Thank you for your service to the cause of justice and civil rights for Americans.

Thank you for the courage of your convictions and for simply doing what a good lawyer for the defense is charged to do.

I am deeply saddened that on the anniversary of Birmingham Sunday, one of the most egregious acts of terror against us, that I had to read of your withdrawal.

Thank you for standing on principle:

“What I have come to focus on is that in life and as a professional, the principles for which you stand are more important than the office that you hold. I’m very proud to have worked to vindicate the principles of the constitution, and I hope to continue to have those opportunities in the future.”

I’ve written about you here before, and know we’ll hear more from you in the future.

At a time when we need the Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, to be fully staffed, and working round the clock to investigate and prosecute voting rights repression and racist killings, right wing Republicans (including some cowardly Democrats) have once again shown us their un-hooded faces.

Perhaps one day, in a USA not riddled with racism, or when the Congress is not full of cowards, you will head the DOJ, or perhaps sit on the Supreme Court.

Until that time, I wish you well in your new job in private practice.

and deleted it.  I am so angry about this that I could spit.  Tom Perez busted his ass getting DOJ Civil rights back to functioning – and it was a major effort.

Now All I see and hear are whines about what DOJ isn’t doing.

Perhaps people should read this history:

Bush’s long history of politicizing justice

It’s not only the U.S. attorneys who are threatened by partisan politics. Since Day One, the Bush administration has been quietly dismantling the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division.

  2. He would make a great Supreme Court justice. And some day … really … we will have a country not enthrall to the haters and racists who are denying us his services.

  3. For Immediate Release, September 15, 2014, Presidential Nominations and Withdrawal Sent to the Senate

    […]

    WITHDRAWAL SENT TO THE SENATE:

Debo P. Adegbile, of New York, to be an Assistant Attorney General, vice Thomas E. Perez, resigned, which was sent to the Senate on January 6, 2014.

But there is nothing ordinary about this. A man was vilified for doing his job, defending someone charged with a crime, and upholding a key part of the U.S. Constitution, the right to counsel. And as a result of this action, our country will not have the services of a highly qualified candidate for an important post.

This was a win for those who would prefer that people of integrity not fill any positions in government where they could make a difference. You need to look no further than the Republican filibustering of appointments to the NLRB to try to decertify it and the filibustering of the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in an attempt to nullify the law that created that agency.

The Republicans in the Senate, like their favorite judges on the Supreme Court, cherry pick the constitution to suit their ideology. The 6th amendment:

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense.

When attorneys can’t defend their clients because it might offend a future chickensh*t Senator, we have sunk pretty low.

Debo Adegbile deserved better treatment. Our constitution deserved better treatment. Our country deserves better treatment.
