In what ways are you a perfectionist? In what areas are you a purist? Do you say “coke,” “pop,” or “soda?”  Did you inhale? What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget? Have you committed any random acts of kindness lately? If your life were a movie, TV show, or novel, what genre would it fit in best?

On This Day

In 1886, Dr. John Pemberton brewed up the first batch of Coca-Cola his Atlanta back yard.

In 1951, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage for passing nuclear secrets to the Soviet Union.

In 1962, Jack Paar hosted NBC’s “Tonight Show” for the final time. Jack who?

In 1971, Army Lt. William L. Calley Jr. was convicted of murdering at least 22 Vietnamese civilians in the My Lai massacre. (He spent three years under house arrest. Tough sentence, huh?)

In 1971, a Los Angeles jury recommended the death penalty for Charles Manson, Leslie Van Houten,  Patricia Krenwinkel, and Susan Atkins for the 1969 Tate-La Bianca murders. (The sentences were later commuted when the death penalty, for a brief time, was outlawed.)

In 1992, Democratic presidential candidate Bill Clinton acknowledged that he had experimented with pot while attending Oxford, but claim, “I didn’t inhale and I didn’t try it again.” Uh-huh.

In 1999, the Dow Jones industrial average closed above 10,000 for the first time.

In 2006, Hamas formally took over the Palestinian government.

  1. In what ways are you a perfectionist? With my art. I am always working on some pieces until the are exactly right.

In what areas are you a purist? Probably my cooking. I don’t like using artificial ingredients like extracts.

Do you say “coke,” “pop,” or “soda?” soda

Did you inhale? Only when I breath. Never tried the other stuff. 😉

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget? I was walking back to my office when a floral delivery man stopped me and handed me a red rose.

Have you committed any random acts of kindness lately? I try to do at least one every day even if it is only holding open a door for someone or telling someone how nice they look.

If your life were a movie, TV show, or novel, what genre would it fit in best? Fantasy 😉

  2. Or maybe in honor of the Festival of Smoke and Mirrors, or as it is sometimes known as, the Ryan Republican Budget for 2014!!

Eugene McCarthy and Pearl Bailey … good day to be born.

If I don’t “see” you later today, have a great weekend, Floja Roja!

In what ways are you a perfectionist? Had to think about that…I don’t think I am in any area

In what areas are you a purist? About jazz – I tend to be in the purist category…too much stuff that is not jazz imho gets promoted and labelled as such. Like Kenny G.  ACK!

Do you say “coke,” “pop,” or “soda?”   Coke and soda, my grandmother from KS said “pop”

Did you inhale? Yup.  Deeply, and frequently until it no longer made me giggle or gave me the munchies. It just made me go right to sleep. Consequently, it’s been many decades since I last indulged.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?
Years ago when my building burned down on the Lower East Side of Manhattan I had a dog (who saved my life- woke me up when he smelled smoke and got me, and neighbors out of the building). The Red Cross Shelter where we went wouldn’t allow him to be there. A really nice woman who was a volunteer took him home to her farm.

Have you committed any random acts of kindness lately? Yup.

If your life were a movie, TV show, or novel, what genre would it fit in best?
    A thriller 🙂

  4. In what ways are you a perfectionist?

I’m not a perfectionist, but in my quilting I’m a pretty-darn-goodest. Doing things well (with some precision) actually is easier than doing them badly and having to adjust for it later.

In what areas are you a purist?

Words have meanings. Using the correct word is important to me.

Do you say “coke,” “pop,” or “soda?”

I grew up with soda but it’s pop now. Doesn’t much matter to me as I hardly drink any.

    Did you inhale?

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?

It was not small, but unexpected. My grandmother gave me some money when I had asked for a loan so I could pay for my semester.

Have you committed any random acts of kindness lately?

Kindness is important. I try to be kind in general.

If your life were a movie, TV show, or novel, what genre would it fit in best?

hahaaaa…. I wrote a long answer here and had to delete it.

  5. In what ways are you a perfectionist? None

In what areas are you a purist?

    Not sure

Do you say “coke,” “pop,” or “soda?”

“coke” is “Coke” that cola drink that is popular. “Pop” is either a champagne cork noise or a term for father. “Soda” is fizzy drinks.

    Did you inhale?

I smoked pot once, got stoned, didn’t like it and never did it again. So, “yes, once”.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget?

    I forget

Have you committed any random acts of kindness lately?

    How small? 🙂

If your life were a movie, TV show, or novel, what genre would it fit in best?

    Comedy.

In what ways are you a perfectionist? Too many

In what areas are you a purist? Butter. Never margarine.

Do you say “coke,” “pop,” or “soda?” Soda

Did you inhale? Yes, and that’s all I’m going to say about that.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget? Yesterday I tripped on the sidewalk and wobbled a bit. Two big black guys opened the door of the building behind me and said “Are you okay?” I said yes and they said “We would have caught you if you’d fallen.”

Have you committed any random acts of kindness lately? I try to do little ones every day. Wish I did more.

Iriti and trs are big on random acts of kindness. That’s what they were doing both times I’ve seen them IRL.

If your life were a movie, TV show, or novel, what genre would it fit in best? R rated, the kind of movie where you want to shout at the screen “No! Don’t do that!”

He is one of the many faces I remember from my childhood. He was the brother of one of my parents best friends. His music and that of the Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) has been part of the soundtrack of my life.

Here’s a lovely interview/ music session with him

He was a very quiet, and intense man. I remember his mom saying that he would lock himself away in the basement to compose and she would leave a tray at the top of the stairs…and have to remind him to come up and get it to eat.

He and the MJQ also provided a bridge for me into classical music. Here they are with one of my favorite vocalese groups.

He wrote many jazz standards like “Afternoon in Paris”

  9. slksfca

…what genre of film my life would be. I’d like to say French New Wave, but that’s not really true. More like one of Andy Warhol’s eight-hour borefests, the ones that are dull as dishwater with occasional moments of something like sex. ;-p

  10. Its the Supreme Court Stupid

In what ways are you a perfectionist? I like the date on the title of my F-Bombs to be correct.

In what areas are you a purist?  Baseball.  It should be played on grass fields and the DH should be banished to spend its days listening to Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck.

Do you say “coke,” “pop,” or “soda?” Soft drink

Did you inhale?  I refuse to answer on the basis of my rights under the Ffith Amendment.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget? Once, when asking for financial advice from a friend while in some deep straits, they offered me a “pay us back whenever” loan.

Have you committed any random acts of kindness lately? Yes

If your life were a movie, TV show, or novel, what genre would it fit in best? A Spanish Telenovela.

  11. slksfca

…”little” acts of kindness to list. And some spectacularly big ones, like the time a friend flew me to Paris because I was feeling blue. That was HUGE.

  12. mikidee

In what ways are you a perfectionist? Too many – it’s a bad, bad baaaaaad way to be (even if it does make me a better proofreader).

In what areas are you a purist? None, really, which is surprising considering Interrogatory Numero Uno.

Do you say “coke,” “pop,” or “soda?” Pop.

    Did you inhale? Yeppers.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget? A friend once showed up at my door with a bag full of grocercies and cooked for me after a particularly miserable day at work.

Have you committed any random acts of kindness lately? Yes – need to do more.

If your life were a movie, TV show, or novel, what genre would it fit in best? A tragi-comedy with plenty of bathos and wangst.

  13. raina

I’m not a perfectionist. If I can get away with “good enough” I do it. heh.

Purist: the only good tomatoes are homegrown.

We said coke growing up, but these days I usually say soda.

I inhaled a bit, but stopped at 18 because I didn’t like how it made me feel.

Acts of kindness: The most recent would be the community quilt.

Random acts of kindness: yes, small ones pretty often.

    Days of Our Lives.

  14. jlms qkw

    really trying to not.

    hmmm not sure.

soda, for anything carbonated. or the specific name.

    all the time i hope.

a hot cup of tea at a museum in rotarura, new zealand, and a teabag, packet of sugar, and creamer to take back to my hotel room too.

    yes. traffic, compliments. especially handknits.

  15. anotherdemocrat

In what ways are you a perfectionist? I was a perfectionist as a child, up through my teens.

In what areas are you a purist? too many to mention – last remnant of my perfectionism

Do you say “coke,” “pop,” or “soda?”  coke

Did you inhale? I dated a stoner for a bit in college, but found that it really didn’t do anything for me. After the 2nd time, I just would pass it on to the next person.

What small act of kindness were you once shown that you will never forget? Before I did the 1st Hill Country Ride, one of the organizers looked me in the eye & said “you can do this”. I was 35, over 200 lbs & out of breath from walking a 5K. No one had ever said something like that to me ever before — that I could do something athletic. Changed my life.

Have you committed any random acts of kindness lately? no, gotta work on that

If your life were a movie, TV show, or novel, what genre would it fit in best? My childhood would be a travelog. College would be, well, a college movie. Since then would be too boring to film (which is just fine with me)

…really stole a page from Van Gogh’s portfolio. A very nice painting, but a wee bit too … derivative … for my taste.

Still, I shouldn’t carp. I’d be lucky to paint that well. 🙂

p.s. Thanks, Floja, as always, for the stimulating enjoyment. F Bomb really makes my mornings!
