Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Thursday Morning Herd Check-in

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary

Fierces on the Weather Critter Comment are obligatory welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, … or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

    High in the upper 20’s.

Haz almost a foot on the ground and supposed to keep snowing in waves of light & heavy until tomorrow morning.

On the plus side, I got my stitches out yesterday before this mess hit!

Statement by the President on Congress Voting to Raise the Debt Ceiling

I’m pleased that Republicans and Democrats in Congress have come together to pay for what they’ve already spent, and remove the threat of default from our economy once and for all. The full faith and credit of the United States is too important to use as leverage or a tool for extortion. Hopefully, this puts an end to politics by brinksmanship and allows us to move forward to do more to create good jobs and strengthen the economy.  Instead of wasting time creating new crises, Congress should be focused on creating new jobs and opportunities. That’s what the American people deserve from their representatives in Washington, and that’s what they should get.

Senate leadership had a deal in place where the debt ceiling increase could pass with 51 votes, thereby protecting endangered senators from teaparty primariers. Apparently Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) blew that up by demanding 60 votes. This:

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz sat with eyes glued to his mobile device as the chaos he provoked ensnared his Republican leaders on the Senate floor.[…]

After what seemed like an eternity, a grim-faced Sen. Mitch McConnell, the party leader who faces a tea party challenge back home, finally voted yes. An equally grim-faced Sen. John Cornyn, the party’s No. 2 leader and Cruz’s Texas colleague, changed his vote from no to yes.[…]

Cruz is unwilling to step back from the fight, even if it undercuts his party’s strategy.

THAT will be the demise of the teaparty … their willingness to blow up the senate election in Kentucky, and any election, over an ideological stand. Good riddance.

to close this morning (I had already notified students last night that I was gonna be a no-show today) so I’m home and warm – watching the snow fall.

Some weather sites have predicted we will get as much as 18 inches here in the Catskills, but weatherdude’s site at wunderground.com says about 8 inches. I hope he’s right.

Hope Meese in the storm path have power since I see news reports that over a half a million folks in the south are without it.

    Stay safe (and warm)!

and it’s still coming down. Sometimes it’s sleet rather than snow. Not terribly sure about the difference between sleet and freezing rain–snow looks like big white flakes falling sideways and sleet looks like white rain falling vertically.

We won’t be going anywhere today. Luckily we still have power and Dearly has stores of gasoline for the generator. I can put up with a lot, but not having tea and coffee drives me crazy.

We haven’t had this much snow since Snowmageddon four years ago. My son is working from home today; daughter-in-law, who works for the federal government, is off today, so Miss Pink Cheeks is going to have a nice, rare day at home with Mommy and Daddy.

Denise, glad they closed your school. Iriti, glad you got those stitches out yesterday! Everyone stay safe and warm.

You would think at some point, exhaustion would overcome insomnia & you’d sleep. You would be wrong. Ugh.

Eye doc yesterday was fine. I’m getting astigmatism but not enough to change my prescription yet.

It’s supposed to warm up today, and stay that way at least through Sunday. I’m not looking past then, though I vaguely remember hearing something about 80 degrees. But all I can cope with right now is right now & Sunday.

And a full moon is shining perfect;y in my window. It’s windy so the branches of the old maple trees are moving and the drifting clouds add to the morning drama.

Ron had fluid drained from the incision on his hip yesterday and it was clear, yay! Another two weeks (and possibly more) of antibiotics though, just to stay safe.

and the sun is shining.  I hope the folks who are currently dealing with what we had early last week (and still hasn’t melted off yet) are all safe and warm.  Good health to those in Mooseland.  {{{HUGS}}} bf
