Friday Morning Coffee Hour: Check In and Hang Out for the Herd

 photo Fridaymorningcoffeehour_zpsba607506.jpg

Good morning! I am your substitute host for today, and yes, I am taking names to report back to iriti any infractions (I used to deal with high school students without benefit of body armor – I can handle this)

Friday Coffee Hour and check-in is an open thread and general social hour. Come back when time allows through the day – the conversation continues.

It’s traditional but not obligatory to give us a weather check where you are and let us know what’s new, interesting, challenging or even routine in your life lately. Nothing is particularly obligatory here except:

Always remember the Moose Golden (Purple?) Rule:

Be kind to each other… or else.

What can be easier than that, right?

Right??

Bueller??

Instant nice person

However, it is morning in the Eastern time zone. Currently 27&deg, with an expected low of 19 before we go up to 46.

Iriti’s surgery went well, but they did find a bit more damage than expected. The bicep muscle was also torn, so they fixed that while they were in there. However, that will slow rehab a bit. Speaking of rehab, I start rehab on my hand next Monday. Fun!! – NOT!

  2. It is 7 degrees in Madison WI, on its way up to 13. Another dip into the cold but not nearly as bad as last week, so I am good with it.

Lots of crazy in the news these days. I think the State of the Union, and the Republican’s flailing response(s), has people on the right a bit unsettled. We have House “leadership” claiming that they will repeal the ACA and replace it with a bill that requires middle income Americans to pay a tax on their health insurance, does not cover pre-existing conditions, and has as its goal to be “Not Obamacare” rather than providing real help for the crisis in health care that the ACA addressed. We have other Republicans saying that they know that people are now depending on the ACA and that they can’t just cancel all those people’s policies. We have Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) wearing the mantle of the original tea dumpers and taking his orders from Boston not Washington (huh?).

And do not get me started on Utah and the school lunch insanity there. I am really not sure how people who don’t realize that poor kids can’t help being poor get in positions of power. Even if those kids were not poor, the kids had absolutely NOTHING to do with their parents not paying into their lunch account. If your procedure does not allow you to identify students with no lunch balance until after they have gone through the lunch line and placed a nutritious lunch on their tray, then CHANGE YOUR STUPID PROCEDURE! Don’t grab the kids lunches and throw perfectly good food away. Wonkette said it best:

… instead of saying “oh hey, child, you do not have enough money, so I will put it down on this list and call your mom, run along now” or whatever good thing one would say to a tiny hungry child, you say “oh, now I must rip this food from your hands because you have no money.” And then, rather than being able to not waste that food and give it to a deserving kid with money, you throw it in the garbage. And then, after all that, you give the un-moneyed kids a different, shittier lunch. This is neither an efficient cost-saving measure nor a very humane thing to do, Utah.

Busy last day of the month. If I get my work done, I’ll be back.

and though they found more damage – best that it was taken care of right then.  Hugs and love and prayers for speedy healing.

    Welcome trs!

A toasty 23 here in Saugerties NY, and perhaps snow tomorrow.

today & tomorrow, then another Arctic plunge……

On the way out the door to the dermatologist. I feel fine. Well, still hungry. I lost 4 pounds! Yeah, I know that doesn’t stay off, but still….

    I’ll check back in later.

Am going to celebrate the New Year by eating a lot of Szechuan food tonight!

Happy iriti’s surgery is over and she is home but sorry to hear it was more complicated. Sounds as though she had good surgeons.  Good luck in rehab to her for her shoulder and trs for his hand!

it doesn’t until I get home as I may be walking today.  This %^&^&&0 cold just keeps getting worse/more uncomfortable!  Moving into my chest and sore throat so I don’t just sound bad, it actually hurts, and developing a cough to go with it.  Looks like I’ve got my once-every-five-years really bad cold.  dammit.  And nothing I take to help works more than one dose.  (1 dose of generic nyquil & I slept OK, next night no sleep.  1 dose of generic Afrin last night and I got some sleep, 1 dose this morning and it might as well have been water.  Next up, generic robitussin-D!)

Holding the good thought for iriti – while sorry the problem was worse than originally thought, glad they caught it before more damage was done.  Healing thoughts to everybody, myself included 🙂  Have a good Imbolc – {{{HUGS}}} bf

hope iriti continues to heal up and gets back quickly.

we’re gearing up for a Chinese New Year party this weekend.  homemade spring rolls and other delights, washed down with some decidedly un-chinese grape-based bevs.

    gong xi fa cai, moosers!

I’m so glad this week is over! Ron is noticeably stronger this morning…..big relief! He starts the out patient PT program today and is hopeful he can move from the walker to a cane. I’m ok, just very tired.

to you all. It’s afternoon now, but couldn’t get here any sooner, I’m afraid.

What a morning. Have been on the telephone with relatives in Texas to tell them about the memorial service in Dallas tomorrow. Arranged with my favorite florist for flowers to be delivered to the funeral home before noon. The woman on the other end was very kind and helpful.

The arrangements were decided only this morning, so unfortunately I will not have time to fly to Dallas for the service tomorrow afternoon. My beloved uncle died yesterday morning. However, I will think of him–indeed, I’ve been doing so for 10 days, ever since he went back into the hospital–and reflect on what a good man he was.

    Everyone have a good weekend!

for the primary, stuff goes kablooey

So, there’s my club, and there’s the University club. There’s nothing that says students can’t be members — in fact, membership in both clubs has been encouraged. We have always had our endorsement meetings together — often very inconvenient for members of my club, but we’ve always done it that way. If someone is endorsed by both clubs, they have a “coalition” endorsement.

Today, I got an e-mail about, and there’s an announcement on our Facebook page, about a major rules change. People who are members of the University Dems can’t also vote in my club’s endorsement. There’s reference to club-packing, but I just checked my e-mail & there’s no e-mail about this. I’m the secretary, I should have at least received notice of an executive committee meeting. Granted, I was unconscious a lot of yesterday & not in the best of shape the day before, but this is still really disturbing. I just posted on FB that if you’re a member, you’re a member, no matter what other clubs you belong to. Now, if people didn’t join by the deadline, or dues for a bunch of people were paid with 1 check, that’s another thing. But if we said you’re a member then you get to vote, as far as I’m concerned.

So, now I have to start tomorrow’s training at the original really ungodly hour, and get done what I can by 10:30 so I can get to the meeting by an hour before. And people will be all pissed off. Great.
