Sunday All Day Check-in for the Herd

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Fierces on the Weather Critter Comment are obligatory welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

On weekends (and holidays), you may find the check-in thread earlier or later than normal because … it is the weekend! Moosies need their beauty rest:

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce … or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

going up to 66.  This is what my grandmom used to call pneumonia weather – rapid shifts in temps from cold to warm and back again.

I saw some people in the mall yesterday wearing shorts.

  2. Wall Street Journal Op-Ed Bemoans The End Of White Rule In The United States

There are a lot of problems in Washington, D.C these days, but not many solutions to them. Inefficiency, an allergy to cooperation, and stiff resistance to pragmatism have all ground the federal government to a stand-still. But one op-ed contributor to the Wall Street Journal knows what the real problem is: not enough rich, white men.

In Saturday’s paper and online, author Joseph Epstein mourns the collapse of what he describes as the “genuine ruling class, drawn from what came to be known as the WASP establishment,” (WASP, the commonly-held acronym for White, Anglo-Saxon Protestant). Instead, he argues, we are living in a meritocracy, governed not by an elite subset of the uppermost crust of society but rather by a group of people who overcame some kind of adversity and achieved success thanks to their own merits, not based on what family they were born into. This, according to Epstein, is a tragedy.

Have had toasted whole-wheat waffles with blackberries and blackberry jam. Forgot to eat the clementines. Now drinking coffee.

When I went out to get the newspaper at six-thirty (yes, the dog woke me up again), the sky was gloomy, with gray clouds moving past like a herd of charging elephants. It was warm and windy, presaging rain, which is happening now.

There’s an article in my local rag, The WaPo, this morning about how women are stressed out because it’s largely up to us to provide the “Christmas cheer.” I know I’m stressed out, for sure.

It’s raining hard now.  Going to take a little “coffee time” to read the newspaper before I start on the day’s numerous chores. Hope everyone will have a good day, including–if at all possible–some rest.

Friday was sandals weather, now back to needing a jacket — and it is supposed to freeze the next 2 nights. Winter in Texas.

Eating breakfast (finally — an hour is a long time to wait for breakfast) & watching Up — good show today. Only 1 day to work next week, and movies every day so coming up with food next week is interesting. I’ll buy yogurt & granola for breakfast, and make myself at least eat an apple before I go for the popcorn. And lunch/dinners…… Christmas lunch I’ll have at the Alamo Drafthouse, but I should get something nice for dinner — maybe one of those Tofurkey meals.

Toe is not to pink yet, but it isn’t waking me up, so that’s a vast improvement. My friend’s surgery went well — she actually left the hospital yesterday.

My son, grand daughter and I are going to a performance of An Appalachian Christmas this afternoon. Emma is studying violin this year and Hans enjoys music as much as I do so this should be a treat. RonK has suffered through listened to all the Christmas music he can tolerate so he’ll stay home and cook dinner 🙂

Campbell’s Cream of Tomato soup with Ritz crackers and lots of pepper.

Dearly Beloved isn’t feeling well, so he’s watching British football on telly. I had a highly successful shopping expedition this morning (not “fun” shopping, just plastic storage bins and groceries), so now feel entitled to a little R&R. And dinner is a no-brainer tonight, so I’ll be free to concentrate on Christmas-related chores.
