Saturday All Day Check-in for the Herd

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Fierces on the Weather Critter Comment are obligatory welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

On weekends (and holidays), you may find the check-in thread earlier or later than normal because … it is the weekend! Moosies need their beauty rest:

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

  1. 10 Beautiful Photos Of Older People Looking At Younger Reflections Of Themselves In The Mirror

Some of these are quite poignant.

The photo of the one-time nurse, now in the nursing home dependent on her caregiver, was particularly so. It is the cycle of nature: we are the strong ones that others depend on and then we become those who are cared for. We learn from both circumstances although I bet that we learn more from a situation of helplessness. I often wonder what kind of world we would have if the strong and powerful, now filled with their own sense of invulnerability and self-worth, could spend some time in the shoes of those who need to be cared for, not because they are lazy or weak-willed, but because they are sick or unlucky or lacking necessary skills … or just old. I think it would be much harder for those in power to deny the value of that care.

  2. Portlaw

headed for the high fities, with some rain. Warm and wet. Terrific.  Hope it’s a good day in the rest of Mooseland.

  3. blue jersey mom

We have the same weather as Portlaw. I am making pumpkin bread. Then dad and I are headed out to collect donations for the Crisis Ministry–the largest food bank in the Trenton-Princeton region.

  4. Diana in NoVa

and cloudy, heading for 57 F.  Tonight is Vegetarian Night at our house, so I’m going to make all-vegetable soup, which is delicious, and serve it with hot rolls and butter. Not sure what will follow, unless some of those pears now ripening under a glass bowl (encouraged by a lone apple) will be ready by tonight. Then we’ll have pears, apple cider, and walnuts.

Our Miss Pink Cheeks spent the night with us, and consented to a bath and getting into jammies by 8 p.m. so we could watch a movie. We watched “The Fox and the Child” for about an hour, but it was sending us to sleep, so we switched it off! It was interesting in a way, but we like more of a story, like “The Secret Garden” and “The Little Princess.” Went on line and ordered “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” and “The Railway Children” so the next time she stays over we’ll have something a bit more interesting to watch.

Today will be a day of ironing and polishing silver, because I can’t forget that I’m having 12 people for Thanksgiving dinner week after next! All must be ready. Did manage to hide the few Christmas presents I’ve bought in the guest bedroom closet.

Hope everyone will have a nice, restful Saturday–rain or not!

Our grand girls and their little dog Maggie spent the night last night and will be with us all day. I can hear them waking up now, so a few more quiet minutes and then the busy fun begins!

  6. pittiepat

Yesterday morning some of us were in the lobby yakking away while waiting for the postman when one of our (more annoying) fellow residents came flying down the hall in a blind panic.  “I’ve lost my keys, somebody please help me.”  Everyplace she had been was turned over, including the large community room and kitchen.  No joy.  About 15 minutes later she shouted that she had found them.  Now, this was not one or two keys, but a rather substantial bunch.  Where did she find them?  In her bra.  How could she not know that?  Anyway, glad she finally found what wasn’t really lost!

  7. Nurse Kelley

It is currently 39° but feels a lot colder, even inside.

I’m re-reading Bill Bryson’s book about Australia, In A Sunburned Country. If you missed it (it came out 13 years ago) I highly recommend it. The man is hysterically funny, yet manages to give you some excellent history lessons. (Some of them are definitely NOT funny, like the century of the White Australia policy.)

  8. emeraldmaiden

It’s kinda cool outside, and kinda gray, so I’m hanging out with a warm cat and a warm electric blanket. Seems every time I get up for long, my leg demands a return to warmth. Cat just likes the blankie, I thnk!

Doing businessy stuff and working on getting files off the old laptop, since I’m sitting anyway. Also saving my energy for making a yummy dinner tonight.
