President Obama: “Building an economy that grows for everybody”

From the White House – Wednesday, December 4, 2013

President Obama discusses the twin challenges of growing income inequality and shrinking economic mobility and how they pose a fundamental threat to the American Dream.

But government can’t stand on the sidelines in our efforts.  Because government is us.  It can and should reflect our deepest values and commitments.  And if we refocus our energies on building an economy that grows for everybody, and gives every child in this country a fair chance at success, then I remain confident that the future still looks brighter than the past, and that the best days for this country we love are still ahead.

Musings

I originally wanted to write about the Iran nuclear deal based on the opinions of people whose opinions I respect as knowledgeable and straight-forward; these are people who aren’t generally on television giving their opinions as the media are more interested in the he said/she said back and forth of political operatives or staffers or Congresspeople than in detailing the actual agreement.  And since my mind tends to flow in Class IV rapid type stream of consciousness I decided to go with the flow and let ‘er rip on a variety of largely linked topics.

Wednesday Watering Hole: Check In & Hangout for the Herd

Good morning, Moosekind. Don’t forget to let your peeps know where to find you.

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the weather jar comment are still welcome.

The common Moose, Alces alces, unlike other members of the deer family, is a solitary animal that doesn’t form herds. Not so its rarer but nearest relative, Alces purplius, the Motley Moose. Though sometimes solitary, the Motley Moose herds in ever shifting groups at the local watering hole to exchange news and just pass the time.

President Obama Speaks on the Affordable Care Act: “We’re not going back”.

The president spoke Tuesday on the Affordable Care Act.

Transcript: Remarks by the President on the Affordable Care Act

The bottom line is this law is working and will work into the future.  People want the financial stability of health insurance.  And we’re going to keep on working to fix whatever problems come up in any startup, any launch of a project this big that has an impact on one-sixth of our economy, whatever comes up we’re going to just fix it because we know that the ultimate goal, the ultimate aim, is to make sure that people have basic security and the foundation for the good health that they need.

Now, we may never satisfy the law’s opponents.  I think that’s fair to say.  Some of them are rooting for this law to fail — that’s not my opinion, by the way, they say it pretty explicitly.  (Laughter.)  Some have already convinced themselves that the law has failed, regardless of the evidence.  But I would advise them to check with the people who are here today and the people that they represent all across the country whose lives have been changed for the better by the Affordable Care Act.

And my main message today is:  We’re not going back.

So if you’ve already got health insurance or you’ve already taken advantage of the Affordable Care Act, you’ve got to tell your friends, you’ve got to tell your family.  Tell your coworkers.  Tell your neighbors.  Let’s help our fellow Americans get covered.

Don’t Come Knocking on the Door

It happens more often than I might have thought: someone mistaken for a prowler or a burglar is shot and more often than not killed by a homeowner.

Some, though, just really make you shake your head and fear for this country.

I like this #GivingTuesday idea – update!

There were a couple of stories about this on the news this morning, and it is all over my FB & Twitter feeds. Giving Tuesday, to follow Black Friday & Cyber Monday, where people (supposedly) were all being self-indulgent. I like it not only because I’m raising money for the Austin Children’s Shelter – look for me – 1st column, 10th name, but it seems to balance things out. Come into the rest of the diary & I’ll tell you why you should give to the Austin Children’s Shelter.
