffee drinkers had a greater than two-fold increased mortality risk.

According to the researchers, people over 55 did not have the same risk.

As this was startling to the millions who thrive on coffee and belied the other studies we had seen that coffee (in moderation) is good for us, the NPR author dug deeper. Turns out that “heavy coffee drinkers in the study were more likely to be smokers”, which would add significantly to the risk. Well, duh.

On that note, even though I am over 55 and did not have to be concerned even if the study had not been suspect, I will go crank up my second pot of coffee.

Just saw a couple of things close to my heart to comment on, but have a lot of stuff to do. We are having company later and I need to so a few chores.

Right now, it is 64 degrees in the Otteray, with a forecast high of 74 and chance of rain showers. I tried to check out the Grandfather Mountain Cam and it is down. I may call the Echota Lodge manager to see if it is down permanently or if they are just having technical issues.

Gorgeous day today, and we have already been out and about. I’ve put a little time in on my envelope piecework job, Rich has put down fresh grass seed on the big bare spot in the back yard, and he picked a bagful of Anaheims and serranos.

Oh, and he picked some sage and put that into the dehydrator. I need to pick up some liquid pectin to make my jellies. We’ll probably do that today (store was out, so have to go someplace else), and then I’m a-jellying tomorrow. Lemon-rosemary, hot pepper, and mint are on the agenda.

There’s nothing scary in my EEG, at least not based on the remarks on the page. I still get out of breath, but I can worry about that after I see the cardiologist.

I have three 25mg Lyrica pills. A special authorization is needed because it’s very expensive, and pharmacist & doctor can’t arrange that until Monday. Pharmacist Stephanie made a call and got an emergency prescription. The three pills cost $5.00.

I can use them to see if Lyrica will work. I’m wondering if the experiment will involve taking more than one pill, but right now I’m giving the first pill an hour to relieve the pain. One step at a time.
