Susan Powell’s sister remembers murdered nephews on anniversary of explosion

Just as she has many times in the past year, Denise Cox spent part of her day Tuesday driving 10 miles from her Bonney Lake, Wash., home to the quiet grave that is the final resting place for her nephews.

A photo of 5-year-old Braden Powell and his 7-year-old brother Charlie sitting with their mother, Susan, is etched into a charcoal-gray headstone. Pinwheels, toy cars, dinosaurs, flowers and superhero figurines sit nearby: Some new, some left the day the two brothers were lowered into the ground together in a shared casket.

The Passing Of Louis Pagan Is A Loss Of A Hispanic Social Media Leader And Innovator

I was very saddened by the tragic news that a person that I highly admired as a online media leader, Louis Pagan, passed away over the weekend. Louis was a co-founder of both Hispanic media organizations, LATISM and Hispanicize, because he had such a great passion on studying how Latinos communicate online both professionally and personally and he wanted to teach others to utilize the latest social media technology in order to create successful marketing campaigns and build relationships. He loved to share his ideas and collaborate with others in building innovative strategies within the Hispanic online media landscape.

Concerns of Climate, Fires and Al Qaeda Burn Up Bill Hearing

Rep. Ken Ivory, R-West Jordan, surprised almost everyone in attendance by agreeing something should be done now and not later in the issue. He cited wildfires as being primarily on federally controlled public lands. He also argued that these lands are potential targets of Al Qaida terrorists who might want to set them on fire. To that end, he proposed gutting the bill and its references to climate change and rewriting it to allow the state to make long-term fire planning in response to “federal mismanagement” of public lands — the amendment failed amidst laughter of disbelief from those of the public at the hearing.

Police Chief Zeb Hemsworth calls pro-choice woman a “piece of shit scum sucking baby killing bitch” [UPDATE]

In a comment thread about a pro-Second Amendment photo, of all things, Hemsworth called the woman a “piece of shit scum sucking baby killing bitch” and a “filthy swanky slut.” He was apparently irate because she had the audacity to say: “Women have the right to chose what guns we want just like a man and we also have the right to choose if we want/need an abortion via Roe vs Wade. I assume that was the double meaning to this post.”

This is somewhere in Minnesota, possibly the Minneapolis/St.Paul metro area.

So that’s my take. Send a buncha introspective, intelligent kids into the lions den, and WHAM, things get ugly. The survivors come home. Happy, yes. Hyper-vigilant. Edgy. Heartbroken and just plain sad.

And lost.

    and am pleased to report that not much is going on here. We have been alerted that a winter storm watch is in effect starting tomorrow night. We are expecting 5-8 inches. Happy shoveling to me!

    Tsunami Debris On Alaska’s Shores Like ‘Standing In Landfill’

    Chris Pallister, president of the nonprofit Gulf of Alaska Keeper, has been cleaning up debris that washes onto Alaska’s shores for the past 11 years. Marine debris isn’t a new issue for the state, but he says his job got a whole lot harder when the tsunami wreckage began arriving last spring.

    “You’re basically standing in landfill out here,” he says, shaking his head in disgust.

    Obviously the people in Japan did not intentionally litter the shores of Alaska. But this need to build on every last inch of shoreline despite the risks of those buildings and people’s belongings ending up in the ocean (or river) should be questioned.

    German Education Minister Annette Schavan has long been dogged by accusations that she had plagiarized parts of her Ph.D. thesis. Now, the University of Düsseldorf has revoked her degree. She may be forced to resign from Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cabinet.

    So far Merkel has supported her, but with a general election looming later this year, she could become a liability. We’ll see. In any event, it’s telling that the Minister of EDUCATION cheated on her dissertation. Shavan is the German variety of conservative and a member of Merkel’s sister party CSU, which is only in Bavaria.

    … the United States’ primarily employer-based health insurance system doesn’t just impact Americans’ retirement decisions. It has also contributed to the “job lock” phenomenon, which prevents Americans from switching jobs or changing career paths because they’re too worried about losing access to their health benefits. “Job lock” ultimately creates an inefficient labor market, since workers may not take better jobs because they’re concerned about having a gap in health coverage.

    Not only an inefficient labor market but one where people stay on in jobs only for benefits … jobs that could be opened up for kids graduating from college. Those kids, and their thousands of dollars in student loans, are finding that the future is increasingly bleak.

    “That’s how we win” said the guy who lost running on his definition of “freedom” and limiting government, except for the part of government that paid his “big time” paycheck.

    Jewell remarked that she’s “excited to take on this new challenge” and joked that replacing Interior Secretary Ken Salazar would be tough.

    “I look forward to working with the dedicated employees at Interior who work so hard to care for our land and our resources every day,” she said.

    “I’m going to do my best to fill those big boots of yours,” Jewell said to Salazar, prompting another round of laughter, “but I think I might get lost in your hat.”
