Thursday Morning Herd Check-in

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary

Fierces on the Weather Critter Comment are obligatory welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

  1. Samhain – The Cycle Begins (Again)

Technically, the Wheel of the Year, being circular, has no beginning and no end. However, most pagans celebrate Samhain as the beginning of the new year:

Samhain is one of the eight annual festivals, often referred to as ‘Sabbats’, observed as part of the Wiccan Wheel of the Year …

It is generally observed on October 31 in the Northern Hemisphere, starting at sundown. Samhain is [the] time to celebrate the lives of those who have passed on, and it often involves paying respect to ancestors, family members, elders of the faith, friends, pets and other loved ones who have died.

Samhain (pronounced “SOW-win) is also called the last harvest and is the time to connect to each other and to those who came before us. The veil is thin between our world and the place where the spirits of our ancestors and loved ones dwell. It can be a time to ask for their advice for a particularly thorny problem or to just feel their closeness and enjoy the memories of their time on earth.

Connect to those who are with us in this world and those who are with us only in spirit.

Blessed Samhain and Happy New Year to my pagan and non-pagan friends alike.

on the way.  Spending the day writing – all my papers got graded but about a third of them are “re-dos” (papers I told students they would have to re-write) so I’m not really done.

Drinking coffee, eating pound cake and will spend the weekend switching my closets – have hauled out the winter clothing bins.

    It’s long johns time!

One of the things I miss about living up here is no trick or treating – when I lived in the city I enjoyed all of the kids who came to my door each year, and looked forward to seeing what the most popular costumes would be.

No one comes here to the farm with kids in tow so it doesn’t feel very Halloweeny…will get some candy corn though.

Really heavy rain, lots of thunder & lightning & serious flooding. When I say “lots” of rain – some place got 15 inches of rain. I’m posting this link not because you need to know the school closures but for the picture. That’s the Stevie Ray Vaughn statue on the trail of Lady Bird Lake, with water up to his hips.

They say the rain will clear out by this afternoon — that in non-flooded areas, kids will even be able to go trick-or-treating.

I brought my robe & hat, will post a pic later if I take one.

Serious caffeine today, given last night’s many sleep interruptions.

going for a high of 73 F.  This is going to be a busy, busy day!

Thanks for all the Samhain blessings, songs, and stories!  I’m even more glad than usual that I came to drink from the Moose Pool this morning.

Austin is evidently getting hammered with rain.  Wonder if poor old Lake Travis will start filling up again.

We’ll get some rain after trick-or-treating is over but nothing like what the middle of the country is experiencing.

Feeling good today–niece and great-nephew are coming for morning coffee, then I have to buy pumpkins. Before that I have to frost the Pentacle Cakes. The sparkling cider for our ritual tonight is chilling in the refrigerator.

    Have a good day, everyone!

Fog is drifting through the neighborhood; it’s almost magical.

I’ve got a good list of stuff to do today, so I need to limber up, have a cup or two of ambition, and get to it.

around mid-afternoon at which point the temps should start dropping but not enough before midnight to keep the few trick-or-treaters I get from coming around.  I hand out quarters rather than candy – I’m assuming there are still little kid rides at the mall for the little guys and video games that take quarters for the older ones 🙂  Dealing with headache – cycling from just noticeable (a condition under which I can actually get work done) to skullbanging (get moar coffee and wait it out) and I can’t figure out either the cycle or the cause.  Oh well.  Enjoy whatever form of end of October/beginning of November holy day you do or do not celebrate.  {{{HUGS}}} bf

I’m enjoying the photos my daughter posts on her WordPress site, Northwest Frame of Mind The maple tree in her garden is lovely….

Thanks for sharing Samhain thoughts and songs. I watch the seasons change in the old maple trees outside my bedroom window, and it’s now light enough to see a few golden leaves remain.

and happy reformation day, or why the pope isn’t completely in charge of everything anymore day.  although that was not luther’s intent.

maintenance person is here for weatherstripping this morning.  she was a bit late, but she works nights and stops by on the way home.  she has just “discovered” that the front door (that she painted last summer) is not square to the frame.

the weather is mild – and it will not snow before halloween this year unless something drastic and unforecasted happens.  today’s high in the mid 50’s.  lows near 40.  overcast mostly.  it is probably time to find the happy light and a suitable location for it.

greetings to all for any holiday you are celebrating.  tomorrow, for me, is all saints, using the same traditions as samhain for remembering those on the other side.
