On This Day

In 1843, Britain’s News of the World tabloid was first published.

In 1880, the very busy Thomas Edison opened his first lamp factory.

In 1890, the crown jewel of the National Park system, Yosemite (me? Biased?) was established as a national park by Congress (who once upon a time actually used to do things).

In 1891, Stanford University opened.

In 1910, “union thugs” planted a bomb at the Los Angeles Times building in Los Angeles that killed 21 people. The bomb was supposed to go off during the night when they thought the building would be empty, but the timer malfunctioned and there were people in the building working on a late edition.

In 1931, the George Washington Bridge opened to traffic, enabling commutes between New Jersey and New York.

In 1949, Chairman Mao declared China to be The People’s Republic of China.

In 1957, eager to show that the US was not filled with godless commies, the phrase “In God We Trust” was added to paper currency. (Boy, that sure showed them!)

In 1962, Johnny Carson’s version of the Tonight Show premiered.

In 1971, Walt Disney World opened outside of Orlando, Florida.

In 1971, the first CT scan was performed in a British hospital.

In 1982, Walt Disney World went one better and opened EPCOT.

In 1982, Sony started selling CD players.

In 1987, the Whittier Narrows earthquake in Southern California totally messed up my desk and had the nerve to spill my coffee.

In 1992, the Cartoon Network debuted.

Have you ever had a CT Scan? Have you ever had an MRI? Did you find either one to be an ordeal?

Are you very organized? Is your system of organization organized or haphazard (but YOU know where everything is)?

It’s International Drum Month. Do you have a favorite drummer?

Chili – beans or no beans? What sort of garnishes do you like? Do you have a good recipe? Do you have a favorite restaurant chili?

yes, yes:  one was rather noisy.  only time it hurt was when the tech missed shooting the contrast stuff.  ouch! it burns 😉

no, i work hard to do that.

    me!

all beans!   sour cream. yes, with cocoa.

The weather widget says it’s colder than my thermometer does. It’s supposed to be around 79/80 this afternoon, and there is a fire weather warning for all those flammable areas, like mine. The wind is going to pick up this afternoon, too.

I have a dentist appointment and the path leading between the cottages to my apartment will be a construction zone all week as the main pipe is replaced going down to the street. The water will be turned off during most of the day. Fun!

I have had both CT Scans and MRIs. CT Scans are a breeze. MRIs don’t bug me that much, if I’m positioned comfortably. I’m not claustrophobic, fortunately. But those damn things are loud!

I am way more organized at work than I am at home. For some reason it does not appear to be a transferrable skill. Occasionally I will do a full organization, but it never takes for very long.

    Favorite drummer? Hmmm, Keith Moon?

I think chili con carne probably tastes best with no beans, but beans are what make it affordable to cook. I used to love the vegetarian chili made by Tony at the Book Depot in Mill Valley, but Tony is long gone from there, and the chili had departed with him. I later tasted the same chili at a restaurant in Lagunitas that I don’t recall the name of. It was really amazing chili, and I wish I had that recipe. I’ve never had spectacular success making my own.

  4. Gee

Civil servants are forbidden to do any work as of midnight last night, but we get to come in half a day and make sure everything’s shut down properly.

Had a laugh at a little meeting yesterday.  We are constantly besieged with rules on using telephones and government equipment.  Government business only!  No Daily F-Bomb!  (For example.)  So, the government people, some of whom have been issued government cell phones, are still allowed to use their phones as long as they don’t use them to perform any work!  So, happy Opposite Day!

Can’t remember exactly what a CT Scan involves, but I’ve had an MRI or two, for sure.  I’m not claustrophobic, but lying still for a half hour with all that thudding going on is a little taxing.

I alphabetized my books and CDs, but when they overflowed their shelves, that system pretty much collapsed.  I’ve got a couple of accordion folders for important papers and bills, but aside from that, I’m not too organized.

Favorite drummer, Mitch Mitchell.  I also enjoy Billy Cobham.  One truly great drummer who’s been out of commission in a psychiatric prison for many years is Jim Gordon.

I like beans.  I’m willing to try any new chili; everybody’s got a secret recipe.

Had an MRI recently. It was fairly easy until the last 20 minutes, then it seemed to have gone on too long and it became awful. I’ll never have another one.

I’m pretty organized. But recently it was easier to put my hands on my college id card from 1965 than my current library card, so maybe not so much.

Chili with beans. I used to make chili but now my stove burners burn everything so I don’t any more.

  6. Can I celebrate Techie Day instead?

Too difficult to pick the best shutdown Tweet but this one would get some votes:

DON’T YOU SEE? IF WE KEEP THE GOVERNMENT OPEN, WE’RE GOING TO GET SOLDIERS HOOKED ON THE SWEET NECTAR OF THEIR ‘PAYCHECKS’? #tcot

       – LOLGOP (@LOLGOP) September 30, 2013

Ordinary Americans might also get hooked on “staying alive” if they were to get health care. We are a nation of addicts.

One of these days I would like to see the Republicans in Congress live their religion and actually care for the least among us and things like that, instead of just displaying their righteousness on our currency:

In 1957, eager to show that the US was not filled with godless commies, the phrase “In God We Trust” was added to paper currency.

    Hovering …

    – Ha! The band in the Emilio Pettoruti painting. Must. Not. Pun.

    – Okay. This wins the Internets: “Some of the residents magma-nimously ventured back to help their lava-d ones get their ashes out of town.”

Thanks, Floja Roja. Distill is the best post in the progressive blogosphere.

Especially the one about Boehner & alcohol, and the one under it about getting Cory Booker to run NASA and stuff.  🙂

It’s been a long long day, good to come to the F-Bomb and take a break.  Thanks for doing this for us each day, Floja.

    Q&A

Have you ever had a CT Scan? Have you ever had an MRI? Did you find either one to be an ordeal?  Had an MRI on both knees around 11-12 yrs ago.  It wasn’t too bad.

Are you very organized? Is your system of organization organized or haphazard (but YOU know where everything is)?  No, not at all.

It’s International Drum Month. Do you have a favorite drummer?  Jeff Plate of Savatage / Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Chili – beans or no beans? What sort of garnishes do you like? Do you have a good recipe? Do you have a favorite restaurant chili?

Beans.  I add chopped scallions, maybe cheese, maybe sour cream; depends on what I have on hand.  I do have a good recipe.  Have never never had chili at a restaurant.

  8. Avilyn

This is pretty easy & I always get rave reviews on it:

    Ingredients:

    1 lb lean ground beef

    1 onion, diced

4 cans beans (I use one each Kidney, Red, Black, and Pinto, but whatever works for you)

    4 cans diced tomatoes

    2 cans corn

    Chili Seasoning

    Red Pepper (optional)

    __

Brown the ground beef in the bottom of the pot, along with the onion.  While they’re simmering, drain & rinse the cans of beans.  Once the beef is brown & the onion is cooked through, add the beans.  Open & drain the cans of tomatoes, add to pot.  Open and drain the cans of corn, add to pot.  Stir.  Add approximately 2 tablespoons of Chili Seasoning, mix in well.  Add red pepper flakes if desired.

Simmer on low until heated through.  Serve with your favorite toppings.  Enjoy!

    Notes:

I tend to add Trader Joe’s South African Smoke Seasoning in addition to the Chili powder and Red Pepper, and let it simmer pretty much all day – personally I think it’s better the longer you let it simmer, but it’s ready to eat as soon as it’s heated all the way through.

If you like your chili a little more soupy rather than ticker, just drain less of the liquid out of the tomatoes before you add them to the pot
