On This Day

In 1908, General Motors was founded.

In 1919, the veteran’s organization called the American Legion was incorporated.

In 1920, a timed bomb in a horse drawn wagon outside of the J.P. Morgan building on Wall Street exploded. 38 people were killed, and another 143 were injured. The J.P. Morgan building received extensive damage, but none of it was structural. Nobody ever claimed responsibility, though Italian anarchists were suspected. Wall Street was in such a hurry to get back to business that they cleaned up immediately and destroyed much of the evidence before it could be examined.

In 1941, the U.K. and the Soviets invaded Iran, suspecting that the Shah would be throwing his support behind Hitler. They forced the Shah to abdicate in favor of his son.

In 1959, Xerox introduced the first successful photocopier.

In 1991, Manuel Noriega’s trial on charges of drug trafficking, racketeering, and money laundering began in the U.S.

In 2007, Blackwater mercenaries in Baghdad opened fire on Iraqi civilians, killing 17. 14 of these were determined to be innocent bystanders. 5 of the mercenaries were charged with manslaughter, but charges were dismissed by a U.S. district judge over a technicality.

The weather widget says it’s 66, but the window fan in the bathroom says it’s 69. The widget says it’s supposed to reach 90 today. I believe that. I believe that sucks, I mean.

    Answers:

When my little friend Becky got her ’50 Chevy pickup, I became a Chevy loyalist. Before that I had no idea that people cared about that. Not that I really did, but YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO TAKE SIDES! Right? Then I worked for a division of GM a long time ago, and while the pay was great, I had never encountered such a blatant sexist operation before, AND when I was helping to open the mail one day I found a memo from Roger Smith to all managers ordering them to talk to their employees about how they needed to support Reagan’s economic plan. I threw it away. The loyalty, too.

The weirdest thing you ever photocopied was my hand, I think. I stuck it in a letter to my boyfriend and said something along the lines of, “I’m sure you will be able to detect my hand in there.”

I’m not sure there was one single most amazing restaurant meal, but I can think of a few dishes that stood out, like this incredible pasta with cheese at the short-lived Bono in West Hollywood (it was a special of the day), the most amazing Stroganoff I ever ate at Taylor’s Steakhouse, and this incredible angel hair pasta with garlic, shallots, and some kind of cream sauce from the restaurant (I forgot the name) at the Salish Lodge in Snoqualmie, WA. That last dish I got the recipe for when I wrote to Bon Appetit. It’s too fattening to make now.

I used to be a regular customer at my local library. I’ve been shamefully neglecting it lately thanks to that Kindle. I have been using the interlibrary loans since I discovered they had such a thing as a teen. I have to use it here, since our branch is a dinky one.

  2. Did you ever have a preference between GM and Ford?

    Nope. I don’t drive so I don’t care.

What’s the weirdest thing you ever photocopied?

Nothing very weird. I guess the weirdest was my hand

What was the most amazing meal you ever ate in a restaurant?

Long ago at a restaurant in Martha’s Vineyard. Clams. Lobster. Corn. All fresh from sea or field and into pot.

Do you visit your local library? Any other libraries? Do you avail yourself to library services beyond borrowing books?

Local library – not really.  Other libraries – indeed! University libraries and the NY Public Library (main reference branch and science branch). I have used interlibrary loan quite a bit, and search facilities for journal articles.

  3.    BREAKING: UNFOLDING EVENT UNEXPECTEDLY FAILS TO FOLLOW JOURNALISTS’ EXPECTATIONS, JOURNALISTS REPORT

       – Adam Weinstein (@AdamWeinstein) September 15, 2013

If “journalists” would actually do some reporting, instead of sitting around reading each others twitter streams maybe just maybe they wouldn’t be “surprised” at what actually happens.

The Summers reporting and reaction got on my last nerve and led me to shut down my twitter stream. From the left-of-the-left taking victory laps for “forcing Obama to back down” to those who saw those victory laps and assumed that anyone against Summers for Fed was a left-of-the-left, it was a Twitter-crapfest.

There are a lot of valid reasons for a roxxer like me to dislike Larry Summers and want him out of consideration. To assume that I am dissing the president is complete bullsh*t. I don’t want Larry Summers rewarded for his misogynistic viewpoints or for his contribution towards creating the very policies that led to the Great Recession.

Did you ever have a preference between GM and Ford?

No. I have a Honda, used to have a Chevvy Malibu.

What’s the weirdest thing you ever photocopied?

sorry, I got nothin for this one

What was the most amazing meal you ever ate in a restaurant?

A couple of years ago, my aunt & cousin visited Houston and took my mom, brother & me out to eat at a club. One of those members-only places. Waiters hovering at your elbow, the whole 9 yards. It was pretty impressive.

Do you visit your local library? Any other libraries? Do you avail yourself to library services beyond borrowing books?

Well, yeah. All the time. Mostly my neighborhood one, but if the book I want is downtown & it’s Sunday, I’ll go get it on the way home from church. Or if it’s at the library just north of mine, I’ll go get it there. But mostly, I look up a book, click on it to request it, them a few days later, it’s at my branch. it totally rocks. (And I’m always telling people with visual or physical impairments that they should be using their state’s Talking Book library)

Other services? Well, I have the number for the reference desk memorized. That doesn’t mean I call them way, way too much, does it?

GM and Ford:  oh, this was a big deal to the cowboys I went to vet school with.  I like toyotas.  Sorry.

Photocopied:  a line drawing self portrait the Kurt Vonnegut did of himself while giving a talk a friend of mine attended.  I still have it folded up in on of his books.

Meal:  a real lobster roll.  Yum.  So simple.

Library:  yes, and others around us.  Ours are a library system and we can borrow from any of them.  Pretty cool.  There are major differences between libraries and some are much more child friendly.  My local library has almost no fantasy or scifi stuff but the others around me more than compensate.  I have a nook and could check out books that way but I have found I really like holding a book.  I use my nook for, knitting patterns now.

It’s a bit Seattleish here in DC this morning.  Possibility of rain, but the weekend was beautiful.  The chilly fall weather and blue skies have arrived!

As a kid, I liked GM cars better, just based on their looks.  The original little T-Bird was an exception, though.  Lovely thing.

I can’t say I’ve ever photocopied anything weird.

I don’t know if I can choose a single meal.  I’ve had some mighty good French dinners.  And Vietnamese.  And Greek.  And Thai.  And Cajun.

I haven’t been to a library in a long time.  I’ve developed the very bad habit of buying books.  I used to go all the time, though, and I’ve borrowed LPs, and, I think, the occasional movie.

That clip is from an old Shindig show, I think.  I remember them having a show that was totally taped at a British concert instead of in the usual studio.  The Who were also on that show.

Nobody knew at that moment how famous Graham Bond’s rhythm section would become.

I saw a triple bill with the “Stop Making Sense” lineup of Talking Heads, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, and FR’s buddies, the Fleshtones.  Quite a show.

  9. That reminds me that I need to get an avocado. I tried to make guacamole for the first time a few weeks ago and had a huge FAIL. I was supposed to put in a tablespoon of lime juice and 1/4 cup of onions. I put in a 1/4 cup of lime juice and then when I looked back at the notes, I realized I had made a ghastly mistake. I dabbed up the lime juice but there was still too much and I cut it by dumping salsa into it.

I am keen on trying to make it again to put that kitchen mishap behind me.

Also on this day, in 2008:

… the Federal Reserve authorized a bailout loan of up to $85 million to the insurance company AIG.

They thanked the American people by suing us, f%$&ers.

    Hovering …

    – Water you know! There is a hover sub-theme!!

    – And baaaaad ewe cannot resist kidding around.

Have a great day, Floja Roja!

Did you ever have a preference between GM and Ford?

at one time, many years ago, i preferred GM.  Now, it doesn’t matter… gonna take a lot to talk me out of buying used Hondas.

What’s the weirdest thing you ever photocopied? 10 blank sheets of paper.  I was in a hurry to get some blank paper and couldn’t get the copier drawer open.

What was the most amazing meal you ever ate in a restaurant?

hard to say.  i’ve been fortunate to be able to enjoy some good ones. Locally, Sa’am at the Bazaar in the SLS Hotel offers an amazing dinner.

Do you visit your local library? Any other libraries? Do you avail yourself to library services beyond borrowing books?

yeah. yeah.  yeah… DVDs and the occasional research help.

    currently up on the bubbapod…
