Friday Coffee Hour: Check In and Hangout for the Herd

Good morning, Moosekind. TGIF!

Today: The saga of the self-healing Jeep. Last August our daughter had an unfortunate incident that resulted in the heavy plastic back corner of my Jeep being dented in pretty significantly. We chose not to fix it because A) Jeep and B) 2003. Anyway a couple of days ago we noticed that the dent had spontaneously popped back out. A little Armor All and you can’t tell it ever happened.

Working theory is that the shrink/expand cycle from our recent temperature roller coaster somehow popped it out, but still. Creepy in an awesome kinda way. Or awesome in a creepy kinda way. Not exactly sure which.

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the weather jar comment are still welcome.

Friday Coffee Hour and check-in is an open thread and general social hour. Come back when time allows through the day – the conversation continues.

It’s traditional but not obligatory to give us a weather check where you are and let us know what’s new, interesting, challenging or even routine in your life lately. Nothing is particularly obligatory here except:

Always remember the Moose Golden (Purple?) Rule:

Be kind to each other… or else.

What could be simpler than that, right?

  1. 10 degrees on its way up to 20. Snow showers today and tomorrow. We probably got a couple of inches here yesterday, just enough to slow down the wise … and put the not-as-wise in the ditch!

Today is a coffee-IV day: sips will not be enough. This week was too long; thank goodness they haven’t repealed the weekend yet.

Apparently the president will be giving a speech today at 11am Eastern about the changes he wants to see made to the NSA. Critics are complaining that he is “kicking the can to Congress to legislate how the intelligence community operates”. Excuse me? Isn’t Congress our elected representatives? Isn’t that how it’s supposed to work?? Just like the president saying “okay, I’m open to a vote in Congress on intervention in Syria”, this is another step away from the imperial presidency. After 8 years of the Deciderer in Chief (how did that work out for you, America?), we should welcome a president who wants to involve the people’s representatives in how our intelligence community functions.

If I have time, I will put up a liveblog. So I better get at my work queue!!

    See all y’alls later.

25 here going up to 40ish, snow tomorrow and Sunday.

Tired and uncomfortable from a restless night – put ice packs on my jaw every 20 minutes so I don’t have major swelling, but lower jaw is still sore from extractions.

They offered me Vicodin, but I declined –  I hate opioid  pain meds – they make me feel worse than the pain, so I’m taking strong ibuprofen instead.

Will be heading back to the dentist early this morning for them to check up post surgery.

I will not be able to really chomp on food for a week while my gums heal (or use Fixodent)- but looking forward to a real meal – soon.

For those of you who are young enough to have all your teeth – be grateful!

I’m grateful that I don’t have to have carved wooden choppers like those in the George Washington myth (his dentures were actually made from hippo ivory)

34 thinking of climbing to 47. I have a deadline so will be drinking that trenta coffee all day and tomorrow.

Hope Denise has a pain free day. Must say I am staggered by the idea of hippo ivory.  Iriti, how is your shoulder, and how are everyone’s aches and pains doing? Hope it’s a pain free day for all.

Eating breakfast, drinking tea, dealing with water faucet nose. Oh, and I woke up at 4:30 for no reason. (it wasn’t my allergies) Sigh. Well, my workout tomorrow is at a less ungodly hour, and I’ll sleep in some on Monday — the MLK Day stuff starts (I think) at 9; at my statue — which I think is much prettier than the one in DC. Anyway, the point I was making is that I’ll get to rest some.

I hope my handy friend is going to be at my house today. I’ve been stuffing a towel between the doorknob & the side because the weather stripping around the front door is basically nonexistent. I’ve replaced it twice myself, and I do it wrong. She said she has time off today, so I hope she goes by & fixes it.

My plan for the day: stay conscious. Early bed because “less ungodly” tomorrow morning is still really damn early. Pretty weather — I think the highs are supposed to be in the 60s.

Northern Virginia.  Denise, sorry for what you’re going through!  What a bummer.

Didn’t sign Michelle Obama’s card, even though I adore her, because in my experience signing something like that is linked to a request for money. I’m so tired of being asked!  Didn’t like when I was earning and certainly don’t like it now.

Hoping to get some writing done today and tomorrow. Did finally clean up my office sufficiently that people don’t blench when they go in there!

Miss Pink Cheeks is to stay with us Saturday night so her parents can celebrate Mommy’s birthday, which is today, as it happens.

Everyone have a good Friday and a great weekend!  Government employees have the day off on Monday, as it’s Martin Luther King Day. Private industry doesn’t observe that day, as far as I know.

Expected high of 44ยบ later today.  Trying to get a few chores done, including getting started setting up two web pages. One is a blog on both professional issues and fun stuff that interests me. The other will be a more or less static business web site.

Stayed up way too late last night, and slept late. About to try and get on the outside of some Cajun coffee. I heard the coffee pot in the kitchen stop gurgling just now. So, if everyone will excuse me….

Sliding back down into the 40s starting Monday (I won’t be here – the University’s closed so I’ll be offline).  Things have calmed down a bit – I don’t know who has the Provost’s ear but I bless him/her/them.  Nonsensical reports of information already in the payroll database have been canceled.  Now I can get back to my actual, ya know, work. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hope Denise and iriti and all the meeses with aches and pains have a better day than they’ve been having.  Happy 50th b’day to FLOTUS (the thing that bothered me when Barack Obama was elected wasn’t that he was black – that was a win – it was that he’s over 10 years younger than I am LOL).  And all of us whose hope is so strong it keeps popping up like the mole in Whack-a-Mole, hope the President’s speech adds energy to that hope (and the Rs/TPers miss again).  {{{HUGS}}} and have the good weekend.

I’m so glad this long week is over. It we’re not nodding off by evening we may even go to a movie tonight. I would like to see Inside Llewyn Davis in a theater with the movie sound system.

The movie has had mixed reviews but the music is very nice.
