Tuesday Morning Herd Check-in: Greetings of the Moosekin

Make sure you let your peeps know where to find you!

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least content.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

Let the greetings begin!

46 degrees with an expected high of 61. Tomorrow spring will be returning to the Mitten! By this weekend, it will be summer.

I’m making chips and cheese for dinner(third shifter here) tonight. It smells so good. Abernathy has already begun anticipating his share.

26 days left for our western trek to begin.

  2. For hours. blech…

    But hey! We’re up!!

I guess we have too many things to think about to just roll over and go back to sleep. So coffee is brewing and Jim’s trying to poke a splinter out of his finger.

Robins are singing their non-melodious song as the sky brightens in the east. It’s about 57 out, heading to 91, according to Mr Hourly. Then he expects highs of about 80 through the rest of the week.

Cleaning and moving stuff around today. And I might get out to buy 2 new pillows, but who knows. I’m pretty sure a nap this afternoon will take higher priority.

  3. Today is lawn mowing day. Lucky me, it is supposed to reach 90˚. Monday, I stacked rocks, removed dead branches from in back, planted flowers for the front planters, and put the basil in the garden.

Two blue jays just dive bombed a squirrel.

I am headed out to work in a few. Today we evaluate all our MA and PhD students. Once I finish grading papers I am done for the year. WOOT!!

  5. Low 70s today and high 80s tomorrow. Feeling a touch better today but still no energy. Been working on art. Did a couple of pictures yesterday. I got some new horse models so had to try them out although I think the little fellow may have bit off more than he can chew in Wanna Race? I’m working on a new short story with my second Dragon King’s Daughter and she and one of her dragons show why it isn’t a good idea to mess with her in The Spell.

    going up to 61,

I have laser surgery scheduled this morning for my glaucoma.

Am thankful for the wonders of modern medical technology.

3 months ago it would have felt warm.  Today it feels bone-chilling cold.

At the mechanic now.  It’s time for the 6-month maintenance on my car.  If not for that I’d still be sound asleep.

I’m freezing. The thermostat says it’s 58° inside and NOAA says it’s – OMG – 39° outside. But coffee is warming my insides and my disposition. ::slurrpp::

a pale blue sky veiled by milky white clouds.

So cold this morning I got up and made banana bran muffins with walnuts, because I had two bananas that were past their best. Noticing that I was out of wheat bran, I substituted oat bran–makes a gloppier mixture, but the taste is basically the same.  The muffins are great with butter and marmalade!

It’s supposedly going to be 65 F. tonight, so I’ll make beef stew, even if it is May. The spinach, which delights in cold weather, is jumping up for joy in the grow-box on the back porch–the Boston Bibb lettuces are nestling cozily on the other side, hugging their outer leaves close.  Has anyone here tried what I’m trying–you buy these hydroponic lettuces at the supermarket and after you finish using the leaves, you calmly plant the roots outside?  If it works, what a cheap way to ensure a supply of inexpensive lettuce! Until the daily outside temp rises to 90 F., that is.

Now off to read Jim in IA’s diary on the front page.  Everyone have a good day!

Did y’all see Commander Hadfield & Wil Wheaton on Rachel Maddow’s show? Well, not directly, but she had them both in a “moment of Geek” segment. Oh, and Wil wrote this about Nathan Fillion

Eating the savory sweet potato dish. Still deciding if I like it.

My schedule from my tri group says today is a bike workout. Since we might get rain, I’ll plan on biking at the gym. Tomorrow is a group workout — swimming & a tire changing clinic. But it is even more likely to rain. So, we’ll see.

    Happy Tuesday!

seems unable to decide whether it is spring or summer.  Up around 90 for the next couple of days, then comes the stormy weather knocking us back into the 70s.  Back into the upper 80s for week-end and through next week.

I’m not sure where this came from originally. I found it on Facebook, posted by Sir Thomas, Knight of the Kind Thoughts Thinking Circle (aka T.). But anyway, awwwww 8-]

with signs that the orchardists are gearing up for the cherry harvest, about which we (and the nearby wheat ranchers) are a bit nervous as it has been a particularly dry winter and spring.  We’ve been getting ominous warnings about the potential for a worse than usual fire season in Oregon this year, and the sequester means fewer firefighters and tools with which to manage that situation.  Our neighbors in Southern Oregon are using the “d” word, as in “drought,” but it’s not reached that level yet where I hang my biretta.

I have to be out the door in fifteen minutes, but I’ll try to check in now and again.

No fog this morning. A sunny afternoon in store, but the temperature will be kept down by ocean breezes.

I’m happy this morning because I finally found a coffee mug that’s larger than the usual size.

I wish I could figure out a way to prevent Charlie from climbing over the fence (besides just keeping him inside).  The boy loves Springtime in the backyard, but he can only have it if I’ve got time to be with him because after sniffing everything over and nibbling some grass, it’s “over the fence and far away” if I’m not.  Sigh.  Hope everybody has a wonderful day.  {{{HUGS}}} bf

  16. My favorite yard bird, by far. What a voice, what amazing music. So far it’s only 75 out, so we have the door open to the back yard. Birds are quite noisy, a trio of squirrels chases through the trees, construction roars in the distance.

The field has narrowed down to the final four (to be the final three tonight) and three of the four are pretty good dancers. I already have a good idea of who will be the final two, but between them I don’t know who’s going to win.

Oddly enough, while watching the show last night I noticed that I was in a REALLY good mood all of a sudden. I don’t think it had anything to do with DWTS, just a weird rush of endorphins or something. Haven’t felt that way in a long time…

Beautiful day in the SF East Bay; sunny & bright 65F now but will be in the mid 70sF

Almost finished with a quilt top. I must be the slowest quilter ever, but still am loving the planning & process of the quilting obsession. I’ll post a photo when completed.
