Tuesday Morning Herd Check-in

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Fierces on the Weather Critter Comment are obligatory welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, … or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

Passover is over for me since the tradition in my family is that it ends at noon on the last day instead of at night.  I’m looking forward to being able to have some bread again (after having my first taste of peanut butter in eight days since even though peanuts are not chometz they’re prohibited by tradition.

headed to campus later this afternoon to guest lecture for intro to women’s studies (about 125 students) on the role of women of color in 2nd wave feminism – women who are often overlooked when “The Women’s Movement” is discussed.

I enjoy giving the lecture every semester – most students can’t name any Asian, Native American or Latina women from that era..and can barely come up with the names of any black women.

Will be back in time for the usual Tuesday cross-post from Bkos.

  3. Supreme Court Will Hear Challenge To Ohio Ban On Campaign Lies

The U.S. Supreme Court hears arguments Tuesday testing whether states can make it a crime to lie about candidates during an election campaign.

At issue is an Ohio law that imposes potential jail time or a fine for the first offense, and possibly loss of the right to vote for anyone convicted twice. The case before the court, however, involves not a person, but an organization.

During the 2010 midterm elections, the anti-abortion Susan B. Anthony List wanted to put up a billboard ad targeting then-Rep. Steven Driehaus, D-Ohio, for his vote on the Affordable Care Act.

The ad said, “Shame on Steve Driehaus! Driehaus voted FOR taxpayer-funded abortion.”

In fact, Driehaus and other anti-abortion Democrats supported the health care bill only after President Obama agreed to issue an that specified insurance plans in the health care exchanges would not use tax dollars for abortion, except in cases of rape, incest or when the life of the woman would be endangered.

Driehaus filed a complaint with the Ohio Elections Commission, and the commission found probable cause of a violation. The ad never went up because the advertising company that owned the billboard space refused to allow it.

I think it should be illegal to lie about a candidate during a campaign. And it is not enough to give them a slap on the wrist AFTER the election … especially if the lie helped elect the liar. Honest elections need honesty.

The Supreme Court is actually looking into the issue of standing: can a person not harmed sue. The anti-abortion group was not thrown in jail because the billboard company never allowed the sign so no one was ever charged under the law.

But the larger question is whether or not states can pass laws making lies illegal when it directly impacts the honesty of elections. I suspect that if money is free speech and there are no limits on money that the Roberts Court sees valuable, that they will not be interested in putting any limits on the lies that lying liars can tell.

This part is important: “the advertising company that owned the billboard space refused to allow it.” Sue the butts off media outlets that air outright lies. Make them defend them over and over and over again in court until they just get sick of it.

Warm & muggy. Guess I’m gonna get tired of typing those words between now & October. Ha – I just refreshed the weather on my phone & it’s only 60 degrees outside — my definition of “warm & muggy” is certainly going to change, 60 will be “cold” in a month or so.

Eating breakfast, brought queso makings because today is the actual day for the baby shower for my co-worker. And another co-worker, different division but same floor, is supposed to be becoming the dad of twins today. Of course, babies do what they want when they want.

I completely forgot to pack my gym bag for my tri group tonight. Grrr.

  5. Diana in NoVa

afternoon here in NoVa. The sky is blue but with lovely, streaky swathes of white across it. It’s so mild! One of the trees at my son’s place is blossoming. I call it “the crumpled pink Kleenex tree” because that’s what the blossoms look like, and I, alas, am woefully ignorant of botany.

Have been experiencing some very strange episodes of vertigo since Sunday morning. They’re quite scary because the room spins round and round! They disappear when I straighten up slowly. Just opened the WaPo Health Section to find that today’s front-page article is about…vertigo!

Have emailed my doctor. Don’t have time right now to call the advice nurse and hang on the phone for hours because we have a lot to do today. When I do go to the doctor, he’s going to find that it’s related to a disturbance in the inner ear.

Other than that, will be picking up Shakespeare’s birthday cake at 11. Have to get busy writing the blog for his birthday.

Denise, hope your throat is better!  Wish I were a student in your class. Jan, hope you warm up, and Portlaw, here’s to a double espresso for you.  Wish I could get here earlier, but in the mornings I get Miss Pink Cheeks off to school. Today I gave her a toasted English muffin with butter and marmalade, and she was so delighted with it that we sang, “Do you know the Muffin Man/The Muffin Man who lives in Drury Lane?” all the way to day care.

Four and a half weeks and I won’t be driving her today care, she’ll be with me! 🙂  Everyone have a good day.

“consultants” on the American Terrorism database yesterday, interviews with prospective new faculty today through Thursday, honor society speaker Thursday, and some sort of colloquium some day this week – I have nothing to do with any of these events except processing the travel reimbursements and other invoices – when they actually bring the people in question to me so I can their information.  And we’re still enrolling kids in whatever classes are still open.  Sigh.

Lost a friend to cancer yesterday.  Actually about 2 weeks ago but she stopped breathing yesterday.  Lots of people, including my mother, must have been waiting for her at The Bridge.  She is – not was, is – a good person.

May or may not be able to check back today.  {{{HUGS}}} bf

Running errands and taking care of chores.

Watched several videos of Alan Watts’ talks last night. Pensive mood lately. Probably a combination of too many birthdays, not enough time to get everything on the list done, and concern for the kids and grandkids.

I was at Esalen for a continuing education workshop in March 1973. Alan Watts was there. He was full of energy and intensity. I was stunned when I saw he had died later in the year, on November 16.
